My mom opened the door , finding herself face-to-face with a very disheveled-looking man , Mark , with tears running down his face . My mom , overcome by pity , invited him inside . Curious , I went downstairs to get a better look . The sight of the man , holding his head in his hands and crying , made my chest ache . I raced back upstairs to my room , pulled out my only half-dollar coin from my money jar and ran back downstairs . When I reached the door of the living room , I walked right in and quickly made my way over to the stranger . I put the half-dollar in his hand and told him that I wanted him to have it . Finally he said , “ It’s just that I thought nobody cared . For the last twenty years , I have been so alone . That was the first hug I have gotten . It’s hard to believe that somebody cares . ” Before Mark left , my parents asked him why he had knocked on our door , Mark said that as he was walking the streets that rainy night , hope. less and ready to die , he noticed a bumper sticker(车贴)on our car reading SOMEBODY LOVES YOU . And there’s a growing need for new writers trained to create the $3 billion worth of children’s books bought each year … plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and teenagers . Who are these needed writers ? They’re ordinary folks like you and me . But am I good enough ? I was once where you might be now . My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt , and I didn’t know where to turn for help . Then , I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing ability , and it turned out to be the inspiration I needed . The promise that paid off The Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you , if you show basic writing ability : You will complete at least one manuscript(手稿)suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish our course . I really didn’t expect any publication before I finished the course , but that happened . I sold three stories . And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute . Since graduation , I have authored 34 nationally published children’s books and over 300 stories and articles . Free test and brochure We offer a free ability test and will send you a copy of our brochure(小册子)describing our recognized home-study courses on the basis of one-on-one training . Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and processed foods . When we cook foods , we destroy the natural enzymes(酶)that are part of the food in its raw form . These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food . When we consume food without these natural enzymes , our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream . In both cases , the result is obesity . When too many nutrients are absorbed at once , the body grows fat . Processed foods contain chemical elements , which might confuse the appetite system that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat ; as a result , people often overeat . Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle . The body will either identify these foods as allergens and then store them safely away from the organs as fat , or the remains of undigested food will become acidic and enter the bloodstream as acid waste , which will stick to the blood vessel walls(血管壁)and block the passage of vital oxygen and nutrients heading for the body’s cells . The body’s metabolism(新陈代谢)becomes inactive , and the result is weight gain and obesity . To stop this vicious circle in its tracks , people need to consume food and supplements that will balance the acid already accumulated in body . Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can help . It’s also important to restore our enzyme balance . We need to identify and avoid the foods that cause acid accumulation and consume the foods that increase enzyme production . If we truly want to change and help our body heal itself , we need to take an active approach . 28. We can learn from the 2nd paragraph that __________ . A. it is essential for us to digest some fat B. cooked and processed foods are healthier C. foods with natural enzymes help us keep fit D. absorbing many nutrients is beneficial to our health 29. Processed foods will probably __________ . A. stop body’s metabolism B. be difficult to digest C. destroy body’s cells D. lead to obesity 30. The underlined word “ vicious ” in the last paragraph probably means __________ . A. harmful B. violent C. progressive D. positive 31. To change and help our body heal itself , we need to __________ . A. consume enough acid foods B. identify enzyme production C. avoid restoring our enzyme balance D. eat the right types of raw and whole foods D A study made by University of Sussex found that men and women who frequently used several types of technology at the same time had less grey matter in a key part of the brain . The researchers said : “ Simultaneously(同时), using mobile phones , laptops and other media devices could change the structure of our brains . ” Worryingly , the part of the brain that shrinks is involved in processing emotion . The finding has linked multi-tasking with a shortened attention span , depression , anxiety and lower grades at school . The researchers began by asking 75 healthy men and women how often they divided their attention between different types of technology . This could mean sending a text message while listening to music and checking email , or speaking on the phone while watching TV and surfing the web . The volunteers were then given brain scans which showed they had less grey matter in a region called the anterior cingulated cortex ( ACC ) . The findings held even when differences in personality were taken into account . The study , published in the journal PLOS ONE , is the first to make a link between multi-tasking and the structure of the brain . Researcher KepKeeLoh said : “ Media multi-tasking is become more popular in our lives today and there is growing concern about its impacts on our cognition and social-emotional well-being . ” He added that more researches are needed to prove that multi-tasking shrinks the brain . This is because it is also possible that people with less grey matter in the ACC are more likely to use lots of devices simultaneously . Scientists have previously described brain structure can be altered on prolonged exposure to new environments and experience . Other studies have shown that training – such as learning magic or taxi drivers learning the map of London – can increase grey matter densities(密度)in certain parts . 32. What can we learn about grey matter from the passage ? A. Watching the TV for a long time can reduce grey matter . B. The decrease of grey matter in the ACC affects emotion . C. People with less grey matter prefer to use media devices . D. Taxi drivers in London have more grey matter than others . 33. We can know about the study by University of Sussex that __________ . A. the volunteers in it have lower grades at school B. it can change the structure of grey matter in our brain C. it is the first to link multi-tasking with the structure of the brain D. the findings of it have been supported by some other researches 34. How does the researcher , KepKeeLoh , feel about the study ? A. Surprised . B. Cautious . C. Disappointed . D. Confused . 35. What’s the purpose of the passage ? A. To inform people of the findings of a research . B. To stress the importance of grey matter in our brain . C. To advise people to do more training about our brain . D. To warn people of the possible danger of media devices . 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone , at some point , will suffer a loss—the loss of loved ones , good health or a job .
