Lesson Draft For “The spirit of Explorers”
The content of my lessons is reading of the text “The spirit of Explorers”. My presentation is made up of five parts: the analysis of the teaching material, the teaching periods, the teaching methods, the studying methods, and my reflection. First, let me talk about the teaching material.
1 The Analysis of the Teaching Material:
1. Status and function
This unit is about exploration. The rules concluded in the earlier unit can be applied here to identify a leader. Ss should be encouraged to discuss what qualifications the explorers would have when they explored the sea. The knowledge about the sea and the explorers which the students have learned in their earlier time can easily arouse their learning interests. By studying of this unit, students will not only learn a lot of language points and the grammar et. We’ll enable Ss to know that how to solve problems in their life, and trying to promote the Ss’ awareness of exploring and interests for special information.
. As senior school students, they don't really want to learn English only by reciting. They prefer knowledge together with interest, thus developing their learning abilities. According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus, after studying the teaching material and analyzing the rule of children's growing of mind, I think the teaching aims are as follows:
1) Knowledge objectives
i)Get Ss to learn the useful words and expressions in this period.
ii)To learn about explorers, some facts and views about exploring the sea.
iii)To learn how the information is organized.
(2) Ability objectives
i) To develop the Ss’ abilities of reading by skimming and scanning the passage.
ii)To improve the Ss’ ability to communicate and cooperate.
iii)To train the Ss’ ability to deal with various situations by learning and using English.
(3) Moral objectives
i)To develop Ss’ sense of exploring and interests for specific information.
ii) To enable the Ss to love life and enjoy the pleasure of participation.
During the teaching, I think, these two aspects: how to make Ss successful language learners and how to let Ss pass "Observation---Imitation---Practice" to study English should be the key points and difficult points in teaching.
II. About the teaching periods:
As we all know, modern English teaching must follow the theory that Ss are the real master in which teacher is a director and Ss' ability of innovation should be fostered , too. According to this theory, I plan to have 6 steps to complete the teaching aims and tasks.

Step 1 Lead-in
Show some pictures of explorers home and abroad and introduce them to the class, ask: who are they? Lead the Ss think: which of the following people arrived in America first?
Step2 Reading
1. Skimming
Skim the passage and then answer the following questions:
What’s the passage mainly about?.......
2. Scanning
Ask Ss to read the passage carefully to fill in the blanks and match the main idea ,and
to locate the detailed information.
3.Post-reading
Discussion: ask Ss to discuss the following questions in small groups, and then report to the class.
Do you think it matters which Europeans first reached America ?

III. About teaching methods:
In my opinion, the main instructional aim of learning English in Senior School is to develop students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. According to the characteristics of senior school students and the theme of this unit, in this lesson, I’ll mainly use "Content-based Instruction Teaching", "Suggestive Teaching", "Situational Approach" and “Task-based” language teaching . They can not only establish a real scene and the interaction between the teacher and the Ss., but can also offer the Ss an opportunity to complete the tasks in which Ss use language to achieve a specific outcome. In the process of finishing the tasks, let the students be the real master in class and foster their ability in cooperation. I think, with the help of the computer and the courseware, the efficiency of the class will be greatly improved.
IV. About learning methods:
Our students are almost from the countryside. They are lack of geography knowledge and the cultural background of those foreign countries. But as Senior High school students, they have had a degree of recognition and a certain ability to read. They have their own points of view. And they also want to obtain more knowledge and information by way of our textbook. As is described in modern educational theory," the process of obtaining knowledge is more important than obtaining knowledge itself"., we should not only teach Ss knowledge, but also lead them to study autonomously and cooperate with each other. During the teaching, I should pay attention to cultivating Ss to experience, practice and explore by themselves, and activating Ss' interests, and make them willing to search for information, obtain information and deal with information. I'll try to arouse Ss' potential, make the Ss understand the knowledge in a certain degree through the mental process of seeing, hearing, saying, observing, thinking etc. And make preparations for completing the new study task. After feeling and understanding the language points, let the Ss get the knowledge actively by probe study and cooperative study.
Interest is the best teacher. For senior students, interest comes from the success they achieve. So I intend to let each student have the chance to achieve success and have the pleasure of being pleasure in learning English. Therefore, Ss--centered method and task-based teaching method are used here.
As teachers, to make our English classrooms shine with vitality, we are laid with heavy burden, and we still have long way to go. Deal with the language points, ask the students to pick out the useful expression from the text, give them more examples, and do some exercises to practice the language points.
