ploughs the land.,b)The meaning in,The ship ploughs southward in the blue ocean,.,c)The meaning in,The truck ploughs the road after the snow storm.,犁地,耕地,乘风破浪前进,犁除,去除,5/86,2)Team,a)a group of horse,b)a person of extreme abilities,c)a group of people,6/86,Background Information,Alfred Edward Housman:usually known as,A.E.Housman,was an Englishclassical scholarand poet, best known to the general public for his cycle of poems,A Shropshire Lad,.,7/86,Find out the correct sequence,Is my team ploughing,That I was used to drive,And hear the harness jingle,When I was man alive?,Ay,the horses trample,The harness jingles now;,No change though you lie under,The land you used to plough.,8/86,Is football playing,Along the river shore,With lads to chase the leather,Now I stand up no more?,Ay,the ball is flying,The lads play heart and soul;,The goal stands up,the keeper,Stands up to keep the goal.,9/86,Is my girl happy,That I thought hard to leave,And has she tired of weeping,As she lies down at eve?,Ay,she lies down lightly,She lies not down to weep:,Your girl is well contented.,Be still,my lad,and sleep.,10/86,Is my friend hearty,Now I am thin and pine,And has he found to sleep in,A better bed than mine?,Yes,lad,I lie easy,I lie as lads would choose;,I cheer a dead mans sweetheart,Never ask me whose.,11/86,C.Discussion,Things the dead man is concerned about now,Which stanza(s),What did he do with them before his death,How are they now after his death,Harness bells,Horses,Farming,Playground,Young people,Sweetheart,Family,Parents,Furniture,Friend, football,Not his concern,Not his concern,Not his concern,Not his concern,Not his concern,Not his concern,Not his concern,Yes,stanzas 1&2,Yes,stanzas 5&6,Yes,stanzas 7&8,Yes,stanzas 3&4,He drove his horses ploughing his farmland, and heard the harness jingle,Someone is ploughing the land driving his horses, and the harness jingles the same,He loved his girlfriend very much, and did not like to see her crying. He was anticipating that his girlfriend would be mourning his passing away every evening when she was alone,His girlfriend is now happy. She lies down lightly every evening, instead of mourning. She is now well contended.,He cared about his friend, and his friend probably did not have good furniture when he was alive.,Young people played football games along the river shore, and he stood up to watch them play when he was alive.,His friend now lies easy and enjoys life all the same.He even has a dead mans sweetheart to cheer up.But he doesnt like the dead man to ask whose sweetheart she used to be,The ball is flying, and young people are chasing it hard in playing. The goal and the keeper,12/86,2.Compare the results of the comparison in the above table between what remains the same, and what has changed before and after the death of the questioner. What message do they convey to the reader?,It can be said that life remains the same after the death of the questioner. His farmland, the football playing, his friend, and even his girlfriend who is as happy as before. But it can also be said that although life goes in the same way as when the questioner was alive, something has changed. His girlfriend has become someone elses girlfriend, and his friend has taken his place to cheer up his girlfriend. The questioner has lost everything of the pleasures of life while the living people have them all the same.,13/86,3.Can we change the sequence? Why?,The poem begins with an ordinary question about farming. The questioner is naturally concerned about his farmland as he was a farmer. So he wanted to know if his horses are still ploughing the farmland. Then the poem moves on to the playground where the young people of the village often play football. He used to stand there to watch tem play, and the football is also part of his life. The game is still going on,and the young people of the village are still playing there. The poem than moves to the next topic about his girlfriend. At this point,he thought that his girlfriend might be too grieved about his death. But the answer gives the reader a little surprise. She isnt so grieved. In fact, she is contented. The reader might be surprised at his answer because how doses he know about ones sweetheart, lies down lightly, and,is well contented,?The poet did not give us the answer, but the last two stanzas reach the climax when the questioner asks about the life of his friend. And the answer finally clears the readers doubt that he was the man who is now, cheering up the dead mans sweetheart, but he would like the questioner, never ask me whose,.,14/86,The stanzas are well organized form a common question about the questioners life, then his sports, then his girlfriend, and finally his friend who lives with his girlfriend.Readers might ask what the point of this conversation is at the beginning. The doubt gradually becomes heavier until the last two stanzas come out.He would find an increasing tension in the quest for an explanation.,15/86,What tone can you detect in the answerer when he answers the questions,.,His tone changes as he answers more and more questions. He light-heartedly answers the questions about the farming, and the sports with a bit assuring tone up to this stage. But gradually, his tone begins to be impatient(,be still,my lad and sleep,).He strikes the reader as evasive about talking about the sweetheart. Finally he sounds completely uncooperative when he says, never ask me whose,.The changes in his tome reveal his guilty conscience. He is still enjoying life while the questioner has lost everything because of death.,16/86,Formulas for asking about&expressing impressions,Sometimes he seems a bit strange, doesnt he?,How did Toms story strike you?,Some people say when we need him most,he is nowhere to be found.,It seems to me that hes a busy guy,and an important person for the company.,He strikes me as an unreliable person.,Mary seems to be a nice girl.,He looks angry today.,Looks like were going to be late again.,The other child looked neglected.,None of the people I have interviewed so far have impressed me,17/86,Proverb,Love is like coke:something you get as the product of making something else.,Why do we consider Coke a by-product of something else?,The short term for Coca-Cola,18/86,TEXT:SOMEONE WAITING,Part 2 Reading and Language that life needs to be this important all the time. She wishes all the people who go on a journey could come back to find someone waiting for them, and wishes they could leave with someone to see them off.If dying is like this,a passage, then she isnt afraid any more.,30/86,Main idea,The narrator of the text tells us her observation of peoples final moments at the airport. She recalls her own experiences of meeting her daughter and being met when returning from her grandfathers funeral.Somehow the emotion she feels seems not at all out of place for the airport. From peoples arrival or departure, she concludes life needs to be this important all the time. She realizes that if dying is like this,a passage, then she is unafraid.,31/86,Para 1,I am sitting at an airport watching people in
