Many of us have ever loved the two toy bears –a brown Teddy bear and a yellow Winnie-the Pooh bear。 The two toy bears come from real stories in life.
In 1902, Theodore Roosevelt, President of the USA, went on hunting. The hunting dogs found an old bear in the forest near Washington D.C and the guide asked the president to kill it. But President Roosevelt disagreed。 A cartoonist drew a cartoon showing that the president refused to shoot the bear. Soon , the bear began to appear in other newspapers. People named the bear Teddy which was Theodore’s nickname(昵称) 。
In 1914, Captain(上尉) Harry Colebourn paid 20 dollars for a black bear which was born in the Canadian countryside。 He named it Winnie (after his hometown Winnipeg) , then he took it to England. In Winnipeg, Winnie served as the mascot(吉祥物). When World War I began, the captain went to France。 Winnie was sent to London Zoo which many kids often visited. Because of its lovely look, the bear became popular with children。 Author A. A. Milne’s son Christopher so loved the bear that Milne created stories about his boy and the bear Winnie-the—Pooh.

We know the famous ones –the Thomas Edison and the Alexander Graham Bells – but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper(雨刮器)? Shouldn’t we know who they are?
Joan Mclean thinks so。 In fact, Mclean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she's developed a course on the topic. Besides learning “who” invented “what" ,however, Mclean also likes her students to learn the answers to the “why” and “how” questions. According to Mclean, “When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to realize chances for inventing and more likely encouraged to give inventing a try.”
So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well, Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights(景色), so she jumped into a streetcar。 Noticing that the driver was trying hard to see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn’t be a built-in tool for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home, Anderson started thinking out ways。 One of her ideas, a lever(操作杆) on the inside of a car that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.
Countless inventions make today’s life convenient。 It’s hard to imagine driving without Garrett A Morgan’s traffic light. It's also impossible to picture a world without Katherine J。 Blodgett’s new idea that makes glass invisible(看不见) 。 Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?
58。By mentioning “traffic light" and “windshield wiper”, the writer wants to tell us that countless inventions are ___ A. useful, because their inventors are famous B. not useful, though their inventors are famous C。 useful, though their inventors are less famous D. not useful, because their inventors are less famous
59。professor Joan Mclean’s course helps students ___ A。 add color and joy to students' school life B. prepare students to try their own inventions C。 finish his teaching task by Mountain University D. remind themselves of the windshield wiper’s invention
60。The windshield wiper was __ A. invented by Anderson by mistake B. invented by Anderson by accident C。 invented by Anderson after his experience in a storm D。 invented by Anderson after hearing the suggestion of a driver
61。Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage? A。 How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?B。 Shouldn't We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper? C。 How to Create a Built—in tool for Cleaning the Window? D。 Shouldn’t We Learn Invention Courses in Universities?

Scientists have made a map of the eye color of people in Britain。 They found out that the most common color is blue. The scientists say that thousands of years ago, all British people’s eyes were brown。 The researchers found that 48 percent of British people have blue eyes, 30 percent of people have green eyes and that 22 percent have brown。 The area around Edinburgh in Scotland was the place where most people had blue eyes. Over half (57 percent) of those in and around Edinburgh have blue eyes. The southwest of England has the fewest blue—eyed people. Just 35 percent of people living there are blue eyed。 The scientists say they do not know why some areas of Britain have a lot of blue-eyed people。
Alistair Moffat, the lead researcher of the study, said the number of people with blue eyes is increasing because people find them more attractive(有吸引力)。 This means people with blue eyes are more successful in finding a partner and having children with blue eyes . He compares blue eyes to the tail of a peacock(孔雀), saying a more colorful tail will get a peacock more mates. Dr.Moffat says people are attracted to the sparkle(光亮)in blue eyes。 He said light reacts(相互作用)with blue eyes to give a sparkle effect. Darker eyes absorb light so they generally have less sparkle。 Another scientist, Hans Eiberg, offers an explanation why blue eyes are popular. He said, “There is something attractive about blue eyes, maybe because they used to be so rare(稀少)".
62。What have scientists made? A. A new eye color B. Some findings of the eye color C。 A new kind of eye D。 Explanations for eyes
63。Who is Alistair Moffat? A。 A mapmaker B。 An eye doctor C. A researcher D。 A keeper of peacocks
