Each year, millions of people go abroad to work, study or travel. It's a great way to find out what life is like in another part of the world!. However ,except the exciting, joy and stimulating, homesickness, stress, fear, and confusion may also surround you in the meantime, which are all symptoms of "culture shock."
At first ,let ‘s make out what is culture shock. It is simply a common way to describe the confusing and nervous feelings a person may have after leaving a familiar culture to live in a new and different culture. That can be exciting and stimulating, but it can also be overwhelming. You may feel sad, anxious, frustrated, and want to go home. It's natural to have difficulty adjusting to a new culture but don’t be depressed, the culture shock is temporary, and what you should do is to confront it positively.
You had to realize that you can’t change the local culture even it looks ridiculous and illogical. You should start to recognize and then appreciate some aspects of the local culture, which is the beginning for you to accept it.
How to fight culture shock?
1.Speak the language of the new culture as often as possible. If you are unsure of your English, boost your confidence by remembering that most British people do not speak a foreign language. Make an effort at improving your language skills by watching TV and listening to the radio. You institution may run free courses for international students.Try to become familiar with your new culture and make local friends. By having friends you can talk to, you are able to ask them questions about what you do not understand.
2.Keep in touch with your family and friends - don't isolate yourself.
3.Find something to laugh about! Your sense of humour is a valuable asset. No matter how bad things may seem, there is always a funny side to focus on. Laughter is a great way to make friends.
4.Avoid comparing them and us, good and bad. Establishing why people behave the way they do and placing their behaviour in a social or economic context is more helpful.
5.Don't just sit there! Find a way to be physically active. There are always clubs that are looking for new members - find one that looks interesting or fun and join up. Or just go for a walk or swim. You will feel better, and increase your chances of meeting new people.
6.Ask questions. Local people will generally be happy to try and explain cultural differences if you ask politely. It may be a good opportunity to talk about differences in your own culture.
Remember, the key to getting over your culture shock is understanding the new culture and finding a way to live comfortably within it while keeping true to the parts of your culture that you value.
It's important to be yourself. Try not to force yourself to change too fast or to change too many things all at once. You will have your own pace of adjusting. Everyone goes through changes in their life, and it may seem that you are going through more changes than the average person — but as long as you hold on to what's important to you and find a good combination between old and new, you'll be fine.
