My parents divorced in the 1960s when I was a small child, and I stayed with my mother in Los Angeles. My father remarried and moved to a small suburb of Atlanta. For one month out of the year in the summer, I would fly back and spend time with my dad, so I had a father at times. Further, I had a series of stepfathers who ranged from wonderful guys to alcoholics to dangerous individuals. Having lived through such experiences, I find it amusing when people say that children really need a father in the home. Well, if he is a good father and a good man, then I agree completely. If he is not, then the child might actually be better off without him. We don’t just need fathers-we need good fathers. I feel it fair to say I ended up a very successful adult, at least that’s what people tell me. So how did I do it? I think it started with me having a bit of a chip on my shoulder. Normally this is not a good thing, but in my case it was rocket fuel for achievement. Not having a father in my life gave me something to prove, and it motivated me in an “I’ll show you” way. I also tried very hard, even as a little boy to be self-sufficient. And that means I did not rely upon my parents except to the extent necessary. This kind of independence I believe is highly missed in this age of highly managed children with “helicopter” parents hovering above them constantly. I also think I never wanted not having a father in my life to be an excuse for myself. We make and allow excuses constantly these days, but I just never felt that feeling sorry for myself was going to get me anywhere. I think if children can adopt such mindsets early in their lives it can be helpful. 24.According to the first two paragraphs, the author thinks . A. his father is a bad one B. nobody needs a father C. children need a good father D. children really need a father 25.How did the author end up a very successful adult? A. All of the above 26.Which of the following can take the place of the underlined word “self-sufficient” in the fourth paragraph? A. able to support myself B. able to dress myself very quickly C. able to play by myself D. able to work on my own 27.From the passage, you think the author is a person. A. friendly, brave and warm-hearted B. motivated, hardly-working and warm-hearted C. motivated, hardly-working and independent D. clever, determined and independent C It’s no secret chocolate is dangerous for dogs, but the risk is even higher during the holiday season, according to a new report. Researchers from institutions in England, recently conducted a study, published in the journal Vet Record, to determine how often the pets come in contact with the treat. To do so, they thoroughly searched the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network database, which includes patient documents from 500 clinics. They examined 2.7 million records of dogs from November 2012 and May 2017 and identified 386 cases of “chocolate ingestion” suffered by animals. After analyzing the results, they found that dogs are most exposed to chocolate during the Christmas season. In fact, chances are five times higher than holiday-free times of the year. “Dogs love a chocolate treat and at Christmas there are plenty about. Sadly dogs can’t eat chocolate safely, so many of them end up making an unplanned visit to the vet, which can disrupt the celebrations,” coauthor Peter-John Noble said in a statement. Why is that? Chocolate contains a toxic ingredient for dogs called theobromine, which is a caffeinelike stimulant. It can lead to an upset stomach, a racing heartbeat, dehydration, seizures or even death. But December isn’t the only troublesome month. Easter, which is in March or April, is a risk period, too, as the candy is more likely to be in the home. To combat the issue, researchers are cautioning people to keep festive chocolate away from their pups. In the case their pooch does consume it, owners should see the vet as soon as possible and be prepared to quantify how much chocolate was eaten. 28.According to the second paragraph, researchers finally found . A. many patient documents from 500 clinics B. 2.7 million records of dogs from November 2012 to May 2017 C. dogs are most exposed to chocolate during the Christmas season D. how often the pets come in contact with the treat 29.Why can’t dogs eat chocolate safely? A. Because chocolate can disrupt the celebrations B. Because chocolate can make dogs get sick or even die C. Because dogs love a chocolate treat too much D. Because many of dogs end up visiting a vet 30.Which month is not the troublesome month for raising dogs? A. April B. March C. December D. February 31.What is the main idea of this passage? A. Chocolate is dangerous for dogs B. Dogs suffer from eating too much chocolate during the holiday season C. What should we do to protect dogs from chocolate D. Why is chocolate dangerous for dogs D Earlier today, Spotify announced it would be sharing news at an April 24th event. It’s unclear whether the company is planning to show hardware later this month in New York City, but evidence suggests that Spotify has been working on an in-car controller—or even a standalone player—for the streaming service that would allow drivers to control music playback with their voice. Back in February, several Spotify customers reported that they received an offer inside the app for a new device that would come included as part of a $12.99-per-month subscription(订阅费). That price would cover both Spotify’s music service and the device itself if users agreed to a 12-month commitment totaling $155. Another user claimed that Spotify showed them a different $14.99 price point and advertised support for Amazon’s Alexa assistant. For some, Spotify detailed built-in 4G mobile data so that the device could function independently of a smartphone. In every case where it appeared, the prompt(提示) only came up once and never returned. Sightings of it basically disappeared after February. Still, the number of people who received this message tells me that the image was acceptable and was accidentally sent out far ahead of schedule by Spotify. There’s nothing to suggest it will launch at this month’s event, however. Outside of Reddit, the device has been mentioned on Spotify’s support forums(论坛) but drew little attention, with forum administrators dismissing it as a test. “We’re always testing things to improve Spotify,” is the usual response line. “Right now we don’t have any news on this, but we’ve let the right team know it’s something you’d like to see,” a moderator wrote in response to another thread on the subject. 32.What do you think Spotify is? A. A person B. A company C. A forum D. An app 33.What kind of new service does Spotify provide to its customs? A. information service B. forums service C. music service D. car service 34.What can be inferred from the passage? A. Customs really like Spotify’s service B. The price that Spotify showed is very cheap C. Spotify will launch its service soon at an April 24th event D. Spotify will allow drivers to control music play with their voice 35.According to the last paragraph, Spotify sent these offers to many customers to . A. test things to improve its device and apps B. sell more products to its customers C. get more attention on its support forums D. let the right team know the right price 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 More tips to make your essay shine 36 Although it may seem like a waste of time, it is almost always better to brainstorm a bit before beginning your essay. This should enable you to find the best supporting ideas-rather than simply the first ones that come to mind-and position them in your essay accordingly. Your best supporting idea-the one that most strongly makes your case and, simultaneously, about which you have the most knowledge-should go first, Your second best supporting idea should go in the second place, and so on. 37 Aim for Variety Sentences and vocabulary of varying complexity are one of the hallmarks of effective writing. 38 You don’t have to be a walking thesaurus(同义词词典) but a little variance can make the same idea sparkle. If you are asked about “money,” you could try “wealth” or “riches.” At the same time, avoid beginning sentences with the dull pattern of “subject + verb + direct object.” Although examples of this are harder to give, consider our writing throughout this article as one big example of sentence structure variety. Practice! Practice! Practice! 39 It’s not easy to write a top article. Although we have tried our best to explain everything that goes into effective essay writing in as clear and concise a way as possible, it is much easier in theory than it is in practice. As a result, we recommend that you practice writing sample essays on various topics. Even if they are not masterpieces at first, a bit of regular practice will soon change that. Develop the habit of practicing, 40 . A. Even the best-written essays can fail because of ineffectively placed arrangements B. Directly write it C. When you are writing, try to avoid using the same words and phrases over and over again D. In the end, though, remember that good writing does not easily appear by accident E. Plan on the whole F. and that will make you better prepared when it comes to the real thing G. Writing a good essay
