My Australian Writing Class
Today we had the second writing class lasting three periods of 1.5 hours, which was given by an aged lady Terrie. The first week when we came to Australia, we had Terrie's first writing class. I felt very bored. However after today's class, my opinion has changed. Terrie is a very serious and skillful teacher. Her class is less interesting but very useful and practical, from which I've learnt how to improve my writhing and my students' writing.
In the last writing class, we wrote an article with the title "My job as an English teacher in China". To our big surprise, Terrie has read all of our articles and pointed out our mistakes. At the beginning of today's class, she asked us to think about how to be a good writer and to do a quiz: Do you have what it takes to be a good writer? After the quiz, she discussed with us about how to be a good writer. What I appreciate most about today's writing class is her teaching methods, which I can use in my writing teaching. Her class not only focuses on writing, but also improves our listening, speaking and reading. She gave us two essays about two famous Americans. After reading, she asked us to compare their similarities and differences. Then she used simple English expressions to explain some difficult words. This procedure improves our reading comprehension.
I'm usually weak in writing, not only in Chinese but also in English, which I think is also my students' weakness. The reason for this, I thihk must be the lack of interest and methods. Terrie read an article named " Australia Day". Before reading, she gave us tasks---1. The teacher read; students just listen, not write; 2. The teacher read; students listen and write;3. Students read the article quickly and then write a new article about "Australia Day". At the end of today's class, she played a song " I still Call Australia Home" and she asked us to listen and fill in some missing words on the given paper.
Though I'm busy the whole class, I feel very interested and confident. Because I've learnt a lot and I can apply it to my English teaching, which is the purpose of my tour in Australia, isn't it?
