21.(6分)“I’ve always loved food,” says Cassie Dawson in the kitchen of her flat in London. “But I’ve become bored with eating out. I’ve had too many disappointing meals and paid too much money for them! At one point, fed up with my complaint, a friend suggested I open my own restaurant. Impossible, I thought. But then I heard about supper clubs...”
Supper clubs are a mixture of a restaurant and a dinner party — you go to a stranger’s house and he/she cooks dinner for you. Like a restaurant, you pay for your food, but like a dinner party, you eat at the same table as other people. They are advertised through social-networking sites with a menu and little information about where the supper club is until just before the meal.
“It’s like running a secret restaurant for one night,” says Cassie. “The next morning, I set the tables and chairs aside. I put the TV back and it’s my living room again.”
Cassie opens her “restaurant” for people about once a month, and she really enjoys the evenings she’s had so far. She uses fresh, local ingredients and a typical meal costs about the same as a takeaway — much less than a restaurant meal. So how does she make money out of it?
“I don’t,” says Cassie. “In fact, at first I was worried about losing money on my club. I’m good at cooking but my maths is terrible! But I was surprised by how cheaply I could make a good meal. This isn’t about money. It’s about a different eating experience.”
And what about inviting complete strangers into her house? Was Cassie ever nervous about that?
“Not at all,” she says. “Almost everyone at the supper club is just interested in having a good meal with other interesting people.”
1、Why did Cassie decide to open her own restaurant finally?
A.To earn a living. B.To satisfy her friend’s needs.
C.To make friends with strangers. D.To cook cheap and good meals for others.
2、What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Dinner parties. B.Supper clubs. C.Fresh ingredients. D.Invitations to dinner.
3、We can know that Cassie’s restaurant ________.
A.serves meals for free B.only serves takeaways
C.is only open to her friends D.is only open in the evening
4、How does Cassie feel about her restaurant now?
A.Worried. B.Content. C.Annoyed. D.Sensitive
22.(8分)Do you ever wonder why trees begin to bud (发芽) earlier in some cities? Scientists finally found the answer but it’s not very pleasant. New science suggests a relationship between light pollution and the timing when trees produce buds, which signals the arrival of the spring season.
Light pollution is defined by the Lighting Research Center as the unwanted consequence of outdoor lighting such as street lights. Excessive (过多的) man-made light at night results in disturbed natural cycles, and also prevents the observation of stars and planets at night. But its effect on the environment goes beyond that.
By studying some trees, researchers found out that trees that are more exposed to artificial lighting at night bud up to 7.5 days earlier than those at the natural nighttime setting. And they found out that light had a more significant effect than temperature when the buds came out. The early budding may cause problems for insects, which feed on leaves, and the birds which then feed on them in turn. Professor Richard, who helped lead the research, explained that more than the budding of trees, the study implies the danger to the balance of the ecosystem. “At the moment, caterpillars (毛毛虫) are timed to hatch to make the most of the opportunities to feed on freshly budded leaves, and birds hatch in time to feed on the young caterpillar,” he said.
Migratory (迁徙的) birds are also negatively affected by light pollution. The glare might confuse them and make them lose their flying sense. The phenomenon might explain why some birds accidentally knock into buildings.
Such results stress the need to pursue studies that aim to measure the effect of light pollution. If the issue were left to continue, it is estimated that by 2100, spring would begin almost a full month earlier than it does today.
1、What will happen if there is too much man-made light?
A.People’s eyesight will be damaged.
B.The ecosystem will likely lose its balance.
C.No stars or planets may be observed at night.
D.Animals’ living habits may change suddenly.
2、How does the early budding affect insects or plants?
A.It will cause the rising number of insects.
B.It could lead to trees growing fewer leaves.
C.It may result in some insects going hungry.
D.It might push insects to hatch more slowly.
3、What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The effect of light pollution is destructive.
B.The spring of 2100 will become much longer.
C.Light pollution should be taken seriously.
D.A further study on light pollution is scheduled.
4、What is the suitable title for the passage?
A.Why spring comes earlier in some cities
B.Why light pollution needs to be studied
C.How trees’ early budding takes place
D.How much light is “too much”
23.(8分) In Australia, the bilby (兔耳袋狸) project is seen as an important part in protecting the nation’s wildlife. Bilbies are known for their long ears and large back legs. They usually sleep during the day, and are awake at night. They look a lot like rabbits and grow to about 2.5 kilograms.
For the first time in 2018, bilbies are running wild in Southeastern Australia. The small animals were once widespread across much of Australia, but were last observed in the wild in New South Wales state in 1912. Every year bilby populations continue to decrease. Wildlife experts are afraid that the bilby, a small marsupial, could eventually disappear forever, either because of land clearing or fires. Another reason is a threat from cats and foxes, which hunt down and kill bilbies.
