55 million years ago,the Eocene Epochbegan. It lasted for roughly 21 million years. The Eocene Epoch isnoted for both the rise of mammals during it and the markedincrease in global temperatures, with the average temperaturerising between five and seven degrees Celsius.Researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography atthe University of California,San Diego attribute the globalwarming that occurred then to disruptions in ocean currents.According to these scientists, the currents in the ocean actuallystopped flowing.Normally, one result of flowing currents is thatwarm water is displaced by cooler water. These currents canstrongly affect the temperatures of the lands they pass near. However, when the ocean currents ceased flowing, warm waterremained in place, which caused surface temperatures innumerous regions to rise.Other experts attribute the Eocene warming to one or moremajor asteroid strikes on the planet.Around the time the EoceneEpoch began,an asteroid impacted North America and formedChesapeake Bay,which is located in the eastern United States. There were some other large strikes in Siberia in Russia aroundthat time as well. The impacts from these strikes could havecaused debris and ash to go high in the atmosphere and staythere for years. As a result,a greenhouse effect would haveoccurred and made Earths temperatures rise significantly. Finally, some believe that the release of massive amounts ofmethane into the atmosphere caused a global greenhouse effect. At the bottom of the oceans, there is a large amount of methanetrapped in ice.Any warming of the Earths oceans could havemade the ice melt. This would have released the methane intothe atmosphere. With so much methane in the air,Earthstemperatures would have continued rising until much of itdissipated. The Eocene Epoch is noted for both the rise ofmammals during it and the marked increase in globaltemperatures, with the average temperature rising between fiveand seven degrees Celsius. 1:Researchers attribute the global warming thatoccurred then to disruptions in ocean currents. 2:Other experts attribute the Eocene warming to one ormore major asteroid strikes on the planet. 3:Some believe that the release of massive amounts ofmethane into the atmosphere caused a global greenhouse effect. W Professor:55 million years ago,Earths atmospherebecame much warmer over a period of around one thousandyears.Thats rather quick in geological terms. This started theEocene Epoch, which endured high global temperatures forvirtually its entire twenty-one million years.Okay,so,uh,some scientists have claimed that oceancurrents slowed down or possibly even stopped flowing.andthat caused temperatures to rise. Its an interesting theory, but itdoesnt really have any factual basis. You see,um,scientists havedone a lot of computer modeling on ocean currents and howthey affect temperatures. And weve learned that while currentsand waves do carry heat, they dont transmit enough of it tohave an effect on a global scale. So it wasnt ocean currents that caused the rise intemperatures. Some have attributed the rising temperatures to an asteroidimpact. Its true that asteroid impacts can have global effects. An asteroid likely killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, andasteroid strikes have resulted in mass extinctions at other timesin Earths past.But.Remember that the Eocene warmingoccurred over a period of about a thousand years. An asteroidimpact would have affected global temperatures much faster. And,temperatures would have likely returned to normal fairlysoon after the atmosphere cleared up.So it wasnt an asteroideither. The thousand-year rise of the planets temperature alsoeliminates from contention the theory that the release ofmethane from the oceans caused global warming to occur.Again, yes, some amount of methane was released. But anywarming that occurred due to the release of methane wouldhave taken thousands of years to happen. No,something elsecaused this suddener, geologically speakingrise in theEarths temperature. It just wasnt methane that did it. 1:Weve learned that while currents and waves docarry heat, they dont transmit enough of it to have an effect on aglobal scale. 2:Remember that the Eocene warming occurred over aperiod of about a thousand years. An asteroid impact would haveaffected global temperatures much faster. And,temperatureswould have likely returned to normal fairly soon after theatmosphere cleared up. 3:But any warming that occurred due to the release ofmethane would have taken thousands of years to happen. No,something else caused this suddener, geologicallyspeakingrise in the Earths temperature. It just wasntmethane that did it. The lecturer argues that the theories on global warmingduring the Eocene Epoch cannot be supported with valid proof. This directly refutes the reading passages claim that thereare three possible factors which could have caused the risingtemperatures during that time.First,no factual evidence can confirm the change in oceancurrents.Extensive computer modeling on ocean currents andthe influence on temperature has been done, and it has beenfound that the heat carried by ocean currents and waves is nottransmitted strongly enough to affect the overall temperature ofthe Earth. This contradicts the claim from the reading passagethat the modification in ocean currents would have trappedwarm water in a specific place. On top of that, the lecturer contends that global warmingtook about a thousand years. However,if the temperature hadbeen affected by an asteroid impact as stated in the readingpassage, the alteration in temperature should have occurredfaster, and the temperature should have returned to its previousrange once the atmosphere had been purified. This rebuts thereading passages claim that after asteroid strikes, debris andash thrown into the atmosphere resulted in rising temperaturesduring the period. Finally, the lecturer asserts that it seems impossible thatmethane could have affected the temperature. If methane alonehad caused the climate to change,it would have taken muchlonger;rather, there must have been more components thatcaused global warming. This contradicts the idea presented inthe reading passage that methane trapped under the ice wasreleased into the atmosphere when the ice melted, causing thetemperature to increase. The lecturer
