This morning my family and I went to a friend’s home to help her get things back in order. She was one of the unfortunate people whose home was recently destroyed by the Rowlett ,TX tornado(龙卷风). One side of her home fell off and a large portion of the roof was gone. Heavy rain fell the rest of the night and all of the next day following the tornado, creating even more damage to her belongings. The home was a total loss. Still, there was much that was salvageable, and our job today was to help her sort through the debris(碎片)and find anything with actual value that she may want to take with her.
My husband helped to move furniture and other things to storage while our two sons helped clean up the yard. My oldest daughter and her boyfriend helped as well. My another daughter and I swept up all of the areas of debris, sorting out the things that are important. We worked systematically, clearing the main living spaces first, then moving onto the kitchen, the laundry area, and then the master bedroom.
By the time we were done today, though there was no denying that the room had met with disaster, we had gone far to restore order from the loss that had been there before.
My friend, who had been having trouble sleeping, was being affected by that loss negatively. I hoped that if we could restore order, she would finally start to feel some sense of peace and her mind would be quiet and allow her the much needed rest.
She posted on Facebook just a little while ago that for the first time she slept well at night. For me, what a wonderful and meaningful way to begin the New Year!

Men have long been puzzled by the amount women pack, when they go on holiday. They despair as they watch their beloved spend hundred of pounds on extra baggage charge. According to a new survey, nearly half of the women surveyed admitted to lying about the weight of their case to their partner before leaving for the airport, in fear of being made to unload some unnecessary items.
But it is a fact that women pack more than they need. On average, a woman needs around 57 items in her suitcase for a two-week holiday, yet many women pack nearer to 150 items, ranging from skirts, tops, underwear to swimwear and high heels. In addition, women pack more sun cream, make-up and hair appliances than they were likely to need. They all take up space in the suitcase, but only a third of them will see the light of day once at the holiday place.
A 79 percent of women admitted to taking extra items away with them, with the reason for this being “just in case”. Women plan their wardrobe months in advance. Packing enough clothes and other items to last a month is not enough for some women. They’d take an opportunity to shop for new items while holidaying abroad, returning with even more luggage in their cases.
Professor Karen J. Pine said: “Women are tempted to take, familiar items with them on holiday, often everything except the kitchen sink. Some people find traveling stressful, particularly when they’re unsure about the home forts available at their holiday place. They over-pack to help cope with those feelings of stress and reduce the uncertainty.”
This will e as no surprise to some men, who are used to trying to squeeze their partner’s luggage into the boot of the car with their own, smaller case. On the other hand, men pack very lightly, with only an average of 40 items for a two-week holiday.
8. The best title for the text would be _________.

A. Opposed. B. Supportive. C. Positive. D. Concerned.
11. Professor Pine’s words imply that ________.
A. going on holiday will cost a lot
B. women don’t prefer to go on a holiday
C. people tend to feel tired and stressed on holiday
D. it’s understandable that women to over-pack in a sense

Scientists found sea levels are rising faster today than anytime over the past 3,000 years. Another group of scientists found that January temperatures in the Arctic hit a record high. The sea level researchers gathered information going back 28 centuries. Their findings were released(发行;释放)Monday by the Proceedings Of the National Academy of Sciences.
Robert Kopp, from Rutgers University in New Jersey, is the paper’s lead author. He said the 20th century rise was “extraordinary” when pared to the past 3,000 years? And, Kopp said, “The rise over the last two decades has been even faster.”
When temperatures rise, so do sea levels. That is because snow and ice melt, or break off from glaciers. They flow into the sea. The increased water makes the sea levels rise.
The best judgments show that temperatures around the Earth have risen more than a half-degree Celsius since 1880. Scientists say that most of that rise is because of gases, released into the air by machines that humans have built. And it is not going to get better.
The water is going to rise, said Stefan Rahmstorf. He is a professor of ocean physics at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany and the study’s co-author. “I think we can definitely be confident that sea level rise is going to continue to accelerate if there’s further warming,” he told The New York Times. He said “inevitably (不可避免地)there will be” more warming, which means it will continue to rise.
The researchers said the Earth’s sea level could rise more than a meter by the year 2100. Scientists from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration reported that temperatures at the North Pole hit record highs in January. This news es after 2015 has been the hottest year ever recorded.
On average, the North was almost 4 degrees Celsius higher in January than average temperatures between the years 1951 and 1980. This news es after researchers reported a record low amount of sea ice up North. The National Snow and Ice Data Center said the amount of January sea ice is 644,000 square kilometers below average.
12. What is the fundamental reason for sea level rise according to the scientists?
A. Gases. B. Temperatures. C. Humans. D. Machines.
13. Who are the researchers of the study?
A. Robert Kopp and Rutgers. B. Stefan Rahmstorf and Celsius.
C. Scientists in New Jersey. D. Robert Kopp and Stefan Rahmstorf.
14. What can we know according to Stefan’s research?
A. Sea level rise will stop.
B. Sea level rise is going to speed up.
C. There must be less warming.
D. The temperatures at the North Pole are the highest in January.
15. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Sea Level Rises B. A Study of Sea Level
C. A News Report D. Temperature Rises
