Unit 1 Asia Grammar I. Teaching aims and learning objectives By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. use “it” as a personal pronoun; 2. use “it” as an impersonal pronoun; 2. use “it” to replace the real subject or object. II. Teaching contents 1. New words and phrases: quarter, either, level, service, take up 2. New structures: It is very tiring to climb the steps. Many people find it pleasant to travel around. It is said that the air is not clean here, but I do not think the pollution is as serious as I imagined. III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty Tell the different uses of “it”. IV. Teaching procedures A Using it as a pronoun Step 1 Lead-in Brainstorming T: What will you think of when you see the word “it”? 【设计意图:通过头脑风暴活动,激发学生的兴趣,引出本课主题。】 Step 2 Presentation 1. Use it for animals and lifeless things T: Now, let’s play a guessing game. It is a tourist attraction. It lies in the northern part of China. It is a wall which was built to defend the enemy. What is it? S: It is the Great Wall. T: It is a kind of animal. It is very lovely. It wears big black glasses on its face. What is it? S: It is a panda. T: It is a type of transportation. It was invented by an Englishman. It has two wheels and is widely used in China. What is it? S: It is a bike. T: It is a common thing. It looks like a mushroom. It is used on rainy days. What is it? S: It is an umbrella. T: So, What does “it” refer to? S: We use it for animals and lifeless things. 【设计意图:利用学生喜欢的猜谜游戏,激发他们的学习兴趣,在不知不觉中过渡至语法学习,将it指代动物或者无生命的事物的用法自然呈现。】 2. Use it for a young child T: My aunt will have a baby soon. She hopes it will be a boy. What does “it” refer to? S: The baby. T: Look at the cute baby. It is a girl, right? S: We are not sure. T: So, we use it for a young child when we don’t know whether it is a girl or a boy. 3. Use it for an unknown a person T: The next American Presidential Election will take place in 2016. One of the candidates has caught the attention of the public. Let’s see some information about the candidate .Guess who it is. personal information: 67 years old graduated from Yale University the second time to take part in the Presidential Election once lived in the White House for several years S: It is Hillary Clinton. T: Here, “it” is used for an unknown person. Now, look at the picture, and fill in the blanks. —Who was calling you on the phone just now? —It was my cousin. 【设计意图:借助2016美国大选热门人物希拉里的个人信息,让学生在猜测游戏中学习it指代未知人物的用法,在语境、交流中呈现语法,降低学生的学习难度。】 4. Use it for an action, a situation or an idea T: We have learned something about Guilin in Reading. Do you remember what activity is popular in Guilin? S: Riding around the countryside. S: Taking a boat trip along the Lijiang River. S: … T: Riding around the countryside is popular now, isn’t it? Tourists like to take a boat trip along the Lijiang River. It is great fun. Here, we use it for an action, a situation or an idea mentioned in a previous statement Step 3 Practice Finish the exercise on page 12, and check the answers. B Using it as an impersonal pronoun Step 1 Lead-in Free talk T: I’ll show you around another beautiful city—Shanghai. First let’s listen to a short introduction from May, and then try to answer some questions. Hello, everyone. I am May from Beijing. I’ve been in Shanghai for three years. Shanghai is about 1,500 kilometres from my home town, Bejing. Now, spring is coming. The weather here is warm and sunny, sometimes a little windy. It’s a good season to visit Shanghai. Today is March 12th, Tree-planting Day. We’ll go to plant trees. Oh, it’s 8 O’clock. I must meet my friends. Welcome to Shanghai! Goodbye! Q: 1.What was the date that day? It was March 12th. 2. What’s the weather like in spring in Shanghai? It is warm and sunny, sometimes a little windy. 