Twelve years ago. I Icamcd an important life lesson in the back of a taxi in the New York City.
I got into a taxi and we drove to Grand Central Station. While we were d 46 in the right lane(车道), a black car s 47 jumped out of a parking space just in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes(猛踩刹车), skidded(打滑) and missed the other car by several inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big a 48 , started saying bad words al us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.
I asked him. “W 49 did you just do that? This guy almost hit your car and could have sent us to h 50 !" He said. "Many people are like rubbish (卡车). They run around full of rubbish. They need a place to dump it. When someone w 51 to dump on you, just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You’ll be happier if you do like that".
I thought his words were very m 52 . I couldn't help asking myself. “How often do a 53 this kind of people to dump rubbish on me? And how often do I take their rubbish and spread it onto other people: at work, at home, on the streets?'' On that day I r 54 . “I’m not going lo do it any more.”
Since then. I have started to see people like rubbish trucks c 55 . And like my taxi driver. I just smile, wave, wish them well, and then I move on.

I have lived in France for nine years. but I cannot walk down the street without being recognized(认出) as an Englishman from 50 metres away, before I open my mouth. Why?
In Francc, the quickest way to recognize an Englishman is that he'll be the one with the belly(肚子) and the shirt hanging out. Englishmcn often wear shapeless black T-shirts, either too big or too small. However. Frenchmen are more formal in dressing. Their T-shirts have collars(领子). Shorts have buttons and zips rather than drawstrings(拉绳). Shoes look expensive.
Englishmen think of lunchtime as I pm. but for Frcnchmen it is 12 o'clock, one hour earlier. This may explain the sad looks if an Englishman arrives at a local restaurant at 1:30 pm. At that time most restaurants don't have waiters. All the cooking and serving may be done by the boss and his wife. When you arc shown to your table, just sit there and wait. Don't wave your hands to the waiters. Englishmen think guests should do something to make the waiters pay attention to them. But in France some bread and water will come first, then the waiters will take your order according to the rhythm(节奏) of the restaurant. Have enough patience(耐心)!

Mo Yan, a well-known Chinese writer, has got many new admirers after winning the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. Some people think several Mo’s short stories should be included in the textbooks for middle and high school students. Some people disagree. Here is an argument(争论): “Should MoYan’s works be included in students’ textbooks?”
Yes!
Mo’s short stories are good for students. Students’ textbooks should include the most reason not to choose some for the students’ textbooks.
Since Mo Yan won a Nobel Prize, many Chinese people have been proud of him. His works can affect young people positive(积极地) in literature. So his works should be used.
No!
Many of Mo’s works like Red Sorgham(红高粱) can be better understood by adults. Even though Mo Yan has won a Nobel Prize, his works may not be understood well by middle and high school students.
Any decision to change the content(内容) of textbooks should be made very carefully. It is premature(草率的) to announce the plan of including Mo’s works so quickly.

American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.
First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know.” Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
(3)Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.”
There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you a storybook?”
All these differences can be confusing(易混淆的) if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French. (4)但是他们的法语和法国的法语不一样。
