13、Dear Alice
You really have two different questions here, so we’ll discuss them one at a time. Your problems at school may be a result of a number of things. You don’t say much about how these classmates get along with each other. It’s possible that all the students are feeling a little cautious(谨慎的) in the first term. It’s also possible that the others are unkind. If this is not so, you have to find out why you are the class "outsider".In your letter you say you often offer to help others with their work. Is it possible that your classmates don’t understand your offers? Could it seem that you were trying to "buy" friends with these offers, Is it possible that you took no notice of your classmates when you had your good friend near you? They may have felt hurt at that time. It may take a time for them to believe in you if so. Try to ask one classmate directly what the problem is. If you hear a negative(负面的) answer, at least you’ll know what to do
Yours truly
Shelia

16、Recently, a three-part BBC documentary Are Our Kids Tough Enough? Chinese School has become a hot topic. The TV documentary followed five Chinese teachers who spent a month working with 50 teenagers, aged from 13 to 14 at Bohunt School in the southern English county of Hampshire. The Chinese teacher used Chinese ways to teach the students instead of British ways.
The first part, broadcast on August 4th, showed the students performing morning exercises, taking part in a long-distance running race and learning how to do eye exercises during breaks.
It was tough on the teachers, because they had to spend a great deal of energy and time keeping the noisy students quiet, and the leading teacher complained that the classroom was always “chaotic(混乱的)”. At the same time, many students complained that the teachers were too strict, the lessons were boring and they found it difficult to get used to the new ways.
The TV documentary causes a debate(争论). Some people say that Chinese teachers are too strict and fail to engage students’ interest. 17、Have you ever seen a greenhouse? Most greenhouses look like a small glass house.
Greenhouses are used to grow plants, especially in winter.Greenhouses work by trapping heat from the sun, the glass panels(板) of the greenhouse let light in, but keep heat from escaping. This causes the greenhouse to heat up, much like the inside of the parked in sunlight, and keeps the plants warm enough to live in winter.
The earth's atmosphere is all around us.It is the air that we breathe.Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere behave much like the glass panels in a greenhouse.Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, passing through the blanket of greenhouse gases. As it reaches the Earth's surface, land, water, and biosphere(生物圈), they take up the sunlight's energy.Once the heat is taken up, this energy is sent back into the atmosphere. Some of the energy passes back into space, but much of it remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to heat up.
The greenhouse effect is important.Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the earth warmer than usual.Even a little extra warming may bring problems to humans, plants, and animals.

18、 The father’s role in the family is important. One researcher says babies who are cared for by their fathers have greater cognitive (认知的) development at one year of age than babies not cared for by their fathers. Another researcher reports that by spending time with their pre-school children, fathers can help to develop children’s language ability. Researchers also point out that for school-age children, fathers are one bridge with the outside world.
Fathers who value (重视) education have children who do better in school than those children whose fathers don’t value education. What’s more, fathers who spend quality time with their children may give their children happy memories which may last a lifetime.
While each father is a unique person who educates children in his own style, good fathers have something in common.
Good fathers attend their children’s school activities. They also involve the children in their lives and the adult world by taking them to see the workplace, or by taking them when the car needs to be repaired, etc.
Good fathers expect a great deal from their children, but also accept and support the unique individuals (个体) that their children are becoming.
Good fathers prefer explanations and reasoning to force.
Good fathers know their time with children is really an investment (投资) in them.
