I’m often asked the question, “How can I best help my children, spouse, family members, staff members, friends, etc. improve/change?” In fact, that might be the most frequently asked question I receive, “How can I help change someone else?” My answer often comes as a surprise and here it is.   In other words, the best contribution I can make to someone else is my own personal development. If I become 10 times wiser, 10 times stronger, think of what that will do for my adventure as a father, as a grandfather, as a business colleague. The best gift I can give you, really, is my ongoing personal development – getting better, getting stronger and becoming wiser. I think parents should pick this valuable philosophy up. ‚  Work on your personal development as parents – that’s the best gift you can give to your children. If you have ever been on an airplane, then you might have noticed the oxygen compartment located above every seat. There are detailed instructions that say, “In case of an emergency, first secure your own oxygen mask and then if you have children with you, secure their masks.” ƒ If we use that same philosophy throughout our whole parental life, it would be so valuable. If I learn to create happiness for myself, my children now have an excellent chance to be happy. If I create a unique lifestyle for myself and my spouse, that will be a great example to serve my children. Self-development enables you to serve and to be more valuable to those around you, for your child, your business, your colleague and your community. That’s why I teach development skills. „ Opportunity will then begin to seek you out. Your reputation will begin to precede you and people will want to do business with you. All of that possibility is created by working on the philosophy that success is something you attract by continually working on your own personal development. A. The key to helping others is to help yourself first. B. Take care of yourself first, and then assist your children. C. If the parents are okay, the kids have an excellent chance of being okay. D. As researchers learn more about how children’s intelligence develops, they are increasingly surprised by the power of parents. E. If you keep refining all the parts of your character and become an attractive person to the marketplace, you’ll attract opportunity. ⑤ What is the author’s philosophy in this article? Before graduation from college, my son began to seek a job. Due to the financial crisis, few companies would like to employ new staff. , the competition was ever-fierce. My son targeted a company that was intended to employ only one person ‚ over twenty candidates. I said to him, “You should not hold too much hope for ƒ that you would feel terribly disappointed when you fail.” He said, “I am not afraid of disappointment. As long as I try, there will always be hope!” My son’s words seemed to come true and he „ (inform) to be interviewed. On that day, my son and other two candidates arrived at the company, waiting for the decisive test. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably … , during which the interviewer only chatted with them. Two days later, my son received the text from the company that he wasn’t employed. My son felt very disappointed. To comfort him, I pretended to be relaxed, saying, “It doesn’t matter! I believe you’ll have more † in the future!” In nightfall that day, my son told me ‡ (excite) that he received another text saying he was employed. He felt very confused about it, so he called the company. ˆ the first text was also part of the test in the interview. ‰ men received the same text in the morning and only my son’s reply was satisfying to the company, so he was employed. I asked my son, “How did all of you reply?” My son said, “One didn’t reply. The other said ‘goodbye’ and I said ‘thank you’.” Only then did I know my son’s “hope” came in that way. That is, when you feel disappointed, don’t forget to say “thank you” to the one disappointing you. It is a piece of cake to say thank you, but Š you are willing to say it in a grateful manner does count. Originally they were called comic books, or comics for short. These were those picture or cartoon stories with dialogue that became very popular with the young people in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. ① They were more like magazines because they were shorter, cheaper and appeared once a month in newsstands at locals stores. Mary were about the adventures of superheroes such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. These were individuals with special powers who fought against evil and injustice. The encl of every story was never in doubt; the superhero, as the representative of the “good guy”, always defeated the “bad guys”, or the characters that represented the evil forces in the world. Conic books probably started in America, but they became popular around the world. ② In Japan. Comic books are called manga. Manga developed out of combination of ukiyo-e(a drawing style dating back to the end of the 18th century) and Western techniques. Comic book artists in several European countries, including France, Belgium, and Italy, also developed their own style with original themes. As a result, it was much more political and reality based than typical superhero type comics found in the United States. ③ This was a longer, more expensive, hardbound publication often sold in regular bookstores. The content clearly aimed at an older, more mature reader. Adventure stories with superheroes remained popular, but the new characters were deeper and more true-to-life, and the stories were more complex. To distinguish this new type of picture book from the earlier youth-oriented form, it was sometimes called a graphic novel. The appearance of a number of successful cartoon stories with mature content in the mid-1980s helped to establish the popularity of the new form. The transition from old to new style is perhaps clearest in Frank Miller’s Barman; The Dark Knight Returns. In this story, an older Batman lives in a world where both the good guys and the bad guys have to make difficult moral choices. People have become more familiar with the new graphic novels, but many still find the term confusing. ④ And the fact that the expression has become an important advertising tool hasn’t helped. For example, some publishers have put together some of their old superhero series and now selling them as graphic novels. As a result, some of new creators have decided not to use the term to describe their original works. Instead, they prefer expressions such as picture novella, graphic album, or original graphic novel. A.Different comic book traditions developed in various countries, B.To some, graphic novels are just comic books, only longer. Since these devices are so common, is time running out for the 500-year-old watch? According to some consumers, yes. New Jersey teenager Charlie Wollman says a watch is “an extra piece of equipment with no necessary function.” ① Louis Galie, a senior vice president at Timex, said that fewer young people wear watches today than five years ago. As a result, some people claim that the watch industry is at a crossroads. However, watchmakers optimistically say that watches regain popularity when consumers reach their 20s and 30s. By then, they are willing to spend money on a quality timepiece that doesn’t just keep good time. ② But in recent years, the watch industry has transformed itself into an accessory business. And for many today, the image a watch communicates has become more important than the time it tells. “Complications” — features that go beyond simple timekeeping — are an important part of a watch’s image. ③ These features include altitude trackers, compasses, lunar calendars, USB drives, and even devices that measure the effectiveness of golf swings. Creativity is also a key element in today’s watches. For example, Japanese watchmaker Tokyoflash makes watches that don’t even look like watches. The company’s popular Shinshoku model uses different color lights to tell the time. It looks more like a Futuristic bracelet than a watch. ④ Using a ring of circles to keep time, this watch makes an excellent conversation piece. Whether a watch communicates fashion sense, creative flair or a love of sports, consumers want their timepieces to stand out. Nowadays, everyone has the same kind of gadget in their bags, so people want to make a statement with what’s on their wrists. Will this interest in wrist fashion last? Only time will tell. A. Watches are one of the essential parts of the personality and there are many types of them. B. He is born with what he needs to win at life. ① Each has his unique potentials—his capabilities and limitations. Each can be a significant, thinking, aware, and creatively productive person in his own right --a winner. The words “winner “and “loser” have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner, we do not mean one who beats the other guy by winning over him and making him lose. To us, a winner is one who responds sincerely by being credible, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine, both as an individual and as a member of a society. A loser is one who fails to correspond authentically. Few people are one hundred percent winners or one hundred percent losers. It is a matter of degree. However, once a person is on the road to being a winner, his chances are greater for becoming even more so. ② He can separate facts from opinion and doesn’t pretend to have all the answers. He listens to others, improve what they say, but comes to his own conclusions. While he can admire and respect other people, he is not totally defined (限定),bound, awed by them. A winner can be spontaneous(自发的). He does not have to respond in predetermined, stubborn ways. ③ A winner has a zest(热情) for life. He enjoys work, play, food, other people, and the world of nature. Without guilt he enjoys his won achievements. Without envy he enjoys the achievements of others. Although a winner can freely enjoy himself, he can also postpone enjoyment. He can control himself in the present to enhance his enjoyment in the future. ④ He does n
