Students often complain their teachers give them too much homework . Now, two reports show that in America this is not true.
The Brookings report shows that most students do less one hour homework . The Rand report shows that only 10% of high school students spend more than two hours a night on homework.
The Brookings report also talks about a study from 1995. American students do almost the least homework among twenty countries. Students in France, Italy and South Africa spend more than two hours on homework.
The Rand report says there was only one time when homework greatly increased in America. During the early 1960s, Americans were not happy when the Soviet Union(前苏联) became the first country to reach space. People thought it was necessary to improve education.

In different countries around the world, people give presents in different ways. The following is what people do in some countries.
★Wei Hongxing, China: You must never give a clock to a Chinese person, because the sound of the word for "clock" is like the word for "death" in Chinese. Also, don't wrap(包裹) a present in white paper because it is the color people use when someone dies. Don't give a knife, because it will cut a relationship.
★Eugen Karpenko, Russia: If we give flowers as a present, we have to give an odd number of them (for example, one, three, five…) because an even number of flowers (for example, two, four, six...) are for dead people. If we give a present of drink and the host(主人) opens it, we should empty it together.
★Rosie Kuhlmann, Germany: Flowers are a good present to take to your dinner hostess (女主人), but don't take her red roses, because it means you love her. Don't take an even number of anything, either. Don't take thirteen of anything because it's an unlucky number. Don't wrap your present in white, brown or black paper. 1. Chinese people never give______ as presents.

If you travel around the world, you will be surprised to find just how different the foreign customs can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man apparently shaking his head at another and assume that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India a shake of the head is a gesture that shows agree or acceptance. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to indicate "yes", a nod shows "no". The Arabs are known for their hospitality (好客). At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that any drinking vessel (器皿) is repeatedly refilled as soon as you drain(饮用)it. The way to show that you have had enough is to take the cup or glass in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.
In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting, talking to someone, even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause offence (触犯、反感). It is considered too informal attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand you are not supposed to touch the head of an adult, it's just not done. In Japan, it is quite usual for men to plan evening entertainment(消遣)for themselves and leave their wives at home. In Europe such attitudes are disappearing (消失).
Customs vary from country to country. Visitors may be at a loss as to what to do in a foreign environment. In such circumstances, the golden rule to follow is: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
1. What do you think of the customs?
A. Customs are nearly the same in the world.B. Most countries have the customs the same as China.
C. We have the same customs on the earth.D. Different countries have different customs.
2. In India, people think _____
A. a shake of the head shows "yes".B. to use left hand for passing food at table is polite.

A. taking the cup in your hand and giving a little shake from side to side.B. placing your hand over the cup.
C. taking the glass in your hand and giving a little shake from side to side.D. shaking your head.
4. To cross your legs when sitting, talking to someone is quite usual in _____.
A. Thailand B. ChinaC. England D. Japan

People at home keep asking me, "Is it hard to learn Chinese? Why have you learned it so well?" Well, there's one thing that makes Chinese easy to learn: there are so many people to talk to. You've probably heard that it's the most spoken language. Today it's also one of the most written languages online. And with so many Chinese people interested in learning English, it couldn't be easier to find a friend for language learning. You just have to know where to look for them.
The really good place to look for them is QQ. QQ has the same status(地位) in China as AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) does in the US. It is reported that at any moment, up to 9,000,000 people are using QQ. They're at work, or in a web café(网吧), or at home, and the information of the users can be found. If you sign on with your address set to "abroad", you'll soon find that many thousands of them are interested in speaking to you! This is a great way for you to learn Chinese, and for them to learn English. I think that it's a very interesting way of cultural contact(文化交流), too, for ordinary people from around the world to be able to have one-on-one contact.
1. In the first paragraph(段落), the writer tells us ___________.
