Using language The story of Atlanta 教学设计
1. 设计思想:
这是一篇生动有趣的希腊神话故事,以妇女在古代不能参加奥运会为背景,讲述了一位Atlanta的公主以”跑得比她快”为条件结婚, 否则将处死求婚者。求婚者Hippomenes为了娶到公主,向爱神Goddess of love求助的故事。
因为这是运用语言项目,所以本课的重心应在“运用”, 让学生充分运用听、说、读、写等各项技能来练习、表达。听的部分主要是通过课文录音来体现;说的部分主要是通过小组讨论和角色扮演来体现;读的部分主要通过运用skimming、scanning、careful reading 等技能来回答问题、判断正误等体现;写的部分结合信息化教学的需要,以家庭作业的形式让学生查找中西方神话或民间传说中有关爱情的故事,并制作成手抄报展示,让学生逐步形成跨文化交际的意识。
2. 教材分析:
本课时既与本单元第一部分Reading关于古代希腊奥运会的话题有一定联系,同时又是希腊文化的体现—希腊神话故事的一部分。通过本课的学习,可以帮助学生更好地了解古代希腊的文化。它与本单元总体内容浑然一体,可以延伸学生的知识视野。
3. 教学目标:
语言知识目标
1、The important words: glory, bargain, hopeless, foolish, pain, one after another
2、The important sentence patterns ① Her father said that she must marry, so Atlanta made a bargain with him. ② She made as many men as she could share her pain. ③ He threw the golden apples one after another. ④ No one will be pardoned.
知识能力目标
1、Enable to talk about the story of Atlanta
2、Enable to develop the strategy of skimming、scanning、careful reading to deal with reading problems.
情感与价值观目标
Enable the students to be interested in western culture and develop the awareness of inter-cultural communication.
教学重点和难点

4. 学情分析:
学生应该对本课的话题非常感兴趣,此外课文内容叙事性强,学生阅读起来没有太大难度。设计的一系列活动例如导入、讨论、角色扮演等贴近学生,能较好促进他们参与的热情。

7. 教学过程:
Step1 Lead-in
The teacher: Good morning, everyone. We learnt something about the Ancient Olympics last week, and where did the Ancient Olympic Games begin?
Students: In Athens, Greece.
The teacher: Yes. In ancient Greece, people not only have the Olympic Games, but also have Greek mythology(神话), there are a lot of well-known persons and funny stories. Do you know any of them?
(展示希腊神话中十二主神 宙斯Zeus, 赫拉Hera, 阿波罗 Apollo, 雅典娜Athena, 阿弗洛狄忒Aphrodite等的图片,学生不知道的简单加以解释)
The teacher: If you don`t read Greek mythology, today let`s read one of them—the story of Atlanta.
设计意图:本篇阅读文章讲述了一个希腊神话故事,通过谈论希腊以及对古希腊神话中一些神的图片的展示和介绍,生动、形象、直观,从而激活学生已有的背景知识,使学生初步了解古希腊的文化背景和一些神话故事,有利于下一步阅读的顺利展开。
Step2 展示学习目标, 对学生的家庭作业导学案给出评论,评出表现最好的小组和个人并加分。
设计意图:让学生明确本课学习目标,带着任务去学习。点评作业,是为了激励学生和小组,形成良性竞争,激发学生学习热情。

设计意图:本任务通过给出关键字让学生掌握如何抓住故事的情节,能够使学生快速捕捉和获取文章主要信息,培养良好的阅读习惯,形成正确的阅读策略。
Step4 Scan the text(listen to the tape and finish the tasks)

The story is about a princess who races to marry the man that can run faster than her. In order to _win_the race, a man asks the_Goddess_ of Love for help.

设计意图:寻读前设置好任务,让学生带着问题去阅读、去思考,了解掌握故事的基本内容和框架,引导学生在阅读过程中获取有效信息并对这些有效信息进行处理,训练学生的阅读能力。
Step5 Careful reading
Retelling (1)
Something about Atlanta:
Atlanta, a very beautiful Greek _princess__, ran the fastest in Greece, but she was not _allowed__ to take part in the Olympic Games. She was angry and decided not to __marry___ anyone who could not run faster than her. She made a _bargain_with her father and made her _rules__that if a man wanted to _marry__ her, she would run against him. If he could not run as __fast_ as her, he would be killled_.
Retelling (2)
Something about Hippomenes:
Hippomenes decided to marry Atlanta after he saw her. And he went to ask the Greek Goddess of Love for _help__. She promised to help him and _gave__ him three golden apples. She told him to _throw__ an apple in front of Atlanta when she was _running__ fast. When she stopped to _pick__ it up, he would be able to run __past__ her and win. Hippomenes took the apples, went to the King and told him that he wanted to marry Atlanta.
设计意图:利用填空形式凸显核心词和短语,使学生从两人不同的角度出发,更深刻地理解两人的情感,态度等。
Step 6 Group discussion
Ask the students to work in groups and discuss the two questions.
Q1:Why did Atlanta make this rule?
Q2:Why did Hippomenes change his mind in such a short time?
设计意图:这两个问题既是对课文内容的深层理解,也可以作为开放性的问题,开拓学生的发散性思维,同时也能引起学生的兴趣。由于学生的思维存在着个性差异,对同一问题有着不同的看法,这一开放性问题的设置使学生有机会表达自己的看法和观点,为不同层次的学生提供了适应个性需求的表现机会;同时,这样的讨论还能充分激发学生的创造力和想象力。比如第一题学生的回答可能涉及婚姻观、男女平等、女权等,答案不是单一的。
Step 7 Role-play
Make up a short play about the text and then act it out. (Characters: Atlanta, Hippomenes, the king, Aphrodite, a story-teller)

People: the old king (K), the princess-Atlanta (A), the young man-Hippomenes(H),the Goddess of Love(L)
The scene 1
1) K: My dear daughter, you are so beautiful! Why don`t you marry? So many young men want to marry you, and they are so rich, smart and nice……
A: Oh, dear father. I will only marry a man who can run faster than me. If he cannot run as fast as me, he will be killed. No one will be pardoned.
K: But, my dear daughter. No one has won you. They all were killed. When will you get married?
A: I won`t marry unless I am allowed to run in the Olympic Games.
The scene 2
(Hippomenes is coming in.)
H: Oh, my dear king and princess! I will marry the princess. I will compete with you.
A: Do you know the rules?
H: Yes, princess!
K: Oh, young man! Go away! You can`t win her. You will be die!
H: No, I want to try!
K: Foolish! Go away! Don`t go to die!

设计意图:课前布置学生根据故事中的人物进行分角色表演。由于准备充分,学生对故事情节和所扮演的人物有充分的把握,同时运用道具如王冠、金苹果等,生动有趣,这既加深了学生对故事的理解,同时让学生成为课堂的主人,为学生语言表达和语言运用能力的提高提供了良好的途径,加强团队协作意识,充分调动了学生的积极性和学习兴趣。
Step8 Summary
英语学科班长给予总结,再次回扣学习目标,总结个人和小组表现。激励表现好的个人和小组,利用竞争形成更好的学习氛围。
Step9 Homework
西方的希腊神话和中国神话中有很多关于爱情的故事,请每个小组通过图书馆或网络查找信息,任选一个故事,制作成手抄报,在班级里展示。
设计意图:希望学生能充分利用信息化时代的便利,接触更多课外信息,扩展视野,增加跨文化交际的意识。此外通过小组合作,增加团队意识。
