选择题(阅读下列短文,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。共10小题,每题4分,共40分)
Passage A
Television is a great attraction of modern times and a natural feature of modern living.
As we know, television has several advantages. In the first place it is a great instructor. Films, especially documentary ones, which show us great events and conditions in other parts of the world, greatly increase our general knowledge. Great events like man’s exploration of the moon can be telecast. So too, can live performances of great stars be screened.
In pre-internet time, television had a great importance as a medium of instruction. Children and students found it easier to learn the lessons that were viewed over TV because they could actually see the thing working and hear it at the same time. It was always increasing their store of knowledge through special programs. Television was used to instruct the student masses in many schools or universities, and is still used in such places as the Chinese RTVU, and the British OU.
Television is also of great importance in marketing. This means the screening of advertisements before and after programs. These advertisements serve to provide information of goods and services. Commercial television helps cut down the cost of television charges.
Television serves for delight, and TV entertainment makes a cultural industry of today. People, after a day’s hard work, can sit back in comfort and enjoy themselves with their facorite programs.
Television, however, has a few disadvantages. Watching television too much is harmful. It adds much to the labor of the eye, and little to the activity of the body. People prefer to watch a football game, for instance, rather than play in. Some even give up their previous bobbies, like gardening, stamp-collecting and fishing to the idiot box. School children who spend too much time watching television forget their studies and waste much time.
There should be proper discipline in watching television. Television is a valuable asset to man only when wisely used.

Rapid population growth in developing countries, population declining in developed countries. These are the two trends, which will determine the development of the world population in the future.
In the next 50 years, there will be a marked shift in the regional distribution of the world’s population. A report estimates that by the year 2050, the proportion of people living in developed countries will have sunk to 12 percent, from 17 percent today, and from nearly 30 percent of the world’s population in 1950.
Population figures will continue to drop in developed countries over the coming decades and the average age will continue to rise. The cause for this is the continually decreasing birth rate in most of these countries------ a trend, which for a number of years is extremely difficult to reverse. Low英语类专业综合知识试题第6 页(共8页)

total birth rate mark the population development of many European countries.
Inmany developing countries, the population will continue to grow rapidly. Even today , almost all population growth is seen in the poorest countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In the meantime, the trend, of the number of children per family falling, has slowed down.
Differences within developing countries have never been as big as they are today. The current trend towards lower birth rates could even markedly slow down. In countries such as India, the average number of children per woman could start to increase again in some regions, but the national birth average has decreased in recent years to 3.2 children per woman.
“If we do not manage to decrease population growth in all regions, we will experience powerful shifts in population distribution,” warns Dr Fleisch, an expert of population studies. “This represents a danger, both regionally and globally, for security and peace.”
