Text 10
Rose left school when she was seventeen years old and went to a college for a year to learn to type. She passed her examinations quite well and then went to look for work. She was still living with her parents. A lot of people were looking for typists at that time, so it was not difficult to find interesting work. Rose went to several offices, and then chose one of them. It was near her parents' house. She thought, “I will walk there every morning. I won't go by bus.” She went to the office again and said to the manager, “I want to work here but what will you pay me?” “We will pay you $27 now,” the manager answered, “and $30 in three months.” Rose thought for a few seconds before she answered. Then she said, “All right, then I'll start in three months' time.”
A
After returning from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway owes me 12 pounds,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office. “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me 12 pounds.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely. “I'll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn't have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child.“You look sunburnt,” he said to her.“Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
“Yes,” she answered, shyly.“The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”
“That's fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can't swim a bit yet. Of course, she's only three ...”
“I'm four,” the child said proudly. “I'll be four and a half.”
Harry turned to the mother.“I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “But you didn't get one for your daughter, did you?”
“Er, well ...” the woman looked at the child. “I mean .., she hasn't started school yet. She's only four.”
“A fouryearold child must have a ticket, Madam. A child's return ticket from Jersey costs .., let me see ... 13.50 pounds. The law is the law, but since the mistake is mine ...”
The woman stood up, took the child's hand and left the office.
21.The woman was angry because ________.
A. she couldn't use the ticket for her round trip
B. she had to return home a day earlier than she had planned
C. she spent more money than she had expected
D. Harry had sold her a ticket to Jersey where there was no sailing
22.Harry started talking to the little girl ________.
A. because he was in trouble and did not know what to do
B. because he had a little girl about the same age as this girl
C. because he wanted to be friendly to the little girl who looked so nice
D. when he suddenly realized that he could find a way out from the little girl
答案与解析 A 短文中的这句“Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child.”
23.When Harry said,“The law is the law, but since the mistake was mine ...” he meant that ________.
A. they must follow it, even though the mistake was his
B. he had to be strict with the woman because of the law, although he didn't want to
C. the woman had to pay him 1.50 pounds and the railway would pay her for the hotel
D. she should pay 1.50 pounds, but he had made a mistake, she could go without paying
24.The woman left the office without saying anything because ________.
A. she wanted to go home and get money for the child's ticket
B. she was so angry that she didn't have anything to do with the young man
C. she was moved by Harry's kindness
D. she knew she would have to pay the railway if she insisted
B
Mr. Ma, a famous mental doctor from Beijing once said at an important meeting, “Now many young students can have problems with their minds. Some students become worried because they have to study very hard. Others have trouble getting on with people around them like their parents and classmates. Parents and teachers should care more about this problem.”
Then Mr. Ma gave some examples. One patient, a middle school student from Xi'an, was doing badly in his lessons. He thought his teachers and friends often laughed at him, and he became so nervous and worried. And one night he left his home without telling parents. Another student, a 14yearold schoolgirl from Shanghai, was very afraid of exams. While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn't think of anything to write.
A recent report from Jiefang Daily says about 18% of young students in Shanghai have mental problems. They often feel worried and unhappy. Unluckily, many of them won't go and ask for help. Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor. Others won't talk about their secrets.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Ma offered some good ideas to young people:
Talk to your parents or teachers often.
Take part in group activities.
Try to get on well with people around you.
Go to see a doctor if you often feel unhappy.
25.The students who often become worried or have trouble getting on with others may have ________.
A. no parents
B. no secrets
C. poor memories
D. mental problems

26.The schoolgirl's problem happened whenever she ________.

B. had exams
C. talked with her parents
D. went to see a doctor
While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn't think of anything to write.
27.Some of those with mental problems won't ask for help because ________.
A. they don't want to tell their secrets to others
B. their parents are too busy to look after them
C. doctors can't help them with the problems
D. they can do with the problems themselves
Others won't talk about their secrets.
28.The underlined word “stupid” in the third paragraph means ________.
A. pretty B. happy
C. not clever D. not friendly
Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor.
C
