Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this wayafter lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time —
about eight hours after you wake up — your body temperature goes down. This is what makes
you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there
was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping
pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested
body and mind. Therefore, it is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional
people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease.
Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips
about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time,
try a short nap — even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.

C. About 2: 30 p.m.. D. About 3: 30 p.m..
40. Why do employers not allow workers to take naps?
A. Taking naps is not good for health.
B. Taking naps may lead to heart attack.
C. Taking naps may lead to low working efficiency.
D. Taking naps in a working day reduces production.
41. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Just for a Rest B. All for a Nap

C
When I started working, I couldn’t understand why there were some people who seemed to succeed in anything they tried, while there were others who just couldn’t manage to achieve anything. After a while, I became amazed at the biggest difference lying in setting and reviewing goals regularly.
Then I saw an academic study done by Dr. David Kohl on goals:
* 80% of Americans claim that they don’t have goals.
* 16% of them have goals, but they don’t write them down.
* Only 3% actually have written goals, but they don’t review them regularly.
* Only 1% have written goals and they review them regularly, and these are among the highest achievers in the US.
You need to set goals, independent of whether you want to achieve more or less. Goals are not only about achieving more or wanting to take on more in life — a goal starts with a simple desire.
What do you do with your desires and wants in life? You could both ignore them and leave them to fade away in your mind, or listen to yourself and start taking action to get what you want in life.
On the one hand, you can wish for a miracle, try to put the least amount of effort in, hoping to get the most out, and do nothing. On the other hand, you can get clear on the steps you need to take and take them, slowly, one by one until you reach success in that area and you will live with new amazing results in your life.
Setting goals is the essential part to achieving success in any area. It begins with a desire, and then a written goal, followed by the right attitude and action, and that is your formula for success. Keep reviewing your goals and watch how your vision turns into your reality.
42. The underlined word ‘miracle’ in paragraph 5 probably means ‘_____________’.
A. a lucky thing that you didn’t expect was possible
B. a strong wish to have or do something
C. a kind help that is given to do something
D. a precious time that makes it possible to do something
43. Why did the author mention Dr. David Kohl’s academic study?
A. To show an example. B. To make a comparison.
C. To show his topic. D. To make a conclusion.
44. It can be inferred from the passage that ______________.
A. everyone has goals which will make them succeed
B. people will never forget their goals
C. it is very easy for people to insist on their goals
D. very few people can review their goals now and then
45. From the author’s point of view, ______________.
A. we can’t live without goals
B. setting goals is not an easy thing for most of us
C. it is possible for us to succeed if we set and review goals
D. desires always make us succeed

Great Barrier Reef Choking on Pollutants
Attempts to protect the Great Barrier Reef are failing. A report released Monday by the government in Australia says water quality in the Great Barrier Reef is far below what it should be. It showed that pollution have decreased, but not enough to reach environmental targets.
Sediment (沉淀物) and chemicals can weaken coral, hurting its ability to feed and grow. Coral are live animals that take root in the ocean floor, but they are not plants. Reefs are the hard skeletons (骨架) left at the bottom of the sea by small marine creatures called polyps (珊瑚虫). The polyps then form the larger structure of a reef. Corals also are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the entire planet. They can make a home for invertebrates, crustaceans, fish, and sea snakes.
Steve Miles is Queensland’s environment minister. He says the research shows the Reef needs more protection. “Over that five-year period, we did see some progress towards our targets. Sediment is down 12 percent and pesticides (杀虫剂) loads are down 30 percent. But what is most disturbing is that these results are far from our targets. Progress towards these targets flat-lined in the period 2013-2014. If one of my kids came home with a report card like this, I would be a bit disappointed. There is more bad news here than good news. ” said Steve Miles.
The report also found that fewer than one-third of Queensland’s sugar plantations used techniques to reduce the use of pesticides. Only 28 percent of land managers managed their land properly. They had reduced harmful water run off to protect the health of the Reef. The official target is a 90 percent reduction in pesticide use within three years.
Scientists at the University of Queensland and the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences published their findings Wednesday, July 18
