Some scholars have made empirical researches of marriage and family based on Chinese traditional cultures. Chen finds out that in a traditional Chinese marriage, the wedding ceremony worshipping ‘’tiandi’’ (heaven and earth) and ancestor is considered as the most important thing, and there is no need to take sex, love and law, the three most important factors in western marriage, into consideration.
In addition, some studies also make contributions to comparison of Chinese and American marital values. Through comparing the cultural diversity of Chinese and American marriage values, Sun argues that Chinese and American vary greatly in the purpose of marriage, mate selection criteria as well as marital relationship. Liang demonstrates that some main aspects in value system have great influence on Chinese and western’s views of love and marriage.

The objective of the study is to find the differences between China and America concerning the problem of marriage and causes resulted in through analyzing the view of marriage of Ang Lee’s film The Wedding Banquet from the perspective of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory, so as to help people to better understand the marriage culture between China and America and decrease the barriers of intercultural communication. What’s more, with the development of economy and the increasingly frequent exchanges between China and America, the transnational marriage is becoming increasingly popular. This study may also contribute to better preparations of adults who plan to experience international marriage.
