A Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. So, I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money to pay the high schooling for me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or see on TV, and sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even impossible. One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I asked her if there was love between them. She paused her work and raised her head with surprise. Then she bowed her head and continued sewing the quilt. I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. After a few minutes she said,“Look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of the time it disappears in the quilt. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there and makes the quilt long-lasting.” I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. My mother suddenly got sick seriously and had to stay in the hospital for a one-month treatment. Every morning and dusk after she returned from the hospital, my father helped my mother walk slowly on the country road. There were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees, and the sun gently glistened on them through the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world. Reading their eyes, I know they love each other deeply. From this experience, I realized that love was just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm. 21. The writer thought his parents’ life was not _______ at first. A. true B. great C. meaningful D. romantic 22. Valentine’s Day is a day for ________. A. parents B. friends C. relatives D. lovers 23. What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph suggest? A. There is beautiful scenery everywhere in the world. B. There is true life anywhere in the world. C. There is no love without beautiful flowers. D. There is true love between the writer’s parents. 24. Which is the best title of this passage? A. Love doesn’t exist every day. B. Love means flowers. C. Love can never be seen. D. Love is the thread of a quilt. B Three people have been arrested for trying to sell Coca Cola’s secrets to Pepsi, according to the US Department of Justice. Two men of Georgia and one man of New York have joined in the trick to sell the Coca Cola’s secrets to it’s opponent Pepsi for $1.5 million. In May, Pepsi told Coca Cola that it had received a letter from a person calling himself “Dirk” offering very detailed and secret information about Coca Cola’s products for a fee, according to the DOJ press release. The FBI got the secret men to look into the case. Ibrahim Dimson of New York and Edmund Duhaney and Joya Williams of Georgia were arrested in Atlanta on Wednesday without incident, and charged with unlawfully stealing and selling trade secrets. Williams was a Coca Cola employee. “Sadly, today’s arrests include a person within our company,” said Coca Cola CEO Neville Isdell in an email to employees. “While this failure of trust is difficult for all of us to accept, it stresses the responsibility we each have to watch out in protecting our trade secrets. Information is the lifeblood (生命线) of the company,” Isdell continued. “As the health of our enterprise (事业) continues to strengthen, our ideas and our competitive data carry increasing interest to those outside our business.” A Pepsi spokesman said that the company was pleased to be of help in the investigation (调查). “We did what any responsible company would do,” said the spokesman. “Competition can be fierce, but it must also be fair and legal.” 25. The name “Dirk” used by the man who sent Pepsi a letter is _______. A. true B. false C. a pen name D. famous 26. What does the underlined part “a person” refer to? A. Ibrahim Dimson. B. Edmund Duhaney. C. Joya Williams. D. Neville Isdell. 27. What is the lesson of three men’s trying to sell Coca Cola’s secrets? A. The Coca Cola company should strengthen the responsibility to protect trade secrets. B. The Coca Cola company shouldn’t employ any new employees. C. The Coca Cola company should fire some employees. D. The Coca Cola company should give the employees a rise. 28. According to the passage, we can see the relationship between Pepsi and Coca Cola is _______. A. terrible B. not so good C. friendly D. uncertain C People used to say “The hand that rocks the cradle (摇篮) rules the world” and “Behind every successful man there’s a woman.” Both of these sayings mean the same thing. Men rule the world, but their wives rule them. Most of the American women like making their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work, they want to be better paid. They want to be as successful as men. The American women’s liberation movement was started by women who don’t want to stand behind successful men. They want to stand beside men with the same chance for success. They don’t want to be told that certain jobs or offices are closed to them. They refuse to work side by side with men who do the same work for a higher pay. A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and believe in herself. If somebody says to her, “You’ve come a long way, baby.”, she’ll smile and answer, “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go, baby!” The women’s liberation movement is quite new, and many American women do not agree. But it has already made some important changes in women’s life and in men’s life, too. 29. The underlined sentence “Behind every successful man there’s a woman.” here means that _______. A. the world is now ruled over by women B. women play an important role in men’s life and work C. a man can’t succeed without a woman in his office D. a woman used to rule her husband 30. Some American women wish to _________. A. have the same chance for success as men B. get better jobs than the men working together C. earn more money than their husbands D. devote more to their work than to their families 31. A liberated woman must _________. A. take pride in her husband’s success B. be fond of and devote herself to her children C. be proud of being a woman and trust herself D. stand before or beside her husband 32. What is the main idea of the passage? A. American women’s liberation movement. B. A woman behind a successful man. C. Women want to support their husbands. D. Women don’t want to support their husbands. D For many creatures, the danger of global warming is more than too much heat. You can get temperature-related effects that may not be what you expect. Slight environmental change can affect physiological needs and weaken the ability of animals to keep a large enough population for them to live on even when the temperature rise is too mild to kill any creatures. Biologists usually don’t know enough about an animal to assess (评估) the risk. Their knowledge comes largely from laboratory research on bits and pieces of a creature’s physiology. This method doesn’t tell how an animal as a living whole responds to climate change where it lives. Now, 10 years of research that joined laboratory study with field work has explained the decrease in the population of eelpouts, a kind of fish in the southern part of the North Sea. Drs Portner and Knust have shown that a mild rise in water temperature can reduce the water’s ability to hold oxygen, and, at the same time, it increases the fish’s need for more oxygen to keep active; otherwise, they will be killed or have to move away. The researchers discovered that, over the past five decades, eelpout populations decreased when summer temperatures rose. They also found that warmer summers reduced eelpout population the following years. Danish scientists noted that “it remains difficult to determine that increased temperature is the cause for the eelpout population decrease.” Yet they accepted the connection between temperature and population size as recorded in the field with the effect of temperature on the fish’s oxygen needs as recorded in the laboratory. They found this connection between laboratory and field data to be “persuasive”. 33. It is implied in Paragraph 2 that biologists’ research in labs is _______. A. useless B. unscientific C. incomplete D. unimportant 34. When it is hot enough, eelpouts will either die or ________. A. try to take less oxygen B. swim to colder places C. eat less and rest more D. go down to sea bottom 35. The eelpout population began to decrease ________ years ago. A. 20 B. 30 C. 40 D. 50 其次节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Building Trust in a Relationship Again Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences, 36.____ That is a risk.
