The Nobel Prize usually goes to doctors, writers or scientists. But this year a singer has won it for the first time.
This month United States musician Bob Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature(文学). According to the Nobel Prize website, the 75-year-old rock legend (传奇人物) won the prize “for having created new poetic (诗意的) expressions within the great American song tradition”.
People regard Dylan as an informal (非正式的) US historian. Many of his famous songs were written in the 1960s, when he sung about improving the rights of black Americans and protesting (抗议) the involvement (卷入) of the US in the Vietnam War. Blowin’ in the Wind and The Times They Are A-Changin’ are two of Dylan’s most famous protest songs.
Sara Danius, permanent secretary (常任秘书长) of the Swedish Academy, was one of the people who chose Dylan for the award. She said he had been chosen because he was “a great poet in the English speaking tradition”. In the future she predicts that people will read Dylan’s lyrics(歌词) as poems, just like many people read or listen to poems today that was written thousands of years ago. US President Barack Obama agreed with her. “Congratulations to one of my favorite poets,” he wrote on Twitter.
Not everyone thinks it is a good decision, though. Some experts believe the award should not be given to a singer. But BBC’s Colin Paterson says Dylan should be remembered as a writer, not a singer, because he “made the lyrics more important than the music”.
Dylan is still performing his songs and is expected to accept his award on Dec 10.

You must have heard a lot about how people protect the Palace Museum, the Suzhou gardens and other ancient architectural sites (建筑遗址). But what about some more recent ones, such as those built in the last century? Unfortunately, many of them didn’t get enough protection.
On Sept 29, a national list of 20th century Chinese architectural heritage (遗产) sites was published in Beijing. It includes 98 architectural sites and reminds people to protect those masterpieces (杰作), reported China Daily.
Many famous landmarks (地标) and Western-style architectural sites were named on the list. The Great Hall of the People in Beijing and the Russian-style Saint Sofia Cathedral (圣·索菲亚教堂) in Harbin, Heilongjiang are good examples.
“Masterpieces of the 20th century show that Chinese architects’(建筑师) spirit and skills were passed down well,” said Shan Jixiang, head of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics (中国文物学会). “And they need to be passed on to modern times.”
However, many of these buildings didn’t get much attention from the public and have been destroyed (毁坏). In the late 1980s, the old Ju’er Hutong courtyards in Beijing were rebuilt in a modern style. The project didn’t change the traditional Chinese look of the buildings, but gave people there more room to live. It even won the United Nations World Habitat Award in 1992. But some of the people there didn’t take good care of it. They pulled down the walls and built rooms as they wished.
“Masterpieces of the last century should also be treated as cultural heritage sites rather than general buildings. Otherwise, historical information will be lost,” Shan said.

Steel (钢铁), concrete (混凝土) and glass are the usual materials in any skyscraper. But more high buildings are now using wood.
In the last four years, Australia, Norway, England and Canada have all built wooden skyscrapers. The latest one is in Sweden, a new, 19-storey (层) wooden hotel called “Sida vid Sida” (Side by Side).
Why are wooden skyscrapers(摩天大楼) being chosen ahead of concrete ones? Let’s find out.
Is it strong enough?
Wood has been used in many Chinese buildings for thousands of years, but is it strong enough for skyscrapers? “There’s a whole bunch of new materials made out of wood that are structurally (在结构上) able to build big buildings,” material expert Dr Michael Ramage told CNN.
Architects (建筑师) use weaved (编拢) wood to make sure it is. They place layers of wood across one another coated with special glue to create very strong material.
Wood also lasts a long time and doesn’t rot if it is well looked after. For example, the rooftops of Beijing’s Forbidden City and some 700-year-old houses in England are sti
