Kevin Durant magnificent on and off the court

Because of his precocious play, sometimes folks forget that the 6-9 Oklahoma City Thunder small forward is all of 23 and still learning, so audacious are his perimeter abilities for a man his size. His future appears skyscraper high.

The NBA's three-time scoring champion is a portrait of humility and selflessness wrapped up in a 75-inch aircraft carrier-like wingspan that make him insanely gifted. He has become stronger and improved his court vision but he always has been a grateful young man who doesn't embrace a sense of entitlement because he can dominate the game of basketball.

"It's just a blessing to be here," Durant said Wednesday, one day after pouring in a game-best 36 points to out-duel LeBron James and the Miami Heat as the Thunder rallied for a 105-94 victory to open the NBA Finals. "Not just the Finals but being in the NBA, having this opportunity to do something I love to do."

Durant, who played nearly 46 minutes, scored 17 points at crunch time in the fourth quarter as the Thunder steadily pulled away from the Heat, even as James nearly was a non-factor by comparison. While James had his best scoring game of any Finals (30 points), he shot 2-for-6 in the final quarter.

Durant shot 6-for-10 in the fourth quarter, grabbed four rebounds, had an assist and no fouls or turnovers. His game total was the second-highest by a player making his Finals debut since the merger in 1976. Only Allen Iverson scored more (48 in 1996).

For the game, Durant shot 50% from beyond the arc and finished 8-for-9 from the free throw line.

He anticipates the Heat will turn up the temperature defensively Thursday in Game 2.

"I expect them to be a lot more physical, so I'll be ready for it," he said.

The Heat failed to collectively challenge Durant, particularly when he took over the game in the second half, allowing him easy baskets in the paint because of repeated breakdowns and pick-and-roll coverage assignments that did not work.

Some wondered why Durant only took a couple of shot attempts in the middle two quarters. His reply: "I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything, but I really don't care what people say outside the locker room, outside of this organization, what I need to do or what I didn't do."

"I really don't care," he reiterated. "I just tune it out and play my game."
