New Zealand fishermen caught what may prove to be a worldrecordbreaking colossal squid (鱿鱼).
In the cold, dark waters of the Antarctic hides a creature with eight arms, two super long tentacles (触须) and eyes as big as dinner plates.Sound like something out of a science fiction movie?Think again.
On February 21,New Zealand fishermen landed a colossal squid at the length of a school bus. They had been fishing with long lines for Chilean sea bass in the waters off the coast of New Zealand when they caught the rare squid. With two hours of hard work, the crew skillfully pulled the creature into a net and dragged it aboard their ship.
Scientists evaluate that the animal weighs about a half ton and is about 40 feet long. That would make this colossal squid the biggest on record.
First identified in 1925 after two tentacles were found in a whale’s stomach, the colossal squid has long been a mystery. The animals are not easy to observe because they can go down to ocean depths of 6,500 feet. What scientists do know from studying the bodies of a half dozen colossal squids is that they are fierce hunters.
ts believe it to be the first adult male ever caught undamaged.Scientists hope to learn more about the colossal squid’s diet, behavior and reproductive (繁殖) patterns.
“Scientists will be very interested in this amazing creature,” said New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderson.“It adds immeasurably to our understanding of the marine environment.”

“The WHO encourages adults to take at least 30 minutes of moderate physical exercise a day, defined as any body movement that results in energy expenditure (消耗),” said Dr Danzon.“This includes walking, cycling, playing, housework, climbing stairs as well as sports.” He added that children should take at least 60 minutes of exercise every day.

run into撞上,偶然碰见;come from来自;lead to导致;begin with以……开始。
2.A throw away扔掉;坐失(良机等);put down写下,记下;平息;give in屈服,投降;break off折断。
3.A adapt
4.C make a difference
7.C act as担任,充当,由句意来看明显选act与as搭配。
8.D common sense
10.A lead可接同源宾语,构成lead...life。在as...as结构中,第一个as是副词,在修饰可数名词单数时,应用“as+形容词+a/an+名词”,故选A项。
11.A 从题意可知,空缺处应填入“结果”之意,答案锁定在A、B两项,而as a result of 后要跟名词、表示“由于……
13.A 本题考查两个短语in danger与out of danger的用法。in danger of losing one’s life有失去生命的危险;help sb.out of danger帮助某人脱离险境,两个短语中都不能使用定冠词the。
