Men sometimes say: ‘ We are better and cleverer than women. Women never invent things. We do.’ It is true that men have invented a lot of useful things: the machines, rockets, and guns, too. But scientists now agree that women invented one very important thing. It has changed history.
At the very beginning, men went out every day. Sometimes they killed animals, sometimes animals killed them. Life was difficult and dangerous. Women had to go out everyday, too. They collected roots, fruits and grasses. Then, one day, more than 10,000 years ago, a woman dropped some grass seeds. She dropped them near her home in the Middle East. They grew and the first wheat was born. The idea grew, too. Women planted roots and fruit trees. Then they could stay at home and look after their children and the animals. Women like baby animals. Scientists think that women kept the first domestic animals: dogs, cows, sheep and goats. That idea grew, too. Then their husbands did not have to go hunting for meat. They stayed at home. They built villages and cities. Civilization began. Men began civilization after women invented agriculture.

True or False Exercises
Directions: Listen to the following passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write ‘ T’ for true, ‘ F’ for false.
When you take a walk in any of the cities in the West, you often see a lot of people walking dogs. It is still true that a dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world, but the reasons why people keep a dog have changes. In the old days, people used to train dogs to protect themselves against attacks by other animals. And later they came to realize that a dog was not only hunting, the dogs would not eat what was caught without permission. But now people in the city need not protect themselves against attacks of animals. Why do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery. But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has not friends to play with. For young husband and wife, a dog is their child when they have no children. For old couples, a dog is also their child when their real children have grown up. So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship.

2. Listen to the passage and choose the best answer to the following questions you hear.
The arrangement of classroom space is important to interaction. Most of us have noticed the importance of the arrangement to efficiency and comfort in our work. College classroom space should be designed to encourage the activity of critical thinking.
Desks in any college classrooms are normally in straight rows, so students can clearly see the teacher instead of their classmates. Everything important obviously comes from the teacher. But actually, the teacher can correct this situation and create space that encourages interaction among students. The goal should be for everyone to be about to see everyone else.
Arrangement of the classroom should also make it easy to divide students into small groups for discussion or problem-solving exercises. Besides, the fixed seats are also helpful for a teacher to remember students’ names and faces. Small classes with movable desks and tables present no problem. Even in large lecture halls, it is possible for students to turn around and form groups of four to six. Breaking a class into small groups provides more opportunities for students to interact with each other and see other students’ thinking in developing new modes of critical thinking.
Question:
1. What is the primary purpose of desk arrangement? (A)
2. Why are desks in college classrooms normally placed in straight way? (C)
3. Which of the following does not result from classroom arrangement? (A)
4. How is the new arrangement beneficial for teacher? (B)