3. What’s the distance from Beijing to Shanghai? It is about 1,500 kilometres from Beijing to Shanghai. 4. What time was it then? It was 8 o’clock. T: Right. Here, we use it for the time, the date, the whether, the distance, etc. 【设计意图:本环节设置听取信息活动,将it做非人称代词的用法一一呈现,将语法教学与听的活动相结合,努力做到语法呈现自然、无痕,将枯燥无味的语法学习隐藏于交流活动中。】 C Using it to replace the real subject or object Step 1 Lead-in T: Shanghai is a wonderful place. Let’s enjoy some pictures of Shanghai. T: What do you think of the city? S: … Step 2 Presentation 1. T: Last year, I went to Shanghai for a holiday. Now, I’d like to tell you about my trip to Shanghai. 2. My trip to Shanghai Show some pictures, and make sentences. It was May 18. I left for Shanghai to have a two-day holiday. It was fine that day. The sky was blue and everything looked so beautiful. It took about two hours to go to Shanghai by coach. It was surprising that there were so many people in Shanghai in the subway station. It was easy to get lost in such a big city. It was helpful of the policeman to show me the way to the hotel. I thought it comfortable to live in such a hotel. It’s said that the Bund looks especially charming at night. I went there to enjoy the view with my friends. It was so beautiful that I couldn’t stop taking photos. It was such a wonderful city that I wanted to visit it again. 3. Group work What does “it” refer to in the following sentences? It was surprising that there were so many people in Shanghai in the subway station. It was easy to get lost in such a big city. I thought it comfortable to live in such a hotel. T: We use it to replace the real subject or object in a sentence. 【设计意图:通过讲述一段旅行经历,将it的各种用法贯穿其中,给出相关图片让学生先进行描述,再进行点拨,进而让it闪亮登场,尤其突出其做形式主语和形式宾语的用法。通过学生小组讨论,理清形式主语和形式宾语的真正含义,使学生自主学习的能力进一步提高。】 Step 3 Practice 1. Finish exercises on pages 13 and 14 2. Game time T: Now, let’s play a relay game. Here are the rules: You are divided into four groups. Each of you makes a sentence with it. The first student in Group 1 reads his/her sentence loudly, and then asks the first one in Group 2 to tell what it refers to in the sentence. Then it’s Group 2’s turn … If you can’t tell the use of it correctly, your group will lose the game. 【设计意图:让语言学习生活化、游戏化一直是实现有效英语课堂的途径。本环节设置接力游戏,让每一个学生都有参与、表现及发现自身问题的机会。游戏紧扣it,学生自行造句,分析用法,真正成为课堂的主体。】 Step 4 Production T: The word it is simple but very useful. Just now, I told you about my trip to Shanghai. Would you like to share one of your trips with us? Try to use it as much as possible. 【设计意图:语言学习的最终目的为语用。本板块设计以分享旅行经历为任务,紧扣本单元话题,又将语法项目融入其中,真正做到学以致用。】 V. Homework Write a short passage about a trip.  记住,永远不要对父母说这十句话!   1.好了,好了,知道,真啰嗦!(可怜天下父母心,父母的“啰嗦”其实是一种幸福。)   2.有事吗,没事?那挂了啊。(父母打电话,也许只想说说话,我们能否明白他们的用意,不要匆忙挂了电话!)   3.说了你也不懂,别问了!(他们只是想和我们说说话。)   4.跟你说了多少次不要你做,做又做不好。(一些他们已经力不能及的事,我们因为关心而制止,但不要这样让他们觉得自己很无用。)   5.你们那一套,早就过时了。(父母的建议,也许不能起到作用,可我们是否能换一种回应的方式?)   6.叫你别收拾我的房间,你看,东西找都找不到!(自己的房间还是自己收拾好,不收拾,也不要拂了老人的好意。)   7.我要吃什么我知道,别夹了!(盼着我们回家的父母总想把所有关心融在特意做的菜里,我们默默领情就好。)   8.说了别吃这些剩菜了,怎么老不听啊!(他们一辈子的节约习惯,很难改,让他们每次尽量少做点菜就好。)   9.我自己有分寸,不要老说了,烦不烦。(他们只是担心你吃亏。)   10.这些东西说了不要了,堆在这里做什么啊!(人老了都会念旧……)   当你还在襁褓时,她便天天抱着你,哄你入睡;当你到少年时代,她便天天念叨着你,夜夜帮你捻着棉被;当你终于离开家,远行他方,她便天天牵挂着你。   有时候,我们总是在抱怨母亲的唠叨、念叨,总是在心烦她那些说了无数遍的关心话语。都说儿女是父母前辈子欠下的债,这句话不假。让我们感恩于心,让我们感恩父母那些点滴的关怀。   如果有一天,你发现母亲煮的菜太咸太难吃,如果有一天,你发现父母经常忘记关电器;   如果有一天,你发现父亲的花草树木已渐荒废,如果有一天,你发现家中的地板衣柜经常沾满灰尘;   如果有一天,你发现父母不再爱吃青脆的蔬果,如果有一天,你发现父母爱吃煮得烂烂的菜;   如果有一天,你发现吃饭时间他们老是咳个不停,千万别误以为他们感冒或着凉(那是吞咽神经老化的现象);   如果有一天,你发觉他们不再爱出门……也许是因为身体一天不如一天……   每个人都会老,父母会比我们先老。当父母不能照顾自己的时候,很多事情做得不好的时候,请不要嫌弃他们,并请维持他们的“自尊心”.   当他们不爱洗澡时,请抽空定期帮他们洗身体,因为纵使他们自己洗也不可能洗干净;   当我们享受美食的时候,请替他们准备大小适当、容易咀嚼的一小碗。他们不爱吃,可能是因为牙齿咬不动了。   曾经听到过这样一个说法:其实,每位母亲都是一位漂亮的仙女,她们有一件非常美丽的衣裳。可是当她决定做某个孩子母亲的时候,当她准备呵护某个生命的时候,就会褪去这件美丽的衣裳,变成一名普通的女子,一辈子,平淡无奇。
