Jane decided to have a late birthday party. She telephoned several friends. She asked some to bring records, some to bring food and others to bring something to drink. She rang another friend to see if she could borrow his record player. She herself bought some food and drink to get the party going. She took up all the carpets (地毯) so that they could dance. She did not know whether Barbara and Mary would have approved (赞成), but as long as she was careful, she was sure that they would not mind. She warned the two people in the flat above and invited them down. The first guests arrived soon after eight. The music was soon playing loudly and they started dancing. Some of Jane's friends brought other friends with them. As more and more people arrived, the noise increased. People started shouting at each other, so they turned the music up. This made it more difficult to hear each other above the music, so they shouted more loudly. At half past ten the bell rang. “Turn down the music!” someone shouted. “Someone probably called the police.” When Jane opened the door, there was a policeman standing there. She started to apologize, “I'm sorry about all the noise, officer. But you see, it was my birthday last week and I'm having a party.” “Never mind about that, miss. We're here because of something much more important.” “Oh,” said Jane, surprised. “What's all this about?” “Well, there's been a report of burglary (盗窃行为). ( B ) Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid, to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous. To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn, as soon as possible, these four basic strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and crawl. I feel that one of these -- the breaststroke -- is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training. In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow: 1. Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don't risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into trouble. 2. Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach, Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good. Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive. 3. Don't smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it. 4. Work at any activity that builds muscles. 45. Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____. A. they can talk B. they start walking C. they have no fear of the water D. they are five or six years old 46. The author believes that fear of water is_____. A. stupid B. sensible C. dangerous D. not smart 47. The stroke that some young swimmers use first is_____. A. butterfly B. backstroke C. breaststroke D. crawl 48. According to the passage, you should not swim alone because_____. A. the water is too cold B. your parents would not be happy C. something in the water might attack D. you might drown ( C ) It was not until one hundred and fifty years ago that scientists learned about the existence of dinosaurs (恐龙). Thanks to an English doctor and his wife, the door was opened to this zoological study. Reasoning that the reptiles’ (爬行动物) huge size must have made them terrible creatures, scientists combined two Greek words, “deinos”, meaning “terrible” , and “sauros” , meaning “lizards’ , to form the word “dinosaur”. After many years of study, they determined that these beasts roamed the earth for millions of years, and ceased to exist some sixty million years ago. Unbelievable as it may seem , not all dinosaurs were carnivorous, that is, meat eating. Many were herbivorous, or vegetarians. By reassembling the bones found at excavation (发掘) sites, scientists have been able to reconstruct the skeletons (骨架) and learn a great deal about the dinosaurs’ living conditions. They have learned that dinosaurs inhabited not only the land, but also the water and sky. 49. When do scientists believe that the last of the dinosaurs disappeared? A. 150 thousand years ago. B. 60 million years ago. C. 16 million years ago. D. 150. million years ago. 50. How have scientists been able to learn the living conditions of these animals? A. By digging at the excavation sites. B. By reconstructing skeletons. C. By observing them closely. D. By living with them. 51. Which of the following is NOT true of these animals? A. Scientists have studied them for centuries. B . They were meat eating as well as plant eating. C. They wandered the earth for millions of years. D. They lived on land, in the sea, and in the sky. 52. What does the underlined word “inhabited” mean?
