Sixteen years ago,Eileen Doyle’s husband,an engineer, took his four children up for an early morning cup of tea, packed a small case and was never seen or heard of again.Eileen was astonished and in a state of despair. They had been a happy family and,as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage.
Every day of the year a small group of men and women quietly pack a few belongings and without so much as a note or a goodbye close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their confused families behind them.Last year, more than 1,200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home—the highest in 15 years. Many did return home within a year, but others rejected the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity.
To those left behind, this form of desertion is a terrible blow to their pride and selfconfidence.Even the finality of death might be preferable. At least it does not imply rejection or failure.Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a fresh life.
Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes most departures of this kind to be well planned rather than impulsive.“It’s typical of the kind of personality which seems able to ignore other people’s pain and difficulties.Running away, like killing yourself,is a highly aggressive act.By creating an absence the people left behind feel guilty, upset and empty.”
41.When her husband left home,Eileen Doyle________.
A.could not forgive him for taking the children
B.had been expecting it to happen for some time
C.could not understand why
D.blamed herself for what had happened
42.Most people who leave their families behind them________.
A.do so without warning B.do so because of their debts
C.come back immediately D.change their names
43.Some people would even prefer the death to the running away of their spouse because________.
A.their spouse would feel no pain during the death
B.their spouse death would not blow their pride and confidence
C.a desertion would not bring a feeling of rejection of failure
D.their spouse death would make them feel less painful
44.Which might be the title of the passage?
A.Broken marriage B.New life after desertion
C.A new social problem D.Desertion and its influence

For an American,or a foreigner here, any chance to have a social life is welcome. But what happened last night made me think I may be better off having no social life while I’m in Baghdad.
Friday evening,I was on my way with an American journalist friend to his welcome party. When we got to a checkpoint,we were told to get out of the car to be searched, which is normal procedure. We waited under a tent,as our car was examined on the other side of a wall.We couldn’t see what was happening but we figured we would hit the road soon.
But the search was taking longer than expected, probably because of a car bomb threat that had been reported earlier. Then we noticed the officers put their helmets (头盔) on.Never a good sign.
Our Iraqi driver then noticed that our other Iraqi driver and guards who were in a second car were standing facing a wall.We had gotten separated from them at the checkpoint. We told two American officers that they were with us.They whispered with each other and then walked away.
A few minutes later,an officer walked toward us and asked us to follow him.He said to me,“If you make any moves,I will take you down hard.”
That’s when I knew we were actually thought to be doing something terrible. We were told to sit in a row on the sidewalk, facing the street,I noticed across the street were our other driver and guards. They were also in a row,but in a kneeling position with their hands on their heads.
I was shocked. The only explanation could be that our guards had been at the shooting range in the morning,so the police dog may have picked something up from that.I also wondered why our Iraqi fellows on the other side of the street were being treated worse than us when it was our car that was under suspicion (怀疑).
After the end of the hourlong suffering,we were allowed to leave. No longer in the mood for the party,we all went home.
45.The author and his people were going to the party________.
A.in two cars
B.in one car
C.under the protection of police officers
D.for the purpose of exploding a car
46.The author became aware the situation was worse than expected when________.
A.they arrived at the checkpoint
B.the officers put their helmets on
C.an officer shouted at him
D.some people were asked to kneel down
47.Paragraph 6 and 7 are mainly written to________.
A.analyze the reason for the accident
B.describe the author’s terrible feelings
C.state the importance to obey the police
D.show how differently the officers treated them
48.The author indicated that in Iraq,________.
A.he would think twice before going to social activities
B.it was particularly dangerous for foreigners
C.foreigners were treating local people very cruelly
D.American officers could do whatever they wanted

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself.Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself.Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky.Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge,it is time you should build a positive selfimage and learn to love yourself.
Selfimage is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act,the way you talk and the way you think.Interestingly, our selfimages are often quite different from the images others hold about us.Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be.Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your selfimage and your whole world.
The best way to defeat a passive selfimage is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is,make a list if you need to,but write down all of the great things you do every day.Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.
It might be very well that you are experiencing a negative selfimage because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself.Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task.If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at maths, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.
The best way to get rid of a negative selfimage is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualifies.Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive selfimage. When you can pat (拍) yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way.Good luck!
49.You need to build a positive selfimage when you________.
A.dare to challenge yourself
B.feel it hard to change yourself
C.are unconfident about yourself
D.have a high opinion of yourself
50.How should you change your self-image according to the passage?
A.To keep a different image of others.
B.To make your life successful.
C.To understand your own world.
D.To change the way you think.
51.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to prepare for your success.
B.How to face challenges in your life.
C.How to build a positive selfimage.
D.How to develop your good qualities.
52.Who are the intended readers of the passage?
A.Parents. B.Adolescents.
C.Educators. D.People in general.

In 1988,Mary Andersen was at Miami Airport checking in for a flight to Norway to be with her husband when she was told she wouldn’t be able to check her luggage without paying a $100 surcharge (增收费).
Mary had no money as her new husband had left for Norway and she had no one else to call.
“I was completely desperate and tried to think which of my things I could manage without,”said Mary.
As tears ran down her face,a voice behind her said,“That’s okay.I’ll pay for her.”
Rather surprised,Mary turned around to see a tall man whom she had never seen before. He had a gentle and kind voice that was firm and decisive.
Although this happened twenty years ago,Mary still remembered the authority that radiated from the man.
Mary was pleased to bring her luggage to Norway and told the stranger she would give his money back. The man wrote his name and address on a piece of paper and gave it to Mary. She thanked him repeatedly. When she finally walked off towards the boarding gate,he waved goodbye to her.
That man turned out to be Barack Obama.
Mary paid the money back to Obama the day she joined her husband. At that time he had just finished his job as a poorly paid community worker in Chicago, and had started his law studies at Harvard Unive
