At 8:15, Mr. and Mrs. Rojas realized they already watched the movie last year and they didn’t want to watch it again. “Now what?” asked Mr. Rojas. “Let’s play cards!” answered Mrs. Rojas. At 8:30 Mr. and Mrs. Rojas started to play cards. They were playing for about 10 minutes when Mr. Rojas looked out the window. By December, the Institute of Neuroscience of the Chinese Academy of Sciences had created two clone macaques(猕猴) named”Zhong Zhong” and “Hua Hua” by nuclear transferring of somatic cells(体细胞)-any cell in the organism other than reproductive cells. Tetra, a monkey born in 1999, is the world's first cloned monkey, but it was done by using a simpler method called embryo splitting(胚胎分割); but it could only generate four cloned offspring at a time and cannot be genetically changed to suit the experimental need. Cloning a monkey using somatic cells has been a world-class challenge because it is a primate(灵长类) that shares its genetic makeup, and therefore all of its complexity, with humans. For drug and other lab tests, scientists have to purchase monkeys from all over the world, which is costly and bad for the environment, and produces inaccurate results because each monkey might have different genes. By cloning monkey using somatic cells, we can massively cultivate large numbers of genetically identical offspring in a short amount of time, and we can even change their genes to suit our needs. This can save time, cut down experiment costs, and produce more accurate results, leading to more effective medicine. Sun Qiang, director of the non-human primate research facility at the institute, said most of the drug trials are currently done on lab mice. However, drugs that work on mice might not work or even have severe side effects on humans because the two species are so different “Monkeys and humans are both primates, so they are much closely related and testing on monkeys is supposed to be as effective as testing on humans,”he said. This is especially useful in testing drugs for neural(神经的) diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, metabolic syndrome(代谢综合症) and immune system diseases, and tumors, he added. “This achievement will help China lead the world research in the international science projects related to neural mapping of primate brains, "he said. "However, bio labs from the United States, Japan, and European countries are also very capable, and they will quickly catch up with China after the monkey cloning technology is made public, "Sun added. “This means we have to innovate continuously and work extra hard this year to stay ahead," he said. 1、Which of the following is the most important factor in cloning macaques named "Zhong Zhong" and "Hua Hua"? A.Reproductive cells. B.Somatic cells C.Neural mapping. D.Genetic makeup 2、Why is cloning monkeys so difficult? A.Because it is bad for our environment. B.Because each monkey might have different genes. C.Because monkeys' genetic makeup is as complicated as humans. D.Because it is too expensive to work on their genetic makeup. 3、What is the main idea of Paragraph 8? A.The cure for neural diseases. B.The process of cloning monkeys. C.The significance of cloning monkeys. D.The close relations between monkeys and humans. 4、What can we infer from this passage? A.More effective medicine will be produced. B.Drug trials on lab mice will be abandoned. C.China is the first country to have cloned monkeys. D.China will stay ahead of the world in cloning. 23.(8分)ELECTRICITY IS AT THE CORE OF MODERN LIFE. DESPITE THIS, THE FULL STORY OF THIS REVOLUTIONARY FORCE HAS REMAINED UNTOLD—UNTIL NOW. Simply Electrifying offers the comprehensive story of one of mankind’s most important journeys: from a time when only a few could even imagine a world with electricity to today when, for most of us, a world without electricity would be unimaginable. Since the birth of the modern science of electricity 265 years ago, mankind has built an impressive structure to produce, deliver, and use electricity, thanks to a combination of pioneering science, innovative technology, wise business strategy, and pervasive (到处存在的)economic and environmental regulation. Simply Electrifying brings to life the stories of the people that made it all possible—from early pathfinders like Benjamin Franklin, Michael Faraday, James Clerk Maxwell, and Albert Einstein to innovators such as Samuel Morse, Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, and Nikola Tesla. In modern times, business strategists and economic and environmental regulation driven by many, including President Franklin D.Roosevelt, Rachel Carson, and even President Barack Obama, have shaped how we use and understand electricity in crucial ways. Today, Elon Musk and others are on the edge of again changing the way we think about and interact with it. Simply Electrifying is painstakingly researched and beautifully written, showing us how both profit-makers and policy-makers must use a wide-angle lens to truly understand the past and predict the future. 1、According to the passage, the book Simply Electrifying is written to tell us . A.pioneering science of electricity B.significant journeys of electricity C.the people who invented electricity D.the research which was about electricity 2、Why is President Barack Obama mentioned in the book Simply Electrifying? A.Because a policy-maker is usually a top dog that can arouse the readers’ interest. B.Because a policy-maker can help promote the better use of electricity. C.Because policy-makers can decide the future of the use of electricity on the market. D.Because policy-makers can take control of the economy through electricity. 24.(8分) Most of us have quite good memories, but our memories are limited. For example, we cannot remember everyone we have ever met or what we did on every single day of our lives. However, there are some people who do have prodigious memories. These people have a rare condition known as savant syndrome(学者症候群). Savants suffer from a developmental disorder, but they also exhibit great talents that contrast(显出差异)sharply with their physical and mental disabilities. Kim Peek (1951-2009) was a savant who lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. He was born with damage to parts of his brain, but it seemed that other parts of his brain, particularly those relating to memory, became over-developed. Peek’s unique abilities appeared at a very early age. When he was just 20 months old, he could already remember every book that was read to him. Peek could read two pages of a book at the same time-one page with the right eye and one with the left-in less than 10 seconds and remember everything he read. By the time he died, Peek had memorized more than 9,000 books. He could remember all the names and numbers in a variety of telephone books. He could remember thousands of facts about history, literature, geography and sports. Dr. David Treffert, an expert on savant syndrome, once described Peek as “a living Google” because of his astonishing ability to memorize and connect facts. However, at the same time, Peek was unable to carry out simple tasks, such as brushing his hair or getting dressed, and he needed others to help him. In 1989, the movie Rain Man won the Oscar for best Picture. The main character in the movie, played by Dustin Hoffman, was based on Kim Peek's life. He started to appear on television, where he would amaze audiences by correctly answering difficult questions on different topics. Peek-became world famous, and he and his father began touring widely to talk about overcoming disabilities. He inspired a great many people with his words. “Recognizing and respecting differences in others, and treating everyone in the way you want them to treat you, will make our world a better place for everyone. Everyone is different.” 1、The underlined word “prodigious” in Paragraph 1 probably means ______. A.happy B.clear. C.amazing D.short 2、According to the text, Peek ______. A.could take care of himself B.was born with a good memory C.was the student of Dr. David Treffert D.became brain-damaged at 20 months old 3、How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed? A.By giving facts. B.By following time order. C.By explaining causes. D.By making comparisons. 4、Peek’s words suggest that we should ______. A.respect different cultures B.listen to different opinions C.treat different people differently D.respect others’ differences 25.(10分) Moving smoothly and silently through Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s futuristic “FlyZoo”hotel, black disc-shaped robots about a metre in height deliver food and drop off fresh towels. The robots are part of a set of high-tech tools that Alibaba says strongly cuts the hotel’s cost of human labour and eliminates the need for guests to interact with other people. Formally opened to the public last month, the 290-room FlyZoo is an incubator for technology Alibaba wants to sell to the hotel industry in the future and an opportunity to showcase its prowess in artificial intelligence. It is also an experiment that tests consumer comfort levels with unmanned commerce in China. Inside the hotel,softly-lit white panelled walls bring to mind the interiors of Hollywood spaceships.Guests check in at podiums that scan their faces,as well as passports or other ID.Visitors with a Chinese national ID can scan their faces using their smartphones to check in ahead of time.
