be a special repetition,arrangement or omission of words with literal meaning,or a phrase with a specialized meaning not based on the literal meaning of the words in it,as in idiom,metaphor,simile,hyperbole,or personification.,Definition,Figures of speech often provide emphasis,freshness of expression,or clarity,heighten effect,or create suggestive imagery.However,clarity may also suffer from their use,as any figure of speech introduces an ambiguity between literal and figurative interpretation.A figure of speech is sometimes called a rhetorical figure.,Function,Simile,a figure of speech makes a comparison between two unlike elements having at least one quality or characteristic in common.To make the comparison,words like,as,as.as,as if,and,like,are used to transfer the quality we associate with one to the other.,As cold waters to a thirsty soul,so is good news from a far country.,My love is like a red red rose.,Tom is as tall as
