Bertie knew there was something in the wind. His mother had been sad in recent days, not sick，just strangely sad. Latest research shows that yawning helps in keeping the brain cool, which is quite different from the popular belief that yawning promotes sleep and is a sign of tiredness.
Yawning involves opening the mouth while taking a long, deep breath of air. It is commonly believed that people yawn as a result of being sleepy or tired because they need oxygen. However, researchers at the University of Albany in New York said their experiments on 44 students showed that drawing in air helps cool the brain and helps it work more effectively. They said that their experiments showed that raising or lowering oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood did not produce that reaction.
Study participants were shown videos of people laughing and yawning, and researchers counted how many times the volunteers responded to their own “contagious(传染性的) yawns,” reported the online edition of BBC News. The researchers found that those who breathed through the nose rather than the mouth were less likely to yawn when watching a video of other people yawning. This was because the blood vessels（脉管）in the nasal cavity sent cool blood to the brain.
The same effect was found among those who held a cool pack to their forehead, whereas those who held a warm or room-temperature pack yawned while watching the video.
“Since yawning occurs when brain temperature rises, sending cool blood to the brain serves to maintain the best levels of mental efficiency,” the authors wrote in the journal Evolutionary Psychology.

Doctors sometimes prescribe light therapy to treat a form of depression in people who get too little morning sun. But too much light at other times may actually cause such mood disorders. Long-lasting exposure to light at night brings depression, a new study finds, at least in animals.
The new data confirm observations from studies of people who work night shifts, says Richard Stevens of the University of Connecticut Health Center. Mood disorders join a growing list of problems, including cancer, obesity and diabetes——that can occur when light throws life out of balance by disturbing the biological clock and its timing of daily rhythms.
In the new study, Tracy Bedrosian and Randy Nelson of Ohio State University exposed mice to normal light and dark cycles for four weeks. For the next four weeks, half of the mice remained on this schedule, and the r
