Fan is back with a new way of thinking
ONLY around one in a million people get the opportunity to become a successful pop star. And that’s being fairly generous.
Fan Weiqi wanted to be a pop star so much she even gave up studying economics at Harvard University to pursue her dream.
“If I live to be 70 years old, I will go back to school to finish my degree at the age of 50,” Fan said. “But the chance to be a singer might be once in lifetime. I want to do things I truly love doing.”
She made a bold decision quitting college and pursuing her career as a singer and songwriter. Now seven years have passed and Fan has proved she is not just another pretty face in the Mando-pop scene. The Taiwanese singer’s new album Philosopher (《哲学家》) came out recently.
All the songs on the CD follow the theme of looking for peace in life. Fan said the track As Average as Us sings out her life philosophy. “There is nothing wrong admitting I am an average person. But being average means I can still achieve happiness in life,” she sings.
Fan’s mid-tempo ballads (节奏适中的民歌) set her apart from other pop singers. Is it related to her educational background?
“Getting a college education is really about learning to think. I learned to think critically or in a balanced way. It also gave me a good attitude towards learning and pushed me to set higher goals and reach out for them,” she said.
