Small talk is a good way to make friends. If you travel to other countries or have friends from abroad, do you know how to use small talk to make conversation?
In Britain, the best topic is weather. British weather is changing by saying “It’s a lovely day today, isn’t it?”
Besides weather, it’s good to talk about gardens with English people. You could say, “Those roses look really beautiful, don’t they?” English people love their pets. So it’s also nice to start with “ What a lovely dog! What is his name?”
In America, people like to talk about sport news, such as American football and basketball. Americans also talk about clothes. So you might say, “It’s a nice shirt! Where did you get it?” Weather is a safe topic there, too.
There are also a lot of topics to avoid during small talk.
Don’t ask people “How old are you?” Never ask: “How much money do you make?” It makes people uncomfortable. Don’t ask strangers whether they are married. Politics or religion(宗教) is not a good topic.
64. Which topic is safe in Britain and America?
A. dog B. age C. weather D. money
65. The underlined word avoid means ____.
A. 注意 B. 谈论 C. 提问 D. 避免
66. What can you infer(推断) from this passage?
A. British and American has the same religion.
B. Small talk is a good way to make friends only in Britain.
C. Foreigners talk about weather all the time.
