Abstract: The famous French writer Antoine de Sain_Exupery, the Little Prince has been loved by children and even adults since it is presented to the public. The author has made full use of the symbolist writing, and by the literary genre fairy tales and the writing style reflects the various symbol passes through the whole work. It’s the most important reason that this work is so charming. The Little Prince is not a simple fairy tale, but a philosophical novel because the author has devoted his philosophy of life experience to it so that there is full of deep philosophical connotations and aesthetic significance in it, This article trys to seek the symbolic meaning of this work from three factors: the overall symbols, the imageries’ symbols and the relationship the concretes symbolic images, based on analyzing the author Sain_Exupery life experience and the background of the times.
Key word: The Little Prince; Symbol ; Symbolic meaning
In literary history,Antoine de Sain_Exupery was a special writer. All his life was full of legendary’s hue. Just as the famous The Little Prince. Antoine de Sain_Exupery’ was born in June29.1900. In 1921, He joined the army .By1927, he became a pilot. By1939.France had been invaded by Fascist in Germany. Although he was injured so many times, and he entered for the war of resistance. In 1940, France was defeated; the army of his soon ran into serious trouble. In1944.He was asked to fulfill the ninth fly task. But he disappeared, became a myth in France.
Antoine de Sain_Exupery, He loved adventure and freedom in all his life. Apart from flying, one of the favorite things was writings. He has finished seven works. Such as << The Night>> (1931). <<The earth of Human being>> (1939) <<The Air Force Pilot>> (1942). << Give A Letter Of Hostage>> (1943). << The Little Prince>> (1943). And after his death, the book has been published <<The Castle.>>. However, which made him well-known all over the world was The Little Prince.
The Little Prince was published in 1943. Which has been translated over one hundred editions and become one of the most editions literatures in France. It has been adapted the film, TV play, modern drama, music drama, cartoon, and so on. One of the successful factors is the technique of symbolic meaning. Pass thought literature’ narrates, we have a better idea of his thinking , more philosophy and distillation. The article was full of poetical, distresses, lonely, and it reconside events to distinguish rigth and wrong.
⒈The overall symbols
One of the usual types of symbolic mode was the overall symbols. The meaning of symbol did not come from special appoint images. it came from the entirety of image system..
The Little Prince was full of the atmosphere of lonely. The planet from which the little prince came was the asteroid known as B-612.This asteroid has only once been seen through the telescope. That was by a Turkish astronomer. The little prince’s planet was scarcely any large than a house. For his escape he took advantage of the migration of a flock of wild birds. On the morning of his departure he put his planet in perfect order. He carefully cleaned out his active volcanoes. He possessed two active volcanoes.
As many other fairy-tales, the outline of The Little Prince was not very complex. “I”, the narrator of the story, was a pilot whose plane had something wrong and landed in the Sahara. In this occasion, the pilot made the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the Asteroid B612. The little prince had escaped from his tiny planet, because he had some quarrel with a rose, which grew on his planet. In that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids.
On his all-alone journey, the little prince met different kinds of people, which included a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer. From these people he got a conclusion that the grown-ups were very odd. Following the instruction of the geographer, he descent in the Sahara, on the earth.
Traveling on the earth, the little prince, who saw a garden of five-thousand roses, overcame with astonishment and sadness, as he considered his rose was unique in the universe before. At that time a fox appeared. The fox, who told the little prince about the meaning of the word “tame”, became his new friend. At the time, to say farewell, the fox made him know that his rose was unique because she was his rose and tamed by him. From that the little prince began to treasure friendship and was responsible to his rose.
At the anniversary day of his descent of the earth, rejecting the pilot’s advice, he went back to his own planet by bite of a snake. “It’s too far. I can not carry this body with me. It’s too heavy.” he said. He tells his friend, the pilot, he must be responsible for his rose, so he had to go back. At the end the author didn’t tell us the ending directly. Maybe it was more significant for us to imagine, and for more, think over.
One of the important characters was the rose. Growing on the planet, she was very beautiful, but her coquetry and vanity suffered the little prince a lot. In spite of their love each other, he soon became unhappy. On the time of his departure, he just knew she certainly loved him. The character of the little prince actually represented the children, and their native thinking and deeds. On the contrary, the inhabitants on the other planets, such as the king, the businessman and the conceited man, they also reflected the defects in the grown-up’s world. The real theme of this fairy-tale with a little sadness, I guess, was the consequence of pure love and friendship in our lives, but not others “matters of consequence” of the grown-ups.
Unbelievable, this little book moved me a lot.I seldom thought about the true meaning of love and life before. Well, now I can say, with my short twenty-year’s life experience, it’s like the stars in the sky that lights my heart. The little prince was not only an ordinary fairy-tale for children, but also for grown-ups, and our teenagers. Nevertheless, when I read this book, I felt a little sad – about ourselves, who are losing more and more innocence.
The imageries’ symbols are that one image focus on one philosophy. conception, or arouse certain feeling, the symbol of sense. The meaning of The Little Prince also extremely rich.
As follows:
⑴The imageries symbols by figures.
The Little Prince was divided into children and grown-up. the children was the little prince, the grown- up were presented who lived in different planet’s strange people and me.
