GreatExpectationsisasuccessfulworkwrittenbyDickens,whowasafamousnovelistinBritishVictorianera.Thisistheoneofhismostmaturebooks.
Thestoryisfullofamazingturningpointsandwecanreadabouthomelessorphans,escapedconvicts,therichandcruelbutheartbrokenwomanwhowashurtinlove,thebeautifuladopteddaughter,theaccidentalbequest,sacredcowsofbeaumonde,betrayal,murderandliesfromfriends,etc.Anauthordescribedtheleadingrole,Pip,withsplendidwritingskillsandheuseddaedalpartstodevelopthisstory.
TheworksofDickenssometimeshavepityforthehumblepoor,criticizethemeansociety,focusontheproblemsofsociety,andsatirizehumanweaknessesandvicesinthesociety.However,thestoriesstillhidethetruthandhonesty.So,thesefeaturesmakehisworksmeaningfulandbecometheimmortalclassics.Likehisotherworks,heusedthesamewritingskillstoexposetheflawsofVictoriansociety.Readingthisbookisjustequaltoexperiencinglife.Nomatterwhetherthemisadventureisthesameinrealityornot,westilllearnsomethoughtsaboutlifeandrealizeeverypartinthisword.
Iamtotallyfascinatedwiththisbookbecauseitsspecialopeningisthatoneteenagerdescribeshisowndestiny.Suchasimpleopeningattractsmyheartatthemomentandleadsmetoreadcontinually.
Atthebeginningofthestory,Piptalksabouthimselfinhisyouthinflashback.Destinymakeshischildhoodpoorandmiserable,buthecauseshisownfurthermisfortune.Heiseveralovelyandchildlikekidandbroughtupbyhissisterandbrother-in-law.Heisalsoanuneducatedandpoorchildinthecountry.Oneday,afortunefallsdownsuddenlyandhebecomesricher.AndhegoestohavegentlemaneducationinLondon.Therefore,hebringshisdreamaboutlovetostartthebrightprospect.Butsomethingalsochanges.Afterwards,hegraduallyhasthegrimpersonality,andevenlooksdownuponhisbrother-in-law,whoisthesweet-tempered,kindheartedmaneventhoughthatmanisPip’sbestfriendinhischildhood.DickensfocusesonPip’sdestiny,changingthoughts,egotismandhisannoyancestatusstillhewantstocorrecthiserrors.PerhapsPip’slifeisadepictionofDickens.
Inanotherviews,maybethe“bigexpectation”inthisbookisanexpectationofbreakinghumanchains.Pipspendshiswholelifegoingthroughandexperiencingthattruth.Whenheisbuildinghisstatusandseekingtruthlove,hesuffersfromdishonor,isolationandfaults.Evenso,hestillfacesthisoverwhelmingpressuresfromthesocietydoughtily.Hehasgutstoovercomeeverydifficultyandsearchforhistruefreedomandhappiness.Alltragediesandsadnesscannotbeathimandhemakesuphismindtoleadhisownlife,befaithfultohisfriendsandsearchforhislove.Andthisisreallyaworthyspirit.
Livinginthatsocietywithpressuresispainful.Theonlydifferencebetweentheelitesandthecommonersismoney,whichbringsaboutgoodeducationandlightfuture.Thestorytotallydescribestheprocessofmovingfromcommonerstobourgeoisie.Andtheportrayalofthefeelingsofpeopleindifferentstagesimpressesthereaderdeeply.
