听力原文: Good parenting is more important than a good school to a child's academic success, according to a study on secondary schools in the United States. Youngsters do best when their parents help them with homework, emphasize the importance of education and attend school events. Children with supportive parents tend to perform better than pupils at good schools whose parents take little interest in their education.
Psychologists believe that limiting the amount of time children spend in front of a screen could have significant advantages for their health. The average 10-year-old has at least five screens available to them at home, and over the course of childhood youngsters spend more time watching TV than they do in school. This is where strict parenting can make a difference. Too much screen time has been linked to obesity problems and an increased risk of chronic diseases apart from other psychological difficulties.
Parents were considered to be passing on high levels of social capital if they regularly checked homework, talked about school with their children and attended other events, which are good ways parents pass on knowledge and values to their children. Family involvement is important than school involvement for academic success.
These findings highlight the crucial role parents play in children's education and suggest that efforts to reduce class size or create parent-school programs and ties would probably benefit students. Parents heavily involved in their children's education are often called "helicopter parents," because they hover around and push children to achieve high academic standards.

听力原文: Skype revolutionized the way people make calls internationally, but its biggest disadvantage is that it needs a web connection to work. Now a new application—the Ringo APP—challenges this by offering calls between countries using submarine cables. It is also inexpensive and easy to use when compared to traditional long distance calling and Internet Phone services. The company that develops the APP claims it is typically 25 percent cheaper than Skype. For example, users on Ringo need to pay only 1.7 cents per minute to call the U.S. while it costs 2.3 cents per minute on Skype.
So how does Ringo actually work? Well, when a call is made via the APP, Ringo connects it to a local phone network and assigns it a local number. It then switches the call to travel through submarine cables under the oceans. These cables are used by carriers, and transport high-speed data around the world. When the call reaches the destination country, it is reconnected to the local network again. Although it assigns the call different local numbers each time, the call appears as if it's coming directly from the caller. According to the Ringo company website, the reliability and call quality of Ringo APP is higher than on other services because it does not use a web connection. This means Ringo calls are not affected by fluctuations in Internet connectivity that often lead to audio delays, loss of quality and dropped calls.
Ringo is now available in 15 countries. They include Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the U.S. Users on Ringo in these countries can make calls to any destination worldwide, and to any number.

听力原文: OK, class, let's get started. Today's topic is insomnia, that's I-N-S-O-M-N-I-A, meaning difficulty in sleep. I'm going to illustrate how it happens and how we can conquer it. But before we talk about it, let's first take a look at the five stages of sleep.
Now the first stage of sleep starts soon after you climb into your bed, and close your eyes ready for sleep. The frequency of your brainwaves starts to decrease as your brain starts to calm itself. Your breathing will slow down, and your eyes will roll from side to side. This first stage of sleep lasts two to five minutes.
As you drift into the next stage of sleep, your brain blocks out any external and internal stimuli. Your muscles start to relax. This second stage lasts about twenty minutes and it is particularly vital to those learning a physical skill, such as mastering a musical instrument or a sporting skill, as it helps fix their new techniques in the brain.
As you continue to fall into stages three and four, your brain activity is at a minimum. You will be in deep sleep, almost completely cut off from the outside world. Deep sleep stages are vital to your mood because they are associated with the production of growth hormones that help repair damaged tissue. Without these stages you would wake up feeling tired and bad-tempered.
The last stage is R-E-M, Rapid Eye Movement. At this stage, instead of being relaxed, your heart starts to race, your breathing becomes shallow, and your eyes move rapidly from side to side. You are experiencing the dream phase of sleep. The length of each REM phase varies between 10 minutes to an hour. This stage plays a vital role in enhancing your memory.
Now, when you have completed your REM stage of sleep, you move back down through the stages, and this sequence repeats itself again and again throughout the night. The trouble starts when you can't start these cycles at all or you find them interrupted.
