第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)The dangers of sitting all day are obvious. Researchers have shown that remaining sitting for extended periods of time (like at your 9-to-5 desk job) can do harm to your health. While exercise is a big part of reducing the harmful effects of sitting, it was unclear how many gym periods were needed to help – until now.
A new study, published in The Lancet, shows the ideal formula for reducing the negative effects of a sedentary(久坐的)job. Instead of a fixed number of hours spent exercising, the ratio(比率)depends on how much you sit: people who work a typical eight-hour day should spend at least one hour each day moving. If you sit six hours a day, you should spend half an hour exercising. The research also indicates that the exercise doesn’t have to be all once – or rigorous(严格的). It can be spread throughout the day and be as simple as walking.
The team behind the study analyzed data from a pool of a million adults over the age of 45 in Western Europe, the United States, and Australia. Using previous data, the researches examined data from 16 published studies and used it to determine how much exercise is required to compensate for sitting. Their recommended daily exercise goal is higher than previous advice but not necessarily less achievable, given it can be completed throughout the day.
Fitting in an hour of exercise a day sounds especially discouraging if you have a desk job, but there are plenty of workouts you can complete before and after work. Even if it means taking a 10-minute walk during lunch, your body will thank you in the long run.

22.(8分)The Truth Can Set You Free
I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.
“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him,and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license.
“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Are you with the army?”
“No, I’m not,” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to reregister yet.
“So what brings you here?”
He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “since you’ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.”
“So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.” He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat lie on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest.
‘‘Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors (肿瘤) are on the inside. ”And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.
He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor,” he said, “Slow down from now on.”
The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.

23.(8分)The East Room of the White House was bursting with color on July 14, as 56 young cooks arrived for the Kids’ Stale Dinner. The chefs, aged from 8 to 12, were winners of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, a program that encourages kids to create healthy, affordable, original, and tasty lunch recipes.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the event, now in its fifth year and part of her Let’s Move! More than 1,200 kids throughout America entered the challenge, were encouraged to be creative and use ingredients (原料) grown in their home states, or communities. Recipes had to represent each of the food groups by including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. The 56 winners were treated to a meal featuring some of their own creations.
“This event isn’t just about eating well today, but about setting kids like all of you up for a lifetime of healthy choices.” the former first lady told the young cooks. “As small you are, you can change lives. I see the work of kids, the magic you all do. People change because of kids.”
Amelie Chen’s winning recipe was Breadfruit, Taro, and Garlic Chicken Trio. The 9-year-old from American Samoa said she was “very excited” to be attending the event. “Winning this trip to the White House makes me think of my favorite quote from Walt Disney: ‘If you can dream it, you can do it,’” she said.

Michelle recognized them as driving forces in making the Kids’ State Dinner a reality several years ago. Ray and Steel posed for pictures with the young cooks.

24.(8分)The belief that new technologies are causing the death of work is the idea that never goes away. Despite evidence to the contrary, we still view technological change today as being more rapid and dramatic in its consequences for work than ever before. But this is nothing new. People have always viewed the technological changes that take place during their lives the most dramatic and dangerous that ever happened in history.
In the 1930s, the British economist(经济学家)John Maynard Keynes predicted the widespread use of electricity would produce a world where people spend most of their time doing nothing. In the United States during the 1960s, the government repeatedly investigates fears that automatic machines would permanently reduce the amount of work available, In 1988, one Australian historian claimed that at least a quarter of the workforce would be without jobs within 10 years because of computers.
Of course, none of these disasters came to pass in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, or anywhere else.
Yet today, we are seeing the return of these predictions, with some experts claiming the world of work once more undergoing radical and unprecedented change. They argue that robots and other workplace technologies are causing a reduction in the total amount of work available, or are bringing a more rapid pace substitution of machines for humans has been seen previously.
But there is a little evidence to support such beliefs, Statistics show that the percentage of people in work, the number of hours they work, and how frequently they change jobs have remained remarkably constant over the past 20 years.
This stability should not come as a surprise, There are good reasons why we should not expect new technologies to cause the death of work. New technologies always cause job losses, but that is only part of the story. What also needs to be understood is how they increase the amount of work available.
One way this happens is through the increases in incomes that accompany the use of new technologies. With the introduction of these technologies, good and services can be produced faster, which results in higher real incomes for workers. Higher incomes then increase demand for other products and consequently more workers are needed to make them. Additionally, while new technologies are likely to substitute for some types of workers, they will also increase demand for other types of workers, especially those with higher level skills and expertise.
So, the end of work is no closer today than at any time in the past. But there is still a need to keep disproving the prediction, to reduce people’s fears.

C.Stable D.Variable

A.Productivity improvements help raise workers’ salaries.
B.There is more demand for new skills in the economy.
C.There are more goods for people to choose from.
D.Higher quality goods at lower prices encourage consumption.
4、What is the author's opinion about the introduction of new technology?
A.It does not have an effect on most people’s jobs.
B.Its danger to peoples employment possibilities is overstated.
C.It usually leads to a significant increase in employment.
D.Its benefits are usually not worth the introduction.
