We had always been so close---why was she suddenly pushing me away?
By Sandi Kahn Shelton
Allie is leaving for college in a week. With her room filled with shopping bags, she won’t 36 about going and she is off with friends most of time. One night----after a long period of 37 between us----I asked what I might have done or said to make her angry with me. She sighed and said, “Mom, you haven’t done anything. It’s fine---just distant.” Somehow in the past we had always found some way to 38 . When Allie was a baby, I would go to the day-care center after work. I’d 39 a quiet place and she would be nursed----our eyes locked together, communicating with each other. In the middle school, 40 other mothers were already 41 for the estrangement(疏远)they felt with their adolescent daughters, an idea 42 to me: I would show up regularly at school, sign her out of class and 43 her somewhere----out to lunch, to the movie, once for a long walk on the beach. It may sound irresponsible, but it kept us close when other mothers and daughters were confused. We talk everything on those outings----outings we 44 secret from family and friends. When she started high school, I’d 45 up with her in the morning to make her a sandwich for lunch, and we’d silently drink a cup of tea together before the 6:40 bus came.
But now we are having two kinds of partings(分离). I want the romantic way 46 we go to lunch and lean across the table and say how much we will 47 each other. I want smiles through tears and the chance to offer some last bits of wisdom. But as she 48 to leave, Allie’s feelings have gone underground. When I 49 to touch her arm, she pulls away. She 50 down every invitation I send. She lies on her bed, reading Emily Dickinson until I say I have always loved Emily Dickinson, and then she closes the book.
Some say the tighter your tie with your child, the greater her need to break away, to have her own identity in the world. The more it will hurt, they say.

There is a lot of talk these days about how kids should be interested in science. Here’s an area of science for everyone, and these cool new books might inspire you to discover your inner scientist.
Scaly Spotted Feathered Frilled by Catherine Thimmesh, 58 pages, ages 9-12
Seeing a picture or a model of a dinosaur, do you wonder how anybody knows what they look like? After all, nobody has seen a living dinosaur. This book explains how scientists and artists work together to re-create dinosaurs. As scientific discoveries have been made, the models have changed. Scientific tests may one day expose what a dinosaur’s coloring was, but now artists have to use their imagination to determine how these huge creatures looked.
Beyond the Solar System by Mary Kay Carson, 128 pages, ages 10-13
This book takes readers back to the beginnings of space exploration—thousands of years ago, when people began star observation—and forward to today’s search for planets in distant parts of the Milky Way. Along with history lessons, readers get 21 activities, such as making a black hole and creating a model of Albert Einstein’s universe using a T-shirt. The activities are perfect for cold winter days.
Ultimate Bugopedia by Darlyne Murawski and Nancy Honovich, 272 pages, ages 7 and older
If you’re always on the lookout for butterflies, this book is for you. Hundreds of color photos of common and unusual insects fill this hardcover. There are fascinating stories related to the photos. For example, do you know an insect feeds on the tears of Asian cattle? There’s a question-and-answer section with an insect scientist and advice on how to help preserve endangered insects.
Journey Into the Invisible by Christine Schlitt, 80 pages, ages 9-12
If you use a magnifying(放大的)glass, you know a leaf looks quite different. This book explains what microscopes do and then shows what happens to things around the house when watched with this amazing scientific tool. The bacteria in your mouth, when magnified 20,000 times, look a bit like swimming pool noodles. Fascinating photos are paired with suggestions about how to learn about the world around you, just by looking a little closer.

Although I love my life, it hasn’t been a lot of fun as I’ve been ill for 28 years.
Music has always been a great love of mine and, in my 20s, when my sickness was more manageable, I enjoyed ten years as a professional (专业的) singer in restaurants, playing and singing folk songs. Unfortunately that was years ago and times have changed. Now I live with my mother on a country farm.
Two years ago, I decided that I would need to have some kind of extra work to make up for my disability pension (残疾抚恤金). As I needed to sleep in the afternoons, I was limited in my choices. I decided that I would consider going back to singing in restaurants.
My family are all musicians, so I was recognized when I went into our local music store. I explained that I wanted to sing again but using recorded karaoke music. I knew that discs were very expensive and I really didn’t have a lot of money to get started. And often you find only three to four songs out of ten on a disc that you can actually use.
When I told the owner of the shop about my idea, he gave me a long, thoughtful look. “This means a lot to you, doesn’t it?” he said. “Come with me.”
He led me through the crowded shop and to a bench with a large professional karaoke box on it. He placed his large hand lovingly on his treasure and said, “I have 800 karaoke songs in here. You can take your pick and I’ll record them for you. That should get you started.”
I could have cried. Thanking him, I made a time with him to listen to all the songs and choose the ones that I could sing. I have come full circle with his help.
His kindness still warms my heart and makes me do just that bit extra, when I have the chance.
