On Wednesday mornings, when most kids of his age are just settling into class, 9-year-old Cam Myers and his mom are settling into the grand opening of his new coffee shop.
"My favorite coffee is cappuccino," Cam says. This work isn't really a tiring thing for him, but it's a labor of love, as he says, "The most fun part is making the coffee, and I can earn what I need for my life."
Cam's Coffee Creations on South Broad Street in Winston-Salem was brewed[煮(咖啡)] from heartache. Cam suffered a serious brain injury when he was born. It has impacted his speech and motor skills, but not his passion or drive. "A little over a year ago, we both were in a car crying because we were asked to leave school. The school didn't have resources to support him," says Cam's mom Latasha Barr-Lewis. "Fast-forward a year and we are now a resource for students like him." Cam says, "I want to help people with special needs because I have special needs."
In fact, this mother-son team says Cam's Coffee Creations is the first coffee shop that provides job training and employment opportunities for people with special needs.
Already on the opening day, Cam has got his site set on something more. Cam says he wants to have a bigger coffee shop. For his mom, the dream is bigger than an early-morning pick-me-up, "We don't want to be a coffee shop. We want to be an experience. We want to be a community partner," Barr-Lewis says. She hopes they can expand to somewhere with classroom space and training rooms.

Buildings with windows filled with water could save energy greatly, according to researchers backing the new technology.
Traditional glass windows increase the heat and temperature in the room in summers, and let the heat inside escape in winters, resulting in more electricity consumed for air-conditioners and more carbon emissions(排放). Now, researchers at Loughborough University (UK) have created a water-filled window that can overcome these problems.
The "water-filled glass"(WPG) system, designed by Dr. Matyas Gutai, involves a sheet of water being trapped between a panel (嵌板) of glass, and the water is practically invisible. The windows are connected to an indoor storage tank using pipes hidden in the walls, allowing water to flow easily between the windows and the tank.
This system allows the house to cool and reheat themselves automatically. When sunlight streams through the glass, the windows keep the buildings cool as the water absorbs external and internal heat. This warm water is then circulated to the tank. And when the outdoor temperature drops, the stored warm water is brought back to the walls to reheat the building using a monitoring system similar to central heating. The heated water can also be used for domestic purposes. Although some electricity is required to pump the water back and forth, it uses much less energy than traditional air-conditioners or heaters.
Dr. Gutai claimed that WFG can save energy from 47% to 72% compared to when using traditional windows. Once launched into the market, the windows will surely make a real splash, appealing to a large crowd of environmentalists and contributing to reducing our carbon footprint. Currently, the inventor team is testing the windows in two areas with different weather conditions. The research reveals that WFG systems perform well in any inhabited climate—keeping buildings in hot climates cool, and buildings in cool settings warm—without requiring an additional energy supply.

Everyone who uses a smartphone unavoidably produces masses of digital data that are accessible to others, and these data provide clues to the user's personality. Psychologists in Munich (LMU) are studying how revealing these clues are.
For most people around the world, smartphones have become an important part of their daily lives. The digital data that these devices constantly collect are a goldmine—not only for the five largest American IT companies, which make use of them for advertising purposes. They are also of considerable interest in other contexts. For instance, computational social scientists use smartphone data in order to learn more about personality and social behavior. In a study that appears in the journal PNAS, a team of researchers led by LMU psychologist Markus Buhner set out to determine whether data collected by smartphones (such as times or frequencies of use) provide deep understanding of users' personalities.
The LMU team organized 624 volunteers for their Phone Study project. The participants agreed to fill out an extensive questionnaire describing their personality, and to install an App that had been developed specially for the study on their phones for 30 days. The App was designed to collect coded information relating to the behavior of the user. The automated analysis showed that the method was indeed able to successfully get most of these personality traits from their smartphone usage.
Clemens Stachl is aware that his research might further inspire the big IT firms for data. He says, "the potential of these applications—in both research and business—is very great. The opportunities opened up by today's data-driven society will undoubtedly improve the lives of large numbers of people. But we must ensure that all sections of the population share the benefits offered by digital technologies."
