Nearly all our food comes from the soil(土地). Some of us eat meat, of course, but animals live on plants. If there were no plants, we would have no animals and no meat. So the soil is very necessary for life. The top of the ground is usually covered with grass or other plants. There may be dead leaves and dead plants on the grass. The waste matter(粪)from animals also falls on it.
All soil needs food. If we do not give it any, the plants will be weak. Farmers found that animals’ waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers(化肥)are also very useful. The same crop(庄稼)should not be grown in the same place every year, it’s better to have a different crop. A change of crop and the use of a good fertilizer will keep the land good.
( )36. Which of the following is true?
A. All our food comes from the soil. B. Most of our food comes from soil.
C. None of our food comes from the soil. D. All our food comes from animals.
( )37. What would happen first without plants?
A. People would have more crops. B. Animals would die.
C. There would be more food. D. There would be less soil.
( )38. What does the writer tell us in the first paragraph(段落)?
A. Leaves, plants, grass and waste live on each other.
B. There would be no animals without meat.
C. There would be no plants without animals.
D. People, animals, plants and soil live on each other
( )39. Which is the best food for soil in the field?
A. Chemical fertilizers. B. Plants and grass.
C. Animals’ waste. D. Different crops.
( )40. Why do we often grow a different crop in the same place every year?
A. Because we can keep the soil rich this way. B. Because we don’t have enough land.
C. Because we want to have a different food. D. Because we do this as a habit(习惯).

Every afternoon, hundreds of thousands of young people go to Internet cafes (网吧) to play computer games. They play Counter Strikes, Diablo, and others. These games can be fun and exciting, but it is bad when this pastime becomes an addiction (瘾).
Computer games are often exciting and great, but students don’t learn as much from them as they would by simply reading a book. Spending too much time playing them can take away students’ study time. If young people spend too much time playing them, they will have little time to study. Besides, computer games can also be bad for young children, because many computer games are violent (暴力的) and the goals in most of them are to kill the other player(s). This does not send the right message to the children who need to be told that violence is not good. Young people may do the same in real life as they do in computer games.
Of course, playing a computer games in spare time is not a bad thing. Games can be a great way to rest after studying. However, they should not become the focus of our life.

“That is true. I must marry her to the rain.”
“But,” cried the fourth, “no matter how hard the rain falls, it cannot wash away the trees.”
“Then she must be the tree’s wife.”
“But,” shouted the fifth, “a strong wind can blow down the trees.”
“Very true. Then the wind must be her husband.”
“But,” remembered the sixth, “no matter how hard the wind blows, it cannot blow away the earth.”
“Then I must marry him to the earth.”
“But,” called out the seventh, “the earth is covered by the wooden floors of men’s houses.”
“Then she shall marry the wooden floor at once.”
“But,” the last said slowly, “no matter how strong the wooden floor is, a mouse can bite his way through it.”

Some people have very good memories, and can easily learn quite a long poem by heart. There are other people who can only remember things when they have said them again and again.
The famous English writer,Charles Dickens, said that he could walk down any streets in London and then tell you the name of every shop he had passed. Many of the great men of the world have had wonderful memories.
A good memory is of great help in learning a language.Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he learns when he is a small child. Some children like boys and girls don’t live in their own country, and they seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one.In school,it is not so easy learn a foreign language because students have so little time for it and they are busy with other lessons, too.
A man’s mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see but also of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo with a camera, there is much to do before the photo is finished and ready to show to our friends. In the same way, there is much work to be done before we can keep a picture for ever in our minds.
Memory is the diary we all carry about with us.
