It can be even scarier when you're a young little blue penguin (企鹅), the tiniest of the penguin species. Luckily, there are some humans willing to help. They stepped in to protect Billy, a blue penguin that appeared on a beach in Christchurch, New Zealand. Spotted on November 29 at the slipway at Moncks Bay, near Summer, in Christchurch, the little penguin immediately attracted a small crowd. Jeff Mein Smith saw the crowd while he was bicycling that afternoon, and he biked home to get his camera. When he returned to the scene, he found that the penguin had received a little sign, one that read “Hi, I'm waiting for my mum to come back. DOC (Department of Conservation) knows I'm here. Please leave me alone. Keep your dog away. Thanks, Billy the baby blue penguin.” Billy didn't move away from the sign. The DOC arrived later that afternoon to pick up Billy, though they were surprised to see it on the beach. “It's unusual for a blue penguin to be out in the open on the beach during the day,” Anita Spencer, a DOC senior ranger, told Stuff. Billy was taken to the Christchurch Penguin Rehabilitation Center after being retrieved from the beach. Volunteers believe the bird may actually be a female penguin, and is around 2 months old. The chick weighs a mere 550 grams, less than a standard basketball. A blue penguin should weigh around 900 grams at this age. Most little penguins grow up to weigh 1 kilogram. The center will help the little penguin gain some weight by feeding it fish juice, before it's set free into the ocean. 24.Why can the world be frightening to a young penguin? A.It is a rare species. B.It faces potential danger. C.It is surrounded by the crowd. D.It is threatened by dogs. Keep your dog away.” 25.It can be inferred from the text that Billy ________. A.is a female penguin B.has expressed its thanks C.weighs less for its age D.prefers living on the beach 解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“The chick weighs a mere 550 grams, less than a standard basketball. A blue penguin should weigh around 900 grams at this age.” 26.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “retrieved” in paragraph 4? A.Ignored. B.Cured. C.Given away. D.Brought back. 根据第四段第一句“Billy was taken to the Christchurch penguin Rehabilitation Center after being retrieved from the beach.” 27.What will happen to Billy in the center? A.It will be reported to Stuff. B.It will be visited by the locals. C.It will be taken good care of. D.It will be fed with fruit juice. C (2019·重庆调研)Life can sometimes go_haywire rather like the feeling you get when you've lost control of your moving car. It's a feeling of complete helplessness and panic that makes us feel overwhelmed In most cases, there is a difference between our expectations and reality. The greater the difference, the greater the feeling is of being overwhelmed. This difference is often created when our expectations are too demanding or when reality changes in a way we did not expect.Think of the weather ruining your carefully made travel plans to get across the state.Think of that illness that made you stay in bed. While we may be feeling overwhelmed with everything going on in our lives right now, there are some steps we can take to regain a sense of control of our lives. We all know we should control our emotion properly and we can be affected greatly when we are overwhelmed, but feeling overwhelmed is part of life. When we're feeling overwhelmed, it only means we are living, breathing human beings. For life is like a roller coaster ride with its ups, downs and turns. It's also like the season with its alternating periods of relative calm and periods of varying degrees of stress and anxiety.Sometimes we forget this. No matter how much we try, we may not be able to control reality. But we can adjust our expectations to match reality. This may mean revising our goals and tasks or quitting projects. It may feel like failure in the moment, like giving up, but this ability is an opportunity to create success in the long term.Working with reality rather than against it can give us hope. When we're feeling overwhelmed, we can easily fall into an allornothing (孤注一掷).We may overlook the things we manage to accomplish when we feel overwhelmed. But celebrating our small wins creates space for gratitude (感激) to take hold in our hearts.Trade our expectations for appreciation and our whole world changes in an instant.Celebrating wins (whatever size!) allows us to clearly see the progress we are making.Acknowledging our small bites and celebrating our wins however small makes us have a more accepting attitude toward the opportunities, the gifts and the joys in our lives. 28.The underlined phrase “go haywire” can be replaced by ________. A.be in a mess B.become dull C.bring surprises D.change quickly 解析:选A 词义猜测题。 29.What is the main idea of paragraph 3? A.We fail to control our emotion sometimes. B.We must learn to control our emotion well. C.It is natural for everyone to feel overwhelmed. D.Feeling overwhelmed is a big barrier to our life. 30.What should we do when we can't control reality? A.Accept our failure and quit. B.Change our goal based on reality. C.Try our best to change reality. D.Find a better way to realize our goal. 根据第四段“No matter how much we try ... or quitting projects.” 31.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.Small bites are better than big wins. B.We should show gratitude to others. C.Celebrating small wins helps us make progress. D.We should appreciate even small achievements of ours. D (2019·沈阳质检)With smart technology increasingly influencing all aspects of our lives, it is only a matter of time before someone invents smart shoes — ones that can be made based on personal needs. Called “ShiftWear”, the sneakers are the brainchild of a team of businessmen, and engineers led by New Yorkbased designer David Coelho. The adaptable shoes can be customized by using a smartphone app. Shoe owners will have the option of selecting a design from a variety of HD patterns by famous artists or creating one themselves. The company's founders imagine the marketplace where artists can not only share but also sell their designs to others. Despite being electronic, the designs are clearly visible even in the brightest sunlight. What's even cooler is that by switching on backlight, users can even show their designs in the dark! According to Coelho, the sneakers will keep their charge forever if only images are displayed. Though they will need periodic recharging, active users have nothing to worry about. That's because the shoes are equipped with special WalkNCharge technology that powers the shoes — with every step. Inactive users also have options of charging the sneakers without using wires. The bottom part of the shoes is covered with Kevlar fibers, a kind of strong material, reducing normal wear and tear. Even better, they are completely waterproof (防水的) and can even be thrown into an ordinary laundry machine for a quick wash! The company predicts that the shoes will range in price from $150 to $1,000 depending on the size of the EPanels where the designs are displayed. This is not the first time that electronics and shoes have combined. Lithuaniabased iShuh Technologies has come up with a similar concept that connects ereader panels to a smart phone app via the Bluetooth. Whether these smart shoes become as popular as our smart devices remains to be seen, though they surely are attractive. 32.What can we know about the smart shoes from the text? A.The electronic designs can not be seen clearly at night. B.The designers make sure every pair of sneakers is unique. C.The bottom part of the shoes can last longer due to special materials. D.The shoes have to be washed by hand to protect the electronics. 根据第四段第一句“The bottom part of the shoes is covered with Kevlar fibers, a kind of strong material, reducing normal wear and tear.” 33.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.How the sneakers are charged. B.How the sneakers can work well. C.What images the sneakers show. D.What technology the sneakers carry. 通读第三段可知,该段第一句“According to Coelho, the sneakers will keep their charge forever if only images are displayed.” 34.The varied prices of the sneakers mainly depend on ________. A.the length of the shoes B.the size of their EPanels C.the designers of the shoes D.the material of their bottoms 解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第四段尾句“The company predicts that the shoes will range in price from $150 to $1,000 depending on the size of the EPanels where the designs are displayed.” 35.How does the author feel about the sneakers' future market? A.Negative. B.Anxious. C.Uncertain. D.Confident. 根据尾段最后一句“Whether these smart shoes become as popular as our smart devices remains to be seen, though they surely are attractive.” Communication skills: What is active listening?
