Journey down the Mekong
Part 1 The Dream and the Plan
Ø Teaching aims:
1. Reading for reading:
With the help of the teacher and the created language situation, students take part in some discovery activities to find out the following ways to read a passage and experience how these ways can help:
A. how to preview a lesson
B. how to get the main idea of a passage
C. how to tell the topic sentence from the supporting ones
D. how to guess the meaning of a new word
E. how to skim a passage
F. how to predict
2. Reading for language:
While carrying out tasks, students discover the following language items:
A. various verbs and verb phrases to describe the course of a river to avoid the repetition of a certain verb in a passage.
B. “stubborn” is an adj with a negative meaning and why.
C. How to emphasize a certain part using an emphatic sentence
3. Reading for writing:
While dealing with the structure of the 2nd paragraph with the help of the teacher, students discover:
A. the difference between an opinion and a fact.
B. How to support an opinion with several facts.
4. Reading for information:
Reading the passage, students get to know more about the Mekong River and how to plan for a trip
Ø Teaching Procedures:
Step 1 Preview:
1. Guess the main idea of the passage by looking at the title and the picture to learn how to predict the main idea of a passage.
2. 2: Read through the passage to get the main idea, and see whether you’ve got it right.
Step 2 Pre-reading:
1. Organize a free talk at the beginning of the class about travel to lead in the topic.
2. Answer the question “what’s the main idea of the passage?”
Step 3 While-reading:
1. Read to match the key words with the paragraphs.
A. Read some sentences taken from the passage to match the three key words in the main idea (dream, plan, river) with the three paragraphs.
B. Find out where these sentences always lie in a paragraph to learn what a topic sentence is and get to know reading the topic sentence can help to get the main idea quickly.
2. Read Para 3 to know about the Mekong River.
A. Read to answer “What can you see when you travel along the Mekong?” by ticking the pictures.
B. Discuss and report why you think Picture 1 shows a glacier, etc to learn how to guess the meaning of a new word.
C. Discover the verbs used to describe the route of a river to replace the word “flow” in a given passage.
3. Read Para 1-3 to cross out the thing that is not included in the plan for the journey to learn how to make a plan for a journey.
4. Discuss in groups of four to answer “Why does the writer say ‘Now she is planning our schedule for the trip’?” and find information to support the answer so as to have a better understanding of the passage.
5. Try to find and understand two language items. In this way, the barrier to comprehension is moved and the language items are acquired.
Q1: Can you find a sentence pattern in Para 1 to emphasize only “she” is planning the trip?
Q2: WK thinks that his sister can be really stubborn. Which is its Chinese meaning? (A. 坚决 B.固执) and why?
6. Answer the question “How WK makes us believe his sister is really stubborn?” to tell opinion from facts and how to support opinion with facts.
Step 4 Post-reading:
1. Group work:have a discussion and guess what will Part 2 tell us. And why?
2. Reflect upon what you have learnt by doing a reading assessment job.
Step 5 Homework:
1. Read Para 2 again and work in pairs to make a dialogue between WW & WK according to the passage.
2. Recall what you have learnt about how to be an independent reader and try to be a better learner.
