Everyone needs help 16 some other person at one time or another. The phrase, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” holds true now more than 17 . The beautiful thing about networking(建立关系网) is that it works both ways; it is 18 give and take relationship. If you help somebody, they will have no trouble repaying the favor. Having a diverse network 22 (enlarge) your chances of knowing “connectors,” those people who can put you in touch with people who you would never have otherwise met. 4. Maintain. Your networking efforts will be 23 (use) unless you maintain the relationships. Maintaining relationships is easy: make a phone call, send a thank you note, send an interesting article, put someone’s link on your website, remember their birthday etc. 5. Give back. No one likes to constantly give, give, give, without receiving 24 in return. Networking is so effective due to the premise (前提), what can we do for each other. 6. Don’t worry if you lose touch. Losing touch 25 a contact is by no means the end of the relationship. Simply send an email, or call them, and say that you want to rekindle the relationship. Ⅱ. 阅读 (共两节, 满分60分) 第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2.5分,满分50分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A In the kitchen of my mother's houses there has always been a wooden stand with a small notepad and a hole for a pencil. I'm looking for paper on which to note down the name of a book I am recommending to my mother. Over forty years since my earliest memories of the kitchen pad and pencil, five houses later, the current paper and pencil look the same as they always did. Surely it can't be the same pencil. The pad is more modern, but the wooden stand is definitely the original one. "I'm just amazed you still have the same stand for holding the pad and pencil after all these years." I say to her, walking back into the living-room with a sheet of paper and the pencil. "You still use a pencil. Can't you afford a pen?" My mother replies a little sharply. "It works perfectly well; I've always kept the stand in the kitchen. I never knew when I might want to note down an idea, and I was always in the kitchen in these days. " Immediately I can picture her, hair wild, blue housecoat covered in flour, a wooden spoon in one hand, the pencil in the other, her mouth moving silently. My mother smiles and says, "One day I was cooking and watching baby Pauline, and I had a brilliant thought, but the stand was empty. One of the children must have taken the paper. So I just picked up the breadboard and wrote it all down on the back. It turned out to be a real breakthrough for solving the mathematical problem I was working on." This story, which happened before I was born, reminds me how extraordinary my mother was, and is also a gifted mathematician. I feel embarrassed that I complain about not having enough child-free time to work. Later, when my mother is in the bathroom, I go into her kitchen and turn over the breadboards. Sure enough, on the back of the smallest one, are some penciled marks I recognize as mathematics. Those symbols have traveled unaffected through fifty years, rooted in the soil of a cheap wooden breadboard, invisible exhibits at every meal. 26. Why has the author's mother always kept the notepad and pencil in the kitchen? A. To leave messages. B. To list her everyday tasks. C. To note down math problems. D. To write down a flash of inspiration. 27. What is the author's original opinion about the wooden stand? A. It has great value for the family. B. It needs to be replaced. C. It brings her back to her lonely childhood. D. It should be passed on to the next generation. 28. The author feels embarrassed for____________. A. blaming her mother wrongly B. giving her mother a lot of trouble C. not making good use of time as her mother did D. not making any breakthrough in her field 29. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The mother is successful in her career. B. The family members like traveling. C. The author had little time to play when young. D. The marks on the breadboard have disappeared. 30. In the author's mind, her mother is__________ A. strange in behavior B. keen on her research C. fond of collecting old things D. careless about her appearance B Parents should stop blaming themselves because there’s not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal. I’ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling (伸开四肢) himself on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. “I don’t know what to do with him these days,” she said. “He’s forgotten all the manners we taught him.” He hasn’t forgotten them. He’s just decided that he’s not going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor. Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, “I don’t like your dress; it’s ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home. “Where did we go wrong?” her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. At least, no more than the rest of that unfortunate race, parents. 31. This text is most probably written by ______. A. a specialist in teenager studies B. a headmaster of a middle school C. a parent with teenage children D. a doctor for mental health problems 32. The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to ______. A. the way that parents often blame themselves B. the change from good to bad that’s seen in a child C. the opinion that a child has of his parents D. the advice that parents want their children to follow 33. The boy on the sofa would most probably be described as ______. A. lazy B. quiet C. impolite D. unusual 34. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters ______. A. pay no attention to them B. are too busy to look after them C. have come to hate them D. feel helpless to do much about them 35. What is the author’s opinion about the sudden change in teenage children? A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it. B. Parents should pay still more attention to the change. C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers. D. Parents are at fault for the change in their children. C Jane Austen, a famous English writer, was born at Steventon, Hampshire, on December 16, 1775, and died on July 18,1817. She began writing early in life, although the prejudices of her times forced her to have her books published anonymously(匿名地). But Jane Austen is perhaps the best known and best loved of Bath's many famous local people and visitors. She paid two long visits here during the last five years of the eighteenth century and from 1801 to 1806, Bath was her home. Her deep knowledge of the city is fully seen in two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, which are largely set in Bath. The city is still very much as Jane Austen knew it, keeping in its streets and public buildings the well-ordered world that she described so well in her novels. Now the pleasure of learning Jane Austen's Bath can be enhanced (增强)by visiting the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street. Here, in a Georgian town house in the heart of the city, you can find out more about Bath in Jane Austen's time and the importance of Bath in her life and work. The Centre has been set up with the help and guidance of members of the Jane Austen Society. After your visit to the Centre, you can look round the attractive shop, which offers a huge collection of Jane Austen related books, cards and many specially designed gifts. Jane Austen quizzes are offered to keep the children busy. You can also have walking tours of Jane Austen's Bath, which is a great way to find out more about Jane Austen and discover the wonderful Georgian City of Bath. The tour lasts about one and a half hours. The experienced guides will take you to the places where Jane lived, walked and shopped. 36. Jane Austen paid two long visits to Bath ______. A. in her early twenties B. in her early teens C. in her late twenties D. in her late teens 37. What can we learn about Bath from the passage? A. Bath has greatly changed since Jane Austen's death. B. The city has changed as much as Jane Austen knew it. C. Bath remains almost the same as in Jane Austen's time. D. No changes have taken place in Bath since Jane Austen's time. 38. Which of the following statements is wrong? A. Jane Austen published her books without using her true name. B. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are mostly about stories that happened inBath. C. A. ask readers to buy Austen's books B. attract readers to visit the city of Bath C. tell readers about Jane Austen' s experience D. give a brief introduction to the Jane Austen Society 40. It takes you about one and a half hours ______. A. to get to the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street B. to buy Jane Austen related books, cards and gifts C. to take around the city of Bath on foot D. to find a guide to take you to the Centre D The flag, the most common symbol of a nation in the modern world, is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country. The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive artifact. It is, rather, the product of thousands of years’ development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction. Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another. Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems (图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves. These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first know
