I also love my laptop computer,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts.Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these device(设备) and truly communicate with others. On occasion,I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas.Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom,I have a rule—no laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy. Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am antitechnology. There's no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students. The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between course material and the class discussion. I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create.Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom. I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change,I'm sticking to my plan. A few hours of technologyfree dialogue is just too sweet to give up. 9.Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with ________. A. the course material B. others' misuse of technology C. discussion topics D. the author's class regulations 答案:D。 由其次段的“When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy .” 10.The underlined word “engage ”in para.4 probably means ________. A. explore B. accept C. change D. reject 答案: A。 依据第四段的“I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas.” 11.According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may ________. A. keep students from doing independent thinking B. encourage students to have indepth conversations C. help students to better understand complex themes D. affect students' concentration on course evaluation 答案: A。 由第四段的“Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas .” 12.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author ________. A. is quite stubborn B. will give up teaching history C. will change his teaching plan soon D. values technologyfree dialogues in his class 答案: D。 Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (装饰) the walls of homes and are used in stores for sales of different goods. The news is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record the beauties of nature. They can also bring things close that are far away. Through photos, people can see wild animals, cities in foreign lands, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories. Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism. At times photojournalists tell their stories through a single picture. At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture is like a chapter in a book, which can do more than record the facts. It can also be a strong force for social change. Jacob Riis was among the first photojournalists. He took pictures of parts of New York City where the poor lived. Riis believed that poverty(贫困)caused crime, and he used photos to help him prove his point. A few years later, the photos of small children working in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine’s pictures helped bring about laws to protect such children. Hundreds of pictures may have to be taken in order to get one or two really good photos. It takes science to have the photo come out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good design and expresses feeling. Photojournalists make an actual record of what they see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an actual record. It can record an important event as a beautiful or exciting picture. As historical and artistic documents(文献) ,photos can become more important over time. Today photojournalists still have their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish(发表) them in books and on the Internet. 1. The underlined word “They” in the first paragraph refers to . A. beauties B. photos C. goods D. events 2. The photos of the small children by Hine show us that photos . A. are also works of art B. are popular ways of reporting news C. often shock the public D. can serve as a force for social change 3. What can we learn from the passage? A. News with pictures is encouraging. B. Photos help people improve their life. C. News photos mean history in a sense. D. People prefer reading news with pictures. 4. The text is mainly about . A. telling the story through pictures B. decorating the walls of homes C. publishing historical papers D. expressing feeling through pictures 【参考答案】1—4、B D C A