① The Little Prince: The symbol of childhood original shape
The Little Prince, Who was the most elegant figures in whole article. was presented the primeval state on his body. His values were very different from common customs utility in adults world. His values focused on love and poetic. And had sharp-pointed satirically to grown-ups. "I know a planet where there is a certain red-faced gentleman. He has never smelled a flower. He has never looked any one. He has never done anything in his life but add up figures. And all day he says over and over, just like you, I am busy with matters of consequence. And that makes him swell up with pride." But he was not a man—he was a mushroom.’’ ① the article mainly narrates that the little prince traveled in the planet. More revealed the comical and absurd of adult’s world.
The values of the little prince had just reflected Antoine de Sain_Exupery’opinion, In his options, the little prince often appreciated life better than the grown-up. his innocence images was an honest primeval life.
②The six of inhabitant: The numerous visage of adult world.
On his journey, the little prince met different kinds of people, which were includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer, these people were presented the typical portrayal of adult’s world. Up to now, still of special importance.
The first of them was inhabited by a king. Clad in royal purple and ermine, he was seated upon a throne which was at the same time both simple and majestic. For what the king fundamentally insisted upon was that his authority should be respected. He tolerated no disobedience. He was an absolute monarch. But, because he was a very good man, he made his orders reasonable. "One much require from each one the duty which each one can, accepted authority rests first of all on reason".The king was the symbol of politic power affairs.
The second planet was inhabited by a conceited man., For a conceited men, all other men were admirers. Conceited people never hear any thing but praise. "To admire mean that you regard me as the handsomest, the best-dressed, the richest, and the most intelligent man on this planet."This was a ridiculous of vanity.
The next planet was inhabited by a tippler. This was a very short visit, but it plang the little prince into deep dejection."Why are you drinking?","So that I may forget", “Forget what?”, “Forget that I am ashamed,”. “Ashamed of what?” , “ashamed of drinking!” This was a symbol of absurd.
The fourth planet belonged to a businessman. This man was so much occupied that he did not even raise his head at the little prince arrival."“Three and two make five. Five and seven make twelve."I can’t stop...,I have so much to do! I am concerned with matters of consequence. I don’t amuse myself with balderdash. Two and five make seven...”" When you find a diamond that belongs to nobody, it is yours. When you discover an island that belongs to nobody, it is yours. When you get an idea before any one else, you take out a patent on it: it is yours. So with me."On matters of consequence, the little prince has ideas which were very dif- ferent from those of the grown-ups. This was a greedy of human being.
The fifth planet was very strange. It was the smallest of all. There were just enough room on it for a street lamp and a lamplighter. The little prince was not able to reach any explanation of the use of a street lamp and a lamplighter, somewhere in the heavens, on a planet which had no people, and not one house. But he said to himself, nevertheless: "It may well be that this man is absurd. But he is not so absurd as the king, the conceited man, the businessman, and the tippler. For at least his work has some meaning."Lamplighter, who was busy each day, always over and over again, without destination. This was a symbol of blind.
The sixth planet was ten times larger than the last one. It was inhabited by an old gentleman who wrote voluminous books."A geographer is a scholar who knows the location of all the seas, rivers, towns, mountains, and deserts."but he was far away true. This was a symbol of dogma.
The adult’s world was strange by the visual angle of the little prince. The writer had put to use extremely exaggerate and showed that the distorted form of the adult, were also the results of modern society, Thereby; attacking the certain values of our life.
③Pilot: the portrayal of Antoine de Sain_Exupery.
Pilot belonged to the adult’s world. He owned the thinking of adults, but he still remembered that he was a child. Pilot understood life. didn’t care number, he loved flying, giving up utility, so he always felt very lonely. Without anyone that he could really talked to. Just as Antoine de Saint_Exupery.couldn’t suit be the world.
⑵. The imageries symbols by plants.
The writer had described the rose, the baobab, snake, fox, and so on. Compared with other the plants of fairy tales; this image had more profound meaning and philosophy implication
The rose was the symbol of love. Which was luster eye-catching, and enervated, self-willed. It was presented some of acrobatics to the little prince, it was obvious that the initial fell in love‘s behavior.
The baobabs, at the very moment, when they could distinguish from the rose bushes which they resembled so closely in the earliest youth. A baobabs was something you would never, never be able to get rid of if you attended to it too late, It spreaded over the entire planet, It bore clear though it with its roots. And if the planet was too small, and the baobabs were too many, they splited it in pieces. The baobabs was a symbol of dangerous near our life.
The snake, which was the first creature, had been seen by the little prince. Which was mysterious and strange, It had the strong of power. ‘‘I can carry out father than any ship could take you, whomever I touch, I send back to the earth from when he came, you moving me to pity, you are so weak on this Earth of granite, I can help you, some day, if you grow too homesick for your own planet, I can…"②…when the little prince wanted to return to his planet, the snake helped him by venom, it made the body separate from the soul, and let the little prince return to his home.
It was then that the fox appeared. “What does that mean– ‘tame’?” “It is an act too often neglected,” “It mean to establish ties” “One only understands the things that one tames; Men have no more time to understand anything. It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.” The fox grasped the essence of life, which conversation showed that the true essence of love and responsibility. The fox was the symbol of wisdom. It was the time you had wasted for your rose that made your rose
