A teacher cleared off his desk and placed on top of it a few things. One of them was an empty mason jar(玻璃瓶). He filled the jar with golf balls until he could put no more. He looked at the classroom and asked his students if they agreed that the jar was full. Every student agreed that the jar was really full.
The teacher then picked up a box of small pebbles(卵石) and poured them into the jar with the golf balls. The pebbles filled all of the openings in between the golf balls. He asked the students if the jar was full. Once again, they agreed.
Now the teacher picked up a bag of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled in all of the empty space left between the golf balls and pebbles. He asked the class again if the jar was full. The students agreed again.
The teacher said, “I want you to know that this jar represents your life,” he started. “The golf balls represent the important things: your family, health, friends... The pebbles represent the other things in life, such as your job, house and car. The sand is every small thing. If you put the sand in first there is no room for the pebbles or golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all of your time on the small things, you will never have room for the things that are most important.”
Pay attention to the important things in your life. You should know there will always be time to clean the house or go shopping.

When we look at a picture of Earth from space, there are areas of green, blue, and white. Most people will recognize that the green is land, the blue is water, and the white is clouds. Taken as a whole, Earth is mainly blue. That is because of the amount of water it has that covers the surface.
So, how much of Earth is water? About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered in water. Of that 71%, the oceans hold 96.5% of the water. This water found in oceans is all salt water. The remaining 3.5% of the water is fresh water, which can be found in lakes, rivers, glaciers (冰川), and in the ground. Fresh water is what people use for farming, raising animals, drinking, and daily activities such as taking showers and washing clothes or dishes.
Does the amount of water stay the same? For the most part, yes. Water on Earth is part of a closed system. That is, water is always moving and changing forms between ice, liquid, and gas. The form of the water changes all the time, but the total amount of water on Earth remains the same.
If Earth is not necessarily running out of water, why are people worried? Why do we need to think about saving water? First, humans can only use fresh water, which is only 3.5% of all of Earth’s water. Second, of this 3.5%, only 1% is available(可利用的)for human use. Most fresh water is found in glaciers far from where anyone lives. Third, the amount of water that is useful for humans is being used faster than it can be cleaned and put back into the environment.
Now, knowing the facts about water, it is our job to make sure we use Earth’s water in a good way.
9.Where can 96.5% of the water on Earth be found?
A.In rivers. B.In lakes. C.In glaciers. D.In oceans.
10.What does the writer mean by saying “Water on Earth is part of a closed system.”?
A.The amount of water becomes smaller. B.The amount of water stays the same.
C.The amount of water keeps changing. D.The amount of water becomes larger.
11.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Humans can use all the water on Earth easily.
B.Most fresh water is found in the ground easily.
C.Humans can’t use 2.5% of the fresh water freely.
D.Water for humans can be cleaned and recycled fast.
12.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The reasons why Earth is in different colors.
B.The people who use the most water on Earth.
C.The amount and different types of Earth’s water.
D.The proper ways for people to use fresh water.
(D)
Animal behavior is an interesting and attractive study. Scientists research the ways animals use to look for food. They study how animals protect themselves from their predators, and which animals kill other animals for food. All of this helps us understand how useful animals can be.
Each country or culture raises some animals for food. In the United States, people mainly eat meat from cows, chickens and pigs. In other countries, people might raise sheep or buffalo(水牛)for meat. These differences come in part from weather and other environmental conditions. People around the world eat all kinds of fish and shellfish from oceans and rivers. In some countries, people don’t always choose some animal groups, such as dogs, for food while in other countries such animals may become people’s favorite food.
In West Africa, animals provide humans with more than food. They have been helping people do daily work for thousands of years. Horses, oxen, and other work animals pull heavy things. Elephants, camels and other animals carry people and things from place to place. Carrier pigeons(信鸽)have been used to send messages.
People also receive health benefits from animals. For example, dogs and cats can help calm people down. This is helpful for people fighting illnesses. Animals can also reduce stress, helping people to draw their attention to learning new information, such as reading. When people are walking their dogs or horses, it encourages exercise.
Animals and humans share space on Earth, so keeping a healthy relationship with animals around us is in our best interest.
13.The underlined word “predators” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A.neighbours B.friends C.enemies D.children
