Happy holidays
Feb 15: Tonight I am writing my diary in a hotel room in Sanya. It’s really exciting. This is my first holiday without my family. Sally, Xiu Mei, Ling and I are really going to enjoy ourselves! We came here by air. I was nervous when I got on the plane as it was my first time – but then we took off and I could see the clouds and the land far below, and I forgot about my fear. We landed at Phoenix Airport and took a taxi to our hotel. It’s very comfortable. We are all in one big room. First we walked around the town. It is a busy place with motorbikes with sidecar rushing everywhere. We had a delicious fish dinner and none of us can stop talking!
Feb 16: Last night we did not get to sleep until midnight, so we were not awake very early. Xiu Mei and I went down to the swimming pool about nine o’clock, and Sally and Ling came down at ten. We came to Sanya for the seaside so we decided to have a day on the beach. We talked, read, swan, played ball and had fun in the sand. I had to use all of my bottle sun cream, as the sun shines very brightly here. After a rest, we went to a circus that was visiting town. It was all very colourful and exciting. This is a great holiday!
Feb 17: Today we went for a drive in the hotel minibus. We saw some beautiful scenery, and after looking round the park at Xincun, we took a ferry to Monkey Island. Luckily, we didn’t see many moneys (I’m afraid of them), but Sally did feed peanuts to a few. Then we took a cable car back to the minibus. Another lovely day!
Feb 18: We did a lot of shopping today. There are so many people I want to give little presents to. Ling went crazy and bought so much we had to help her carry it!
We also went to Tianya Corner. We cannot go home without a photo of us all at “the End of the Earth”, just like on the bank note. It is a very interesting place—Sally said she wanted to get married there one day. That made me laugh! Tomorrow we are going home. We have all had a great four-day holiday- I can’t wait to go on holiday again!

In some countries in Western Europe, such as France, Spain and Britain, the countryside is changing.
Life has become difficult for many villages, and some are disappearing. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, young people from villages usually want to live somewhere livelier and they often move to the towns and do not return. Secondly, people move to the cities to find work, as there are often very few jobs in the countryside. Sometimes villages remain because people from the cities have bought a “second home” in the village, where they come and stay at weekends. The price of homes goes up and people from the area cannot afford to buy a house there. Another problem is that it is becoming more and more difficult for farmers to make money from their farms. So they sell their land and find another job.
All these things mean that many villages in Western Europe are fighting to survive. We can only hope that they will remain. The countryside would be a sadder and uglier place without them.
61. There may be ______ reasons listed above for the problems of countryside in Europe.
A. two B. Three C. one D. four
62. Life has become difficult for many villages. Some villages are disappearing. Because ______.
A. Young people move to the countryside for a livelier life and for work.
B. Farmers can’t make money from their farms easily, so they sell their land and stop farming.
C. The soil is too poor in the countryside.
D. The natural disaster completely damaged the villages.
63. Sometimes villages remain. Because _______.
A. People are used to the life in the countryside.
B. People have bought a second home in the village, where they come and stay at weekends.
C. Because the government has supported the development of villages.
D. The price of homes goes down.
