6、lent,hiscalling,andhisvoice.At 34 years of age he married Olivia LangdonClemens.She was the daughter of a New York coalmagnate,a member of the countrys wealthy elite.Shewouldbepartner,editor,andfellowtravelerinsuccessandfailure for the next thirty-five years.She would alsofurnish him her familys hom
7、e in Elmira,New York,aplacewherehevisitedoftenandwrotemanyofhisbest-lovedbooks.Because of financial problems,Clemens lived inEuropefrom1891-1901,butthiswasneitherhisfirstnor last trip abroad.In fact,he was an inveteratetraveler.Fromtheageof17tothelastfewweeksofhis life he was always discovering new
8、places andrevisitingold.HecrisscrossedtheAtlanticmorethanadozentimesandalsosawTurkey,Palestine,Hawaii,Australia,India,andSouthAfrica.He developed as a speaker and traveled on lecture circuits,much in demand.His early performances combined humor,informationandeloquenceinmeasuresthatdelightedmostpeopl
