A beautiful, expensively dressed lady complained to her psychiatrist (精神病医师) that she felt that her whole life was empty; it had no meaning.
So the psychiatrist called over the old lady who cleaned the office floors, and then said to the rich lady, “I’m going to ask Mary to tell you how she found happiness. All I want you to do is to listen.”
So the old lady put down her broom, sat on a chair and told her story, “Well, my husband died of malaria (疟疾) and three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody ... I had nothing left. I couldn’t sleep; I couldn’t eat; I never smiled at anyone; I even thought of taking my own life. Then one evening, a little kitten followed me home from work. Somehow I felt sorry for that kitten. It was cold outside, so I decided to let the kitten in. I got it some milk, and it licked the plate clean. Then it purred comfortably and rubbed against my legs, and for the first time in months, I smiled. Then I stopped to think; if helping a little kitten could make me smile, maybe doing something for people could make me happy. So the next day, I baked some biscuits and took them to a neighbor who was sick in bed. Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy. Today, I don’t know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I’ve found happiness, by giving it to others.”

Hundreds of thousands of Beijing commuters (经常往返者) use the subway every day. And soon there may be more. That’s because Beijing subway commuters are now enjoying the lowest subway fare, in China.
Effective Sunday, Beijing’s subway system has reduced its ticket price by around 30%. A one-way ticket now costs only two yuan, versus the previous three yuan. The two yuan is a flat rate for an entire journey, no matter how long the journey is or how many transfers a passenger makes.
Officials say the new pricing system is also the cheapest among all the Chinese subway systems. Passengers are giving the price cut the thumbs up.
One passenger said, “We love the new price. It only costs 2 yuan for the entire journey.” Everybody is happy with the new ticketing system. But some are worried that the new fare system will put additional pressure on passenger volume, which is already quite high.
Another passenger said, “It was kind of crowded at the beginning of the day. But after switching at the inter-exchange, the crowds eased off a bit.”
Another passenger said, “The new price has really reduced our transportation costs. But we believe there could be more pressure for the city’s transportation authority, since more and more people are expected to travel by subway.”
The Beijing subway department is assuring the public that the city will soon be adding more trains to handle the likely surge in subway commuters. The four-leaf clover (三叶草), possibly because it is relatively rare, has been a symbol of good luck for centuries. According to tradition, one leaf brings fame; one brings wealth; another insures good health; and the fourth, a faithful lover. But all clover, even the one with three leaves, has special significance. Most of it is good, although the even rarer five-leaf clover was regarded as a symbol of death by the Druids of ancient Britain. Those same mysterious priests believed that carrying a four-leaf clover allowed them to see otherwise invisible witches and demons (魔鬼).
According to an old story, when Adam and Eve were expelled (驱逐) from Paradise, Eve took along a souvenir in the form of a four-leaf clover. It remained with her as a reminder of her happy days in the Garden of Eden. For generations of people, finding one in their own garden brought the same kind of happiness.
An old tradition says that a four-leaf clover stands for the arms of the cross, a powerful symbol even in pre-Christian times. It is also significant that for many people, the four leaves describe the points of the compass. Some cultures have believed that a four-leaf clover can prevent madness.
It is possible to buy a four-leaf clover encased in plastic. But true believers say that, like all lucky charms, the best luck comes from one you have found by chance.
President Abraham Lincoln carried a four-leaf clover most of his life. Whether his success as a lawyer and then as a politician can be credited to his lucky charm isn’t known. But some say that one of the few times when he did not have the clover in his pocket was when he went to the theater on April 14, 1864, when he was murdered.
43. From the first paragraph, we can infer that _______.
A. the clover with three leaves has no special meaning
B. people wish to have a four-leaf clover
C. the four-leaf clover is much rarer than the five-leaf clover
D. priests could use the four-leaf clover to drive off witches and demons
44. Eve took along a four-leaf clover with her when she was expelled from Paradise because _______.
A. Adam gave it to her as a present
B. she believed the four-leaf clover could bring her good luck
C. it could remind her of her happy days in the Garden of Eden
D. she wanted to plant it in her own garden
