Every year, about 640,000 kilograms of pumpkins are grown in the US.Not all of the pumpkins are eaten. Many are used to celebrate Halloween, the night of October 31th. Halloween is a big celebration in America. One tradition that many people enjoy is to carve* faces in pumpkins, put a light inside and put the pumpkin around their houses. After Halloween they throw all the pumpkins away.
But in Oakland,a city in California, people have found a way to use all those pumpkins,as well as lots of other food waste. They use them to produce electricity.Food waste is taken from supermarkets and restaurants and put into large tanks.Inside these tanks, bacteria* break down the food waste. This releases* methane gas. Then the gas is burned to produce electricity--enough electricity to power 13,000 homes.
Recycling the food waste provides a cheap source of fuel for producing electricity. But there are other good reasons to recycle the food waste too.Methane gas in the air is one of the causes of global warming. When food waste is buried in the ground,it can take 40 to 100 years to break down, and over that time it slowly releases all the methane gas into the air.But when food waste is kept inside the tanks,it breaks down in about three months.Instead of going into the air, most of the methane gas is kept and used.
Other cities around the world are now following Oakland’s example and using food waste to produce electricity.Maybe the next time you turn on the lights in your houses, they will be powered by pumpkins.

March 16 is International Sleep Day.And we should all celebrate the act of sleeping.Studies have shown that a good night’s rest helps us stay healthy. And researchers say sleep is probably the best tool we have for memory and learning. But what about getting rest during the middle of the day?
Short periods of sleep may help our brains work better, says a recent study on napping.Past studies have shown that napping can help babies and young children learn better. And napping can help brain performance in older adults.Taking a nap may also help this group of people fight off age--related memory loss.
Now napping is part of a normal, everyday life in some parts of the world.Take China as an example.Generally speaking,China is a land of nappers.Researchers recently looked at information provided by nearly 3,000 Chinese adults, aged 65 years or older. They wanted to learn if napping after a mid-day meal,a tradition in some areas, had any effect on people.Nearly 60 percent of those 3,000 people said they took a nap after lunch and that their naps lasted anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. The study found that people who took an hour--long nap did much better on mental tests than those who did not nap or napped for shorter and longer periods. In this study ,it seems that the most effective nap lasted for about an hour, but not much longer.
However,Doctor Michael Twery,an expert on the science of sleep and sleep disorders in America, says that an hour long nap may be too long for young, healthy adults. He suggests that we should try to sleep for about 30 minutes or less. And 30 minutes is enough to remove the pressure to sleep and will help us feel more awake to learn and work.If we nap longer,we will get trapped into the deep sleep, which can be hard to get out of.For a time, you are unable to think clearly. The National Sleep Foundation in America also warns that if you have trouble falling asleep at night, control your daytime nap to under 45 minutes. Also you’d better nap before 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
