With my suitcase packed and some sandwiches in a bag, I started for the front door. My mom asked where I was going. “I’m leaving home,” I said. “What’s that you’re carrying?” she asked. “Some clothes and food,” I replied. “If you want to run away, that’s all right,” she said. “But you came into this home without anything and you can leave the same way.” I threw my suitcase and sandwiches on the floor and started for the door again. “Wait a minute,” Mom said. “You didn’t have any clothes on when you arrived, and I want them back.” This infuriated me. I tore my clothes off — shoes, socks, underwear and all — and shouted, “Can I go now?” “Yes,” my mom answered, “but once you close that door, don’t expect to come back.” I was so angry that I shut the door forcefully and stepped out of my home. Then I noticed down the street two neighbor girls walking toward our house. I was so shy that I saw the big spruce (云杉) tree in our yard and jumped under the low-hanging branches (树枝). A pile of dried-up brown needles (针状物) were beneath the tree, and you can’t imagine the pain those sharp needles caused to my body. After I was sure the girls had passed by, I ran to the front door and knocked at it loudly. “It’s Billy! Let me in!” The voice behind the door answered, “Billy doesn’t live here anymore. He ran away from home.” Looking behind me to see if anyone else was coming down the street, I said, “Mom! I’m sorry. I’m still your son. Let me in!” The door opened and Mom’s smiling face appeared. “Did you change your mind about running away?” she asked. “What’s for supper?” I smiled back. 1. A. felt very hungry at that time B. changed his plan to leave home C. wished to eat something before leaving D. wanted to know what his mother prepared for supper B Winter Vinecki began running at age five, but got serious in 2009 after her father died of cancer — that’s when she decided to honor his memory by running a marathon on every continent (大洲) before her 15th birthday. Scope: Team Winter is an organization you founded to raise money for cancer research. How did it get started? Winter: At first, Team Winter was formed to fight childhood obesity (肥胖). When I was 8, I ran a race and raised $1,100 for that cause. But less than a year later, my dad got cancer. I knew I had to do something to help. When I started, my goal was to raise $10,000. I’ve raised well past that — almost $500,000. Scope: What goes through your mind when you run? Winter: When I’m having a hard time during a race, I think about my dad. If he could deal with the pain of cancer, I can deal with any type of pain. He was a very friendly person. He was always smiling and very happy even when he had cancer. Scope: Is your age ever an obstacle (障碍) in your races? Winter: I’ve been turned down by race directors who won’t let anyone younger than 16 or 18 compete. But Diana Nyad, the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, told me, “Never let them tell you it can’t be done.” From then on I knew my age wasn’t the problem. Scope: You’ve probably inspired lots of people too. Winter: I’ve heard about kids doing projects like me. Once in a restaurant, a boy came up to my mom and me and told us his dad had cancer too. Now he’s competing (竞争) in running for his dad. Hearing stories like that helps keep me going. 6. What do we know about Team Winter? A. It always holds different races. B. Its final goal is to raise $500,000. C. It was named after Winter’s father. D. It was to help obese children at first. 7. When Winter has a hard time during a race, what keeps her going? A. Her father’s illness.          B. Her father’s success. C. Her father’s bravery.                      D. Her father’s kindness. 8. Winter’s words in the last paragraph tell us that _____. A. she sets a good example for others B. she hopes others will do what she does C. the boy wants to join Team Winter D. the boy invites her to compete with him C Pete Sparks was a sensitive (敏感的) boy. So sensitive that even his hair was ticklish (怕痒的). You only had to touch his hair a little bit and he would start laughing. When this ticklish laughter started, no one could make him stop. Pete tried everything to control his ticklishness, but nothing worked. So he began to feel sad for being different.  One day in the street, he met a special clown. The clown was very old and could hardly walk, but when he saw Pete in tears, he went to cheer him up. It didn’t take long to make Pete laugh. Later Pete told him about his ticklish problem, and he asked the clown how such an old man could carry on being a clown. “I have no one to take my place,” said the clown. “I have a very serious job to do.” Pete looked at him, surprised. “Come, I’ll show you,” said the clown. So the clown took Pete to many hospitals full of children who were sick. As soon as they saw the clown, their faces changed completely and lit up with a smile. Their short while spent with the clown changed everything for them. That day was even more special, because in every show Pete’s laughter would end up with the kids lying on the floor, dying with laughter. When the visit came to an end, the old clown said to Pete, “Now do you see why I can’t retire (退休), even at my age?” That was how Pete became a clown, and took the special old man’s place. From that day on, the fact that Pete was different actually made him happy, thanks to his special gift (天赋). 9. Pete wanted to change because he wanted to _____. A. make a difference           B. just be a normal boy C. make everyone happy D. just be a special clown 10. The clown took Pete to the hospitals in order to _____. Everyone is born useful. C. Well begun is half done. D. Where there is life, there is hope. D Reporter: Why did you start this new website for Alcott Middle School? Sarah: Three months ago, my mom was complaining about how she never hears about the days our school ends early until after the fact. It happened several times, and she was frustrated that there wasn’t better notification (通知) from the school. Reporter: Didn’t your school already have a website with that information? Sarah: We had a website. But there wasn’t much information on it, and nobody was in charge of keeping it up to date (包含最新信息的). I asked my teacher if our class could update the school calendar. That seemed pretty easy. Reporter: Was it? Sarah: Yeah, and it was kind of fun. So then we asked the principal (校长) if we could redo the whole site. He said okay, so we went to work. We discovered websites that taught us how to make our site look better and added more hot links that people could click to get more information about a subject. We posted photos from basketball games. Our class even started a blog about what’s going on at school. Then we persuaded the teachers to create their own pages. Reporter: So what’s next? Sarah: A few friends and I started a small Web design business. We’re asking other schools if they’ll employ (雇用) us to set up a site like the one we created. Reporter: Wow! That’s pretty enterprising (有事业心的) for a 13-year-old. Sarah: I guess so. But it doesn’t seem like work when you’re doing something you enjoy. 12.