In northern New South Wales state, environmentalists are celebrating what they are calling a historic moment. Thirty bilbies from a captive breeding program have been released into a large predator-free enclosed area north of Sydney. Without the protection of a 32-kilometer fence, experts say the animals probably would not survive.
Tim Allard heads the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, which is involved in the project. He says the release of these beloved animals is a big deal. “There are some remaining wild bilby populations, but they get predated upon heavily by feral cats and foxes. Bilbies only really survive behind fenced areas.” Allard said the point of doing this project is to return the countryside to what it used to be before Europeans arrived. “So in the not-too-distant future, you will be able to go inside the fenced areas and it will be like stepping back before Europeans turned up,” he said.
1、What is the main idea of paragraph 1?
A.The shape of the bilby. B.The habit of the bilby.
C.The weight of the bilby. D.The characteristics of the bilby.
2、The followings are the reasons for Bilbies’ disappearance EXCEPT ________?
A.Trees’ clearing. B.Fires’ bursting. C.Cats’ hunting. D.Foxes’ killing.
3、What docs the underlined word “enclosed” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Involved. B.Protected. C.Hunted. D.Enlarged.
4、From Allard’s words, what do we know?
A.The release of bilbies can make much money.
B.Cats and foxes cause the decrease of bilbies.
C.Nature reserves are needed to protect bilbies.
D.Europeans shouldn’t turn up in the countryside.
24.(8分) Have you ever been given something you don’t like or doesn’t fit, but you don’t want to hurt the feelings of the person who thinks about you? You’re not alone. Everyone has received an unwanted gift at least once in his or her life. That doesn’t mean the item is bad or useless. It simply means that it doesn’t work for you.
If you find yourself with something nice but that doesn’t fit into your lifestyle, consider regifting it. Before you do that, make sure you understand the manners of this practice that is more and more common as people find it difficult to make ends meet to a great extent.
There are specific things you should do to an item. Failure to do any of them may create an awkward situation. You never have to lie about what you are doing, but you don’t want to be in the position of having to explain anything. For example, remove the original wrapping paper and rewrap it in your own; make sure the box is in good condition so the item doesn’t appear used; check the item and make sure there are no cards or names on the packaging; inspect the item and make sure it is in excellent condition.
When you get ready for regifting, consider having a white elephant gift exchange for your next celebration. This removes all the embarrassment of being caught regifting because that’s the whole purpose of the event. In order to prevent hurting feelings, provide everyone with a guest list and ask them not to bring anything given by the people on that list.
1、Why does the author begin the passage with a question?
A.To share a hot phenomenon. B.To introduce the following part.
C.To ask for readers’ answers. D.To point out a common opinion.
2、What most contributes to the growing regifting?
A.People’s lack of money. B.People’s dislike of the gifts.
C.People’s reduced desire for gifts. D.People’s understanding of its manners.
3、What’s mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A.What to do before regifting.
B.How to make use of unwanted gifts.
C.What kind of gifts to be regifted.
D.Why regifting can cause embarrassment.
4、What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean?
A.Suitable but valueless.
B.Expensive and useful.
C.Packaged and invaluable.
D.Nice but unsuitable.
25.(10分) On Christmas Day, 2003, a woman named Nancy Sue Brown took her daughter and grandchildren to see a movie at an AMC theater. When the movie was over, the crowd made for the exits. A theater employee had just finished mopping the hallway and dutifully placed the “wet floor” sign in the slippery area. No one slipped due to the wet conditions, but someone did manage to knock over the sign. And by the time Ms. Brown got to the area, the sign was lying on the floor. And shortly thereafter, so was she. Her foot got caught in the sign, in a bad way, and she fell. Unfortunately Ms. Brown had undergone a back operation, and the fall caused more damage than it otherwise would have. So she and her husband sued (提起诉讼).
AMC argued that the entire point of the “wet floor” sign above was to warn of danger, and therefore, courts should encourage the use by not allowing Brown’s case to proceed(继续进行). AMC referred to a case about a December, 1998 incident, where a “wet floor” sign, not in use, fell to the floor causing another trip-and-fall. In that case, Georgia’s Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the store, but didn’t go so far as to say that “wet floor’ signs couldn’t give rise to legal liability (责任) in trip-and-fall accidents. In the Brown case, the Supreme Court therefore rejected AMC’s argument that the former case applied.
But the Browns argued something surprising that the “wet floor” sign was, itself, dangerous, because “using this type of sign in areas passed by lots of customers creates an unreasonable risk of foreseeable harm to the public in the form of tripping hazards(危险).” That’s right—the safety sign, used in the way it was designed, was itself dangerous. The court thankfully didn’t accept that argument, at least not entirely. But it did conclude that Brown’s case could continue to a jury(陪审团)— “a merchant’s selection and use of
