Dear John,
I'm sorry you didn't get the part you tried out for in that play. I know how much you wanted to be in the play. Now you feel that maybe acting isn't the right future for you. I think you're wrong. You're a good actor. Do you remember when you played Caesar in your summer theatre group's play? You were excellent . People clapped(鼓掌)every time you walked on stage(舞台). Even the other actors loved you.
All actors have to get used to being turned down for a job. It's part of an actor's life. Even famous actors don't get every part they want. I think you should give acting another chance. You love it so much, and you're good at it. Don't be discouraged because you lose one part in the play. Wait a bit, and try for another one. After all , you can always give up some other time.
Love,
Jane

When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."

Dear Mr. Plant,
I am an enthusiastic camper and longtime X-Ports customer, but after being offended (冒犯) for the third time at your Sierra Vista location, I am writing to complain about your impolite employees.
Several months ago, I bought a tent that leaked(漏) the first time I used it and wanted it replaced. When I took it back, your employees accused me of tearing it myself. I left not only with my torn tent, but no refund and no satisfaction.
A couple of weeks ago, I bought a sleeping bag that was supposed to sleep two people comfortably. It didn’t. Your employees refused to give me my money back even though I had the receipt. I was asked to leave the store, again with no satisfaction.
To my misfortune, my latest purchase of a piece of camping equipment at your store proved to be another disappointment. The propane (丙烷) camp stove I bought didn’t work properly. When I returned to exchange it, the rude clerk refused to help me because I didn't have my sales receipt. It was an even exchange! He said that I was a problem and even asked if I had seen what products I could purchase at one of your competitor’s stores at comparable prices. Was he accused me of something? Why would I have brought a receipt for an even exchange? Why would I know the price at other stores?
Furthermore, the clerk called security(保安) and had me escorted(护送)from your store—without my camp stove! How can I go camping now? The tent leaks, the sleeping bag is just wrong, and I don’t have a stove to keep warm! Who is going to refund my money for my stove? Who is going to help me get over the abuse I suffered in your store?
You, as the area manager, must clear these matters up for me immediately! I am sending copies of this letter to your main office and the Sierra Vista Store.
Sincerely,
Ima Kumpanee

Saying “thank you” is probably the first thing most of us learn to do in a foreign language. After all, we are brought up to be polite, and it is important to make a good impression on other people.
So, what exactly are you supposed to say when “thank you” is only the 20th most popular way to express gratitude? According to a recent survey, 19 other ways of expressing appreciation finished ahead of “thank you” in a poll (投票) of 3,000 people.
Researchers found almost half of those asked preferred the more informal “cheers,” while others liked to use such expressions as “ta”, “great” and “nice one”.
“Cheers”, despite its popularity, is considered an informal way to say thank you.
“Ta”, from the Danish word “tak”, was the second-most popular expression of thanks, and is also commonly used in informal situations, along with phrases such as “nice one” and “brilliant”.
Interestingly, one word that didn’t make it into the top 20 was “thanks”, thank you is shorter, more informal cousin.
“Thanks” can be useful, as it is able to bridge the divide between the formality of “thank you” and the downright relaxed “cheers”.
Certain words can double as an expression of thanks as well as delight. For example, words like “awesome”, “brilliant” and “your star” featured highly in the new poll and they can hint (暗示) at both your pleasure at someone’s action, as well as serving to express your thanks. If you are on the receiving end of a “new” thank you, you can respond with a simple “no problem”, or “sure”.
Of course, in certain circumstances, a simple wave, nod or smile may be appropriate (合适的). For instance, if a car driver slows down to let you cross the road, simply raising your hand in acknowledgement(承认) is enough to show that you appreciate the driver’s consideration. Sometimes, formality is necessary, and “thank you” is still the best choice in such situation.
32. According to the survey, we can learn that _________.[来源:学.科.网]

34. Which of the following is an appropriate response to “awesome” or “brilliant”?

35. What would be the best title for the text?
